Need advice on switching from mainframe developer to cloud!!

• Upvotes

Hey everyone, I’m an Aeronautical Engineering graduate currently working at TCS as a mainframe developer for a year

I got placed through campus recruitment, and since I didn’t have a computer science background, getting into IT was a completely new experience for me.in TCS training I got to learn linux and networking thought cisco lacket tracer and I’m currently working with technologies like COBOL, JCL and DB2, but honestly, I’m still struggling to build a strong technical foundation.

Recently, I’ve been thinking about switching to cloud computing, possibly AWS or Azure, and eventually moving into DevOps.

I’m confused about where to start and whether switching from mainframe to cloud is a good move for someone with my background.

Should I continue learning mainframe or start preparing for cloud alongside my job? Is AWS a good starting point, and how difficult would it be to switch to a cloud role as a non-CS graduate?

Would love to hear from people who have made a similar transition or have experience in this field. Any genuine advice would be appreciated!

which GPU provider should i choose?

i'm running an embedding service for images and texts. i can run it with enough throughput on AWS g6.xlarge which uses L4 GPU

what reliable and not too expensive options do i got? AWS is too expensive and yes i know about the saving plans

other alternatives i considered were Runpod and Hetzner, any more providers that i don't know of?

serverless is not an option due to cold starts

Vibe coding made building fast. Has enterprise approval become the bottleneck?

Disclosure: I'm a co-founder of DronaHQ, and this is a problem we're working on.

A pattern our customers keep describing: getting a working app together is increasingly easy. Getting it approved to run inside the enterprise is not.

The project then waits for code review, compute access, and governance checks. The prototype is ready, but the path to production isn't.

We're tackling this with what we call a "pre-auth box" — the TSA PreCheck analogy fits. A defined, pre-authorized path: SSO, role-based access, audit logs and governed compute agreed before the code exists. A faster lane, not a free pass — the checks still happen, they're just not discovered app-by-app.

For teams dealing with this: where does the queue actually form for you — reviewing generated code, getting infrastructure, or satisfying governance? What have you standardized successfully, and what still needs app-by-app review?

Would you use a specialized GPU cloud for AI workloads or stick with AWS/GCP?

I have been thinking about how the way we choose infrastructure changes once a project moves beyond regular web apps and starts working with AI as for a normal web app picking between AWS, GCP and Azure usually depends on things like the ecosystem, cost, how you deploy things and how you run them day to day but when it comes to AI workloads that need a lot of GPU power, the decision becomes more complex.

You have to think about how many GPUs are available, how fast you can get them set up, how much they are used, how the network works, how you manage containers and how easy it is to increase or decrease computing power as needed. Companies like Yotta Lab, CoreWeave and Lambda specialize in GPU based infrastructure.

From a DevOps standpoint having strong GPUs is just one part of the challenge. You also need to think about how to connect them with Kubernetes, how to track their usage, how to handle work queues and how to prevent unused compute resources from sitting idle. For those who have deployed AI workloads that require a lot of GPU power would you go with a specialized GPU cloud or a major cloud provider like AWS or GCP?

Resume for eventually getting into a cloud security/ cloud engineering role

Hey guys,

I graduate soon and I am hoping to work in cloud engineering and or cloud security roles in the future. I know that is unrealistic out of school, I am hoping to work in a security role or even IAM role if possible. What would be the best path to go down to land a role that gets me closer to cloud sec? Certs? Projects?

Any advice is appreciated.

Snowflake Cloud Support Engineer (Application Security) Interview — Need Advice on Hiring Process and Preparation

Hey everyone!

I have an upcoming interview with Snowflake for the Cloud Support Engineer – Application Security . My initial interview is scheduled with the Hiring Manager.

I'm trying to understand the interview process and prepare in the right direction.

For anyone who has interviewed with Snowflake for a Cloud Support Engineer, Application Security, or a similar support/security role, I'd really appreciate your insights.

  1. How many interview rounds were there in your experience?
  2. What topics should I focus on for the technical rounds?
  3. Do they ask questions on IAM, SSO, SAML, OAuth 2.0, SCIM, MFA, and database authentication?
  4. How much emphasis is placed on troubleshooting scenarios, incident management, and Root Cause Analysis (RCA)?
  5. Should I expect questions on Snowflake architecture, SQL, AWS, Linux, networking, and security?
  6. What should I expect during the initial Hiring Manager screening?

I've already started preparing authentication and authorization protocols, IAM concepts, Snowflake fundamentals, and troubleshooting scenarios. I want to make sure I'm focusing on the right areas rather than studying everything randomly.

If you've recently interviewed for a similar role, could you please share your experience and any preparation tips? Even a general idea of the interview structure would be extremely helpful.

Thanks in advance! I really appreciate any guidance

The “Amazon rented out its spare Christmas servers” story is a myth. Here’s how AWS actually started, and why Wall Street hated it

Full disclosure: I made this video. I run a small channel of animated explainers about the business side of tech, and this one is a 5-minute history of AWS.

I hope it’s OK to share here. Mods, please remove it if not.

A few things that surprised me while researching it (all from primary sources: Amazon’s 10-Ks, the original 2006 BusinessWeek story, and Jassy’s and Bezos’s own accounts):

  • The people who built AWS say the spare-capacity story is a myth. It started because Amazon’s own engineers kept rebuilding the same storage, servers and databases.
  • EC2 was built in Cape Town because the engineer leading it wanted to go home.
  • As Amazon now counts it, AWS made $458M of operating profit in 2014. All of Amazon made $178M.

Video (5:25): https://youtu.be/u3QmplqlGRs

Would really appreciate your thoughts on it. This sub knows the subject far better than most, so honest feedback is very welcome. Thanks all.

PROJECT:- compression of files for cloud storage

I'm doing a project on cloud storage management, and I'm exploring an idea to reduce the amount of space files use without changing their contents.

The idea is to store uploads using fast compression first, then let the system recompress them in the background using a higher compression level when it can save a worthwhile amount of space in cloud . i am using aws s3 for storage . Since this runs on cloud storage, it would need to limit CPU usage and avoid slowing down regular uploads and downloads.

what more features can i add to this project? maybe like bluetooth transfer or smth else . im confused , i could use your help .

cloud billing for b2b

Would you have 2 minutes to answer a few questions?

  1. Roughly how much do you spend on the cloud per month?

  2. Who is responsible for monitoring this bill?

  3. When was the last time the bill came as a surprise? What did you do?

  4. Have you ever tried using a tool to reduce these costs?
