The first thing Leo noticed was the warmth.
Not the good kind of warmth — not the heavy-blanket, deep-sleep, cocooned-at-the-centre-of-the-mattress kind of warmth. This was wrong. It was wet warmth, and it was spreading.
He surfaced slowly out of a dream he couldn't quite hold onto, something about a swimming pool, something about the water rising past his waist and nobody caring. For a few floaty seconds the dream and the bed bled together and he thought, fine, it's the pool, it's fine, and then the smell hit him.
Piss. Sharp, familiar, unmistakable. His piss.
Leo opened his eyes. The ceiling of his bedroom looked back at him, pale grey in the pre-dawn light, and the little clock on his nightstand glowed 4:47. He lay perfectly still for a moment, the way you do when you're hoping a thing isn't true, and then he slid one hand down under the duvet, past his stomach, and pressed his palm flat against the front of his boxers.
Soaked. Not damp. Soaked — heavy and cold at the front, clinging to him, and when he shifted his hips the whole sheet made a soft, sucking little noise against the mattress.
"Shit," he whispered to the empty room.
He was Eightteen years old. Eightteen. He had not wet the bed since he was, what, eight? Maybe nine. And yet here he was at ten to five in the morning, lying in a puddle of his own making like a toddler, while the house slept.
He sat up, and the wet boxers peeled off his skin with a wet schlick that sounded obscene in the quiet. The sheet came with them, sticking to his thigh for a second before letting go. He swung his legs over the edge of the bed and looked back at the damage.
It was bad. A dark, roughly circular stain spread across the middle of the fitted sheet — not a little ring, a proper flood, the kind that says the person who made it had been holding a lot and had let go of all of it at once. It had reached the pillow on the far side. It had soaked through to the mattress protector, he could see the slight sheen where the sheet had lifted.
And it stank. That warm, ammonia-sweet smell that pee gets when it's been sitting in fabric for a few hours. It filled the little room. It was going to be in the mattress, in the duvet, in the air.
He ran his hand through his hair. Blond, messy, sticking up. He was 165 centimetres, and he'd been growing into his frame lately — the shoulders had started to square out, the chest had filled, he could do twenty push-ups now without dying, and there was a hard little ridge of muscle across his stomach that he checked in the mirror more often than he'd ever admit. He was proud of it. He was not proud of this.
He pulled the boxers away from his skin and looked down at himself. His cock hung soft and pale between his thighs, still glistening at the tip, and — as always — the length of it made him feel vaguely apologetic. Eightteen years old and it was already a good thirteen to fourteen centimetres soft, thick at the base, with a heavy pair of balls that pulled his boxers down at the front. His sister had once, at a beach, squinted at him and said you're built like a donkey, and he'd never been sure whether it was a compliment or a diagnosis.
Right now it looked like a limp, defeated little hose. Which, he supposed, was accurate.
He stood. A trickle ran down the inside of his thigh. He made a face and padded out into the hallway, the wet boxers slapping quietly against his legs, the smell following him like a dog.
The house was dark and cold. It was the beginning of the summer holidays, and the heating had been off all night; the carpet was cold under his bare feet. Somewhere down the hall his sister's door was shut. Their mother's door was open a crack, and a thin slice of warm lamp-light lay across the floorboards.
He hesitated. He could just deal with it himself. Strip the bed, shove the sheets in the machine, sleep on a towel, and never tell anybody. That was the plan. That was a good plan. That was a man's plan.
Then he imagined Ruby finding out — Ruby, eightteen, red-haired, sharp-tongued, who never let him forget anything, ever — and the plan dissolved. If he told Mum, and Mum was on his side, he had cover. He knocked.
"Mum?"
A rustle. A soft groan. "Mmh?"
"Mum. Wake up. I— something happened."
The lamp on her nightstand clicked brighter, and his mother sat up against the headboard, and even in the middle of a small crisis Leo's eyes did the thing they always did around his mother, which was to note the sheer amount of her.
Claire was thirty-eight, and she was a hundred and eighty centimetres of woman — nearly a head taller than her son — with a soft, generous, comfortable body that she'd long ago stopped apologising for. She slept in a thin grey t-shirt that was at least two sizes too big everywhere except the chest, and in the chest it was fighting a losing war. Her breasts were huge — full, heavy, the kind that dragged the neckline down into a deep soft V and shifted with their own weight whenever she moved. Brunette hair, loose and sleep-tangled, fell over one shoulder. Slightly chubby at the hips and the belly, the way a mother in her late thirties tends to be, all curves and warmth.
She looked at him, then looked at his wet boxers, then looked back up at his face, and something happened in her expression — a little brightening, a small flicker of interest that Leo was too sleepy to read but that he would, much later, come to understand very well.
"Ah," she said. "You had an accident."
