RESOURCE Carnatic Commune, our new Discord server, is up and active. Come sing with us!
Here's a place for Rasikas - lovers of Carnatic music - to explore, learn, and celebrate this tradition together, as requested by the community. We've been building the server slowly over the past couple of months with collaborators who responded to this post:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Carnatic/comments/1m4rm24/requesting_collaborators_for_a_discord_server/
The server remained invite-only during this period, so that we could thoughtfully manage building the space to accommodate larger numbers of people, and consider structures and events ahead of time. Our collaborators have done remarkable work in achieving that foundation alone, while also creating a space that already brims with enthusiasm for this art.
The server is now ready for the larger Carnatic community, and open to all.
Join us at: https://discord.gg/2qpqvbvgvr
All you need to join is real curiosity and appreciation for Carnatic music. Whether you're a lifelong student, a casual listener, or somewhere in between, you are welcome.
See you on there!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rasikas who are new to Discord, and/or having trouble with the invite or verification - do reach out to u/AlcorSpins or u/Flaky-Cheek-5571 via comment or DM; we'll get you through.

DISCUSSION Do Carnatic violinists use viola instead of violin?
I've noticed the instrument many Carnatic violinists play appears too large to be a violin. Does anyone know if they're actually using violas?

MISC Looking for an online Carnatic vocal teacher
Hi, looking to learn Carnatic vocals. I'm a total beginner.
Also, I won't be able to afford expensive classes. I've reached out to many teachers on Instagram and all of them are charging INR 3000-5000 per month.

DISCUSSION Name your instrument
Hey guyss. Do you name your instruments ?
Personally I do like to have a name for mine. I was thinking to put some nice feminine name for my violin.
What is the name of your instruments ? If you don't have one already, what would you wanna name it ?
I was thinking of these:
- vaaditra= musical instrument;
- anurati = love;
- abhirami = one who is attractive in each and every moment of time
Do you guys have any suggestions?

DISCUSSION Best way to learn the Veena
Hello everyone!
My friend and I are 30 F, with several years of Carnatic vocal training until our teen years.
What is the best way to start learning the veena in a serious manner, from scratch?
What is the best way to go about it in Chennai and Bengaluru?
Do teachers offer certifications? Are there any exams? How many hours in person per week is recommended apart from a 9-5? Is it better to join an institution?
Please share anything that you know. Thank you!

Self-Advertisement 🌸 A question for Bharatanatyam lovers 🌸
Namaste everyone! 🙏
One thing I've often thought about is how people who love Bharatanatyam manage to continue learning when they don't have access to a teacher nearby or have to take a break for personal reasons.
Sometimes, even when the interest is still there, finding the time and the right guidance can be difficult.
As someone who has spent many years learning, practising, and teaching Bharatanatyam, I'd love to hear your experiences.
For those who are learning Bharatanatyam, or have always wanted to learn, what do you find most challenging? Is it finding a teacher, maintaining a regular practice, or getting the opportunity to learn from wherever you live?
I've also been exploring ways to make learning Bharatanatyam more accessible through individual online sessions, and I'd be interested to hear what people think about learning this way. 🌼

MISC A Carnatic discord server for vocalists and instrumentalists. Interested people, welcome to join!
Hello, guys! I am a classical vocalist. The main purpose of this server is to sing and play instruments on the server's VC and share feedback, thereby gaining more knowledge of and a better grip on our singing/playing technique.
People joining this server MUST contribute either vocally or by playing instruments. Music sessions will be held on weekends and at other times when the majority of the people on the server are willing to attend. Joining the server, sharing music video links, or engaging in conversations about music or musicians will not be enough. Members' activity will be noted, and inactive people who join just to listen or chat will be removed.
I wanted to enforce this particular rule because, in the servers I have seen and been in before, people just talk and talk about music, but no one actually sings. That's why I wanted to create a different server where people are actually vocal, rather than one built around chat or listening sessions. This doesn't mean the server won't have any listening sessions or channels for people to chat about and discuss music; it's just that listening to music videos together won't be our top priority or our most frequent activity.
I’ve just created the server a moment ago, here is the server link: https://discord.gg/9H67pVBUf
Here’s to having a good time sharing our knowledge through singing and playing!
