Any tips for someone sleeping rough?

1.0k Upvotes

See title.

Been sleeping rough for almost a week now and it’s getting tougher to find safe places to get a few hours Kip.

I’ve no resources, no friends or family to stay with and theres no emergency hostel beds due to lack of availability.

Any advice is welcomed and appreciated.

In Newcastle.

EDIT: can I just say? You lot are the absolute best. I was feeling fucking hopeless and ashamed I can’t take care of myself like I’d like to be able to but the DMs, offers and advice I’ve been given by people who don’t know me from Adam is making me cry in the club rn. Jk they won’t let me in club bc my bag is too big

People have been so generous tonight that it doesn’t even feel real. I made a post out of desperation and the kindness and support people have shown a stranger has given me the strength and hope to pay this all forward to someone in my position when I’m able. I love you all and thank you so much for your generosity.

Had to have our dog put down today

1.3k Upvotes

He was 14 and a really good dog. My youngest has never known a time without him and we're all devastated. Took him to the vets this morning expecting to get antibiotics or some anti-inflammatories, and ended up having to have him put down this afternoon.

Not expecting any comments or any replies, just needed to put it out there to the universe, because it's so, so quiet in the house and it doesn't feel real.

Edit: I didn't expect anything after posting this. I just needed to tell someone how I'm feeling as I'm trying to put on a brave face for the family. Thank you fellow Redditors, I really appreciate your support after a devastating day

Edit 2: I intend on reading and responding to every comment because you've all been so kind, but I am exhausted and just want this day to end, so I'll pick this up again in the morning. Again, thank you all of you kind internet strangers.

Quick review of English cuisine

• Upvotes

Just finished a quick long weekend in England and wanted to share my impressions. By way of background, I got my masters in England 20 years ago, and have visited a few times since, though it had been five years or so. The country holds a special place in my heart and personal history. This particular trip took me to an old friend who lives in Oxfordshire.

I made the mistake of trying to fill every day with food and drink that I can’t get at home in the US. On a short visit, this meant a diet exclusively consisting of full English breakfasts, sausage rolls, savory pies, curry, and multiple pints of bitter. I did not encounter any fish and chips or kebabs, and that is probably for the best.

I was impressed that M&S had Christmas stuff in large supply. I was glad to be able to buy some mince pies, which I ate with joy along with some Cadbury’s chocolates.

I observed more coffee drinking than I recalled seeing in my student days. The abundance of coffee, uh, really got the pipes moving after nightly over-indulgence. I’d say 75% of my hydration strategy involved coffee, tea, and beer. I did buy some small batch gin to take home, however.

While there is nice fruit and veg to be found in England, I didn’t have any of it unless it was in a pie.

Overall rating: 10/10

Gastrointestinal Distress: 4/10

Lovely being there! Hope to see you soon.

The inaugural toastie was mature cheddar. Forgot to put the jalapeños in to sandwich itself so had them on the side.

It was absolutely delicious. Friends warn me that after two months of excessive toastie consumption it will go in a cupboard never to come out again, so please hit me up with your favourite toastie recipes and creations to keep the love alive.

Do you a job where your users don't want what you create?

My first thought is workplace training videos. Compulsory box ticking stuff that not one person who uses these things wants. Should you A) Punch Steve in the face B) Smear his seat with Peanut Butter c) Raise your concerns with your HR Department?

How does it feel to be making a product that users do not value?

This wallet I found in the loft is the only evidence it existed, I can't find anything online! I vaguely remember signing up in school when I was in year 2 (96 - 97), and my wife who went to the same school vaguely remembers it as well.

Evening Salesmen

• Upvotes

I've had a few salesmen knock at around 7-8pm recently. One asking about supplying me with gas, a few asking about if I need a milkman. I don't know what's going on, it's only started in the last week or so. Have milkman got so aggressive with their marketing?

6 weeks ago I found a caterpillar in the garden and it emerged as a moth today.

Hummingbird Hawk moth. I put the caterpillar in a tub with some soil and it buried itself to pupate. Luckily it picked a sunny day with a northerly wind to emerge as it will probably migrate south into Europe for the winter.

Neighbour Dispute

1.2k Upvotes

Our new neighbours were doing some DIY at 2-3am last night. I was instructed to "at least ask about it". And so I did my duty.

Spoke with them on the doorstep for about twenty minutes. They were very nice and had a very reasonable explanation, and a promise it wouldn't happen again.

We found some common ground and agreed to have coffee and chat some time over the next week.

I'm unclear on next steps. Do I poo in the cafetière or what?

This morning, I feel very British. Watching rugby on a muddy pitch in the rain, with a pork pie and cup of tea.

Staying at my mums for the weekend and this morning she noticed a Robin at the end of the garden and was concerned that it hadn’t moved for a while.

Grabbed the binoculars to have a look only to notice it was dog shit.

Sorry for picture. Only one I could find showing the front. It’s a dog with a puppy on its back, long sleeve, a grey/white colour. Forgive Nannies hand.

Edit: Thank you everyone. I have the link. It’s not on sale but coming soon. I will be checking H&M website everyday. Enjoy your Sunday afternoon.

Edit 2: thanks again everyone. I’ve taken a punt on a 1 star Vinted seller. Fingers crossed.