"I wet the bed," he said, and the word 'bed' came out a bit strangled. "Like a baby."
"You drank about a litre of lemonade at dinner," she said, entirely reasonably, throwing the duvet back. "And then two glasses of water while we watched the film. I'm surprised you didn't float away."
He groaned. "Can you not tell Ruby?"
"Can I not tell Ruby what?" she said, standing up. She was wearing pyjama shorts, and standing she was so much taller than him that he had to tilt his head back a little. "That her brother had a little accident at eightteen? That he came to his mummy's room to get help?"
"Mum."
"Come on," she said, and there it was again, that little private smile. "Let's get the sheets off before they set."
──────────────────────────────
They worked together in the grey dark of his room, stripping the bed. Leo pulled the fitted sheet off the corners while his mother peeled the mattress protector back; the smell bloomed again as the fabric came up, and he saw her tip her head and actually inhale, like she was checking a wine.
"It's not that bad," she said.
"It's piss, Mum."
"It's a morning accident," she said, and folded the sheet into a neat square as if the thing were radioactive. "It happens. The mattress protector's done its job — the mattress is dry underneath, look. Good. Take that down to the utility room, put it in the machine on a hot wash with the powder in the white tub. The blue tub's the fabric softener, don't mix them up."
He took the wet bundle down to the utility room off the kitchen. The lino was cold. The washing machine was old and grumbled when he opened it. He shoved the sheets and the protector in, added a scoop of powder, twisted the dial to 60 and pressed start, and the machine rumbled into life like something waking up.
When he came back, his mother had already remade the bed — fresh sheet, fresh duvet cover, no fuss at all, quick and practised like she'd done this a thousand times. Which, he supposed, she had. Just not for him, not for years.
"There," she said. "Sorted. And the smell'll be gone by the time we're back from the summer house. Now." She checked the clock. Five past five. "Since we're both up and the trip's twelve hours, let's eat early and get on the road before the traffic. Ruby can sleep in the car."
──────────────────────────────
Breakfast, at 05:20 in the morning, was a proper one.
His mother cooked like she was feeding a small army: scrambled eggs glossy and soft with chives, a whole tray of bacon curling and spitting in the pan, toast stacked in a silver rack, a jug of orange juice sweating on the counter. She slid a plate in front of him that was roughly the size of a hubcap and sat down opposite with her own.
"Eat," she said. "Long drive."
Leo ate. He ate a lot — he always did, lately, the way teenage boys do, like their bodies are a furnace and the food is the coal. And because he was thirsty, and because there was a jug of juice right there and a carton of milk beside it, and because he was thinking about the road trip and not at all about his bladder, he drank. Two full glasses of orange juice. Then a glass of milk, because the eggs were salty.
His mother watched him do it, and smiled at nothing, and drank a cup of black coffee.
At 06:30, Ruby appeared in the kitchen doorway, barefoot, in a cropped pink tank top and boxer shorts, her hair — that dyed, defiant, copper-red mop — a bird's nest on one side of her head. She was eightteen, a hundred and sixty centimetres, built soft and round the way their mother was, with big breasts for her frame that she'd been dressing to hide for a year and had recently, after a growth spurt and a change of heart, begun dressing to show. Slightly chubby at the hips and the thighs, freckles dusted across her nose. She yawned, scratched her stomach, and squinted at the table.
"Why's everyone up?" she said. "Is it, like, the middle of the night?"
"It's half six," said their mother. "We're leaving early. Get dressed, love, we'll be in the car most of the day."
"Mmf." Ruby wandered to the fridge, drank orange juice straight from the bottle in a way that had driven Leo insane since he was ten, and paused, bottle at her lips, to look at him.
"What's up with you?" she said.
"Nothing."
"You look like you lost a fight."
He could feel his mother's eyes on him. He said nothing. Ruby shrugged, drank, and went to get dressed.
──────────────────────────────
They left at seven.
The car was a big grey estate — long enough to swallow two suitcases, three duffel bags, a cooler, a crate of food their mother insisted on bringing "in case the shops by the house are shut," and a stack of pillows and blankets for the drive. Their mother loaded it with an ease that came from doing it every summer; Leo helped with the heavy things, and Ruby sat in the back seat with her earbuds in and her feet up, contributing nothing.
The summer house was the family's thing. It had been their grandmother's, a little white timber cottage on a bluff above the sea, six hundred kilometres and twelve hours south of home, and every July their mother took them there and every August brought them back, and the twelve hours in between were always, always the same: long, boring, and the closest the three of them got to actually being stuck with each other.
The engine turned on. Their mother adjusted the mirror, clicked her seatbelt, and pulled out onto the empty street.
"Right," she said. "Twelve hours. Entertainment is your own problem. There's a bag of snacks by Ruby's feet and a cold box of drinks in the back, help yourself, but don't fight."
Nobody fought. For the first hour it was even nice — the city thinning out into suburbs, then fields, then the long grey ribbon of the motorway with the sun coming up sideways and low across the tarmac. Leo watched it out of the window. Ruby fell asleep almost immediately with her cheek against the glass, her earbuds in, her mouth slightly open.
And Leo drank.
He didn't mean to. It was just that the drinks box was right there, and the sun was warm through the glass, and the road was hypnotic, and there was a can of iced tea and a bottle of water and then another bottle of water, and by the time they were an hour out he'd put back roughly a litre and a half of fluid.
At 8:05 — one hour and five minutes into a twelve-hour drive — Leo shifted in his seat, and noticed.
The iced tea and the water and the milk and the juice had, apparently, held a meeting. There was a pressure low in his belly, a dull, insistent fullness like a hand pressing gently from the inside, and it said, clearly: we need to go.
He waited. He thought maybe it would settle. It did not settle; it grew. Ten minutes later it had gone from a suggestion to a statement, and Leo leaned forward between the seats.
"Mum?"
"Mm?"
"Can we stop somewhere? I need the toilet."
His mother glanced at him in the mirror, then at the road ahead, then at the little green sign that slid past and shrank away behind them.
"Ah," she said. "See that sign?"
"Yeah?"
"That was the last services for a while. The next one's about three hours."
Leo blinked. "Three hours?"
"We're on the long stretch now, love. Nothing but fields until the border." She clicked her tongue. "Can you hold it?"
"Three hours," he said again, as if repeating it would make it shorter.
"You're eightteen. You can hold it three hours."
He looked at Ruby, asleep and useless, then at the back of his mother's head, then out at the enormous, empty, featureless countryside rolling past, and he sat back and said, with all the confidence of a boy who had never once in his life correctly estimated his own bladder:
"Yeah. Fine. Easy."
──────────────────────────────
It was not easy.
By nine o'clock the pressure had thickened. It wasn't pain yet — it was a low, warm, rounded weight sitting behind his belt, like he'd swallowed a full balloon, and every bump in the road made it slosh. He tried to find a comfortable position. Legs crossed at the ankles helped, for a while. Then crossing them made it worse, so he uncrossed them and pressed his knees together. Then that made it worse, so he sat forward with his elbows on his knees, which felt better for about four minutes.
By nine-thirty it had started to actually hurt.
Not agony — not yet — but a real, insistent ache, a throb that timed itself to the passing of the white lines. The low sun was on his side of the car now, hot through the glass, and his mother had the heating on because Ruby was cold in the back, and every degree of it seemed to squeeze another drop into Leo's bladder. He put a hand on his stomach. Under his shirt, low down, there was a firm, taut little dome; he could press it and feel the answer of the pressure inside, a sharp echo that said careful, careful.
"How you doing?" his mother asked, without looking round.
"Fine," he said, in the voice of a man being quietly tortured.
Ruby woke up around ten, yawned, stretched, and immediately, out of pure instinct, found something to poke.
"Why's he sitting like that?" she said.
"He needs a wee," said their mother. "And the next services are still a while away."
Ruby's whole face lit up. "Ohhh," she said. "Ohhh. You're doing the little dance."
"I'm not doing a dance."
"You're doing the dance," she said. "You're doing the little legs-together wriggle. You look like you're about to be sick."
"I'm fine."
"You're gonna wet yourself," she said, and settled back with her earbuds, smug as a cat.
The words landed harder than they should have.
Because — and Leo would only admit this to himself, sideways, at the very back of his mind — there was a reason they landed. There was a reason a small warm thrill went down his spine when Ruby said you're gonna wet yourself and then put her earbuds back in and forgot all about it.
Don't be stupid, he told himself. You're eightten. You had one accident. It doesn't mean anything.
10:40. 10:50. The pressure built and built and built. It had stopped being a balloon and started being a wall, a hard rounded wall behind his pubic bone, and the ache had spread down into his groin and up into his lower back. He was squeezing his thighs together now, properly, and pressing his heel into the floor, and every so often his whole lower half would give a little involuntary twitch.
"Twenty minutes," his mother said, and there was something in her voice — calm, unhurried, a bit amused. "Fifteen, even. Hang on."
"I'm hanging on," Leo said through his teeth.
The next fifteen minutes were the longest of his life.
At the ten-minutes-out mark the ache became sharp. He could feel it at the very tip of him now, that hot urgent pinch, and every bump was a small emergency. His legs were clamped shut so tight his knees ached too. He had one hand braced against the door and the other pressed flat against his crotch through his jeans, which he'd told himself was a baby move and which he was now, quietly, revising his opinion of.
Eight minutes. He could see the services sign now, the little blue rectangle with the cup and the fork and the Toilets symbol, and it was so close, so close—
"Mum," he said, strangled.
"Hm?"
"Mum."
She looked in the mirror and saw his face , she actually laughed, gently. "Oh, love."
"I can't—"
"Three minutes, you can—"
"I can't—"
And then his body, which had been holding on for two and a half hours out of pure stubbornness, simply decided.
It was a small surrender at first. A hot little leak that he felt bloom against the head of him, and he clenched hard to stop it, and it stopped, and he breathed. But the leak had told the rest of him what was possible, and the wall behind his pubic bone buckled, and he felt it — felt the actual give — and then he let go.
The stream that came out of him was steady and long.
He felt it start at the tip, hot, almost scalding against his skin, and spread. It soaked the front of his boxers in a single hot breath, and then it kept coming, and the boxers couldn't hold it, and it ran down and soaked the crotch of his jeans, and then it kept coming, and he felt it pool under his arse in the seat, hot and spreading, and then — and this was the part he would remember — it kept coming, still, for seconds, a steady heavy stream with no end, and his whole lower body went warm and heavy and limp with the relief of it.
He heard himself make a small noise. Ruby pulled out one earbud. Their mother said, "Ohhhh, there he goes."
The smell came a moment later — hot, sharp, fresh. Piss, in a car, with the heating on.
Leo sat in it. The seat under him was wet. His thighs were wet. His crotch was a hot swamp. He felt the wetness reach the backs of his knees. He'd emptied everything, all of it, the whole litre and a half, into his jeans, in a car, three minutes from a toilet, at eightteen years old.
"Oh my god," said Ruby, delighted. "You actually did it. You actually wet yourself."
"I did not—" he began, and then gave up, because the evidence was currently soaking into the car seat.
"You're soaked," she said, leaning forward to peer at him. "Look at your legs. Look, there's, like, a puddle under you. Mum, look, he made a puddle."
"I can see, Rubes."
Leo put his face in his hands. His ears were burning. Under the humiliation, though — and this was the part he filed away, sideways, for later — there was a strange, warm, floaty little feeling that had nothing to do with the relief of his bladder. He pressed his thighs together against the wet denim, the wet denim pressed back, and something in his chest did a small, private flip.
──────────────────────────────
They pulled into the services four minutes later.
His mother parked in the far corner of the lot, away from everyone, and turned the engine off, and turned in her seat to look at him properly for the first time.
"Oh, love," she said, and it wasn't unkind. It was, if anything, the opposite. "You really did let it all go."
"I held it for two hours."
"You did. You did brilliantly. It's not your fault the country's empty." She reached back and squeezed his knee. Her hand was warm. "Right. Here's what's going to happen. You go into the toilets, into the disabled one at the end, and you wait in there for me. Don't sit down. Don't touch anything. Just stand and wait."
"You're not coming?"
"I'm going to run into the shop first. Two minutes." She was already out of the car, and there was a briskness to her that Leo, in his wet misery, didn't notice the meaning of. "Go on. Go. Wait for me."
He went. He crossed the little forecourt to the services building with his jacket held low and loose over the front of his jeans, hoping nobody would look at his legs, and he felt the wet denim chafe and cling with every step and he wanted, desperately, for the earth to open. A lorry driver glanced at him. A woman with a toddler glanced at him. He was sure they could smell him. He was sure they could see.
The disabled toilet at the end was big and cold and tiled, it smelled of industrial lemon. He stood in the middle of it and waited, hands in his pockets, the wet fabric cooling against his skin and going from hot-wet to cold-wet, which was worse.
The door opened. His mother came in and closed it behind her and slid the bolt.
She was carrying a bag.
"Right," she said. "Off."
"Off what?"
"Everything. Jeans, boxers. Off, and in the bin."
She pointed at the pedal bin in the corner, and Leo looked down at his soaked jeans, and then at her, and then at the bag, and then back at her.
"What am I gonna wear?"
"Don't worry about it," she said, and set the bag down on the little plastic changing shelf beside the sink, and started pulling things out of it. "I bought something."
She turned, and looked at him, and waited, and Leo understood that she was going to stand there while he did it. Which was fine. She was his mother. She'd seen him a thousand times.
He undid his belt — the leather was wet and stiff — and unbuttoned the jeans and peeled them down his legs. They came off with a wet shluck, heavy and dark at the crotch, and he folded them and looked at them for a second, and then dropped them in the bin.
Then the boxers. They came down with a wet, clinging drag against his thighs, and he stepped out of them and dropped them in on top of the jeans, and now he was standing in the middle of a services toilet in just his t-shirt and his socks, his cock hanging soft between his legs, the smell of his own pee rising off the bin beside him.
"Good," his mother said. "Now — up."
"Up where?"
But she didn't answer, she just came at him, and before Leo could object she'd bent and scooped him up under the arms and lifted him off his feet — eightteen years old, 165cm, and his mother simply picked him up like he was six — and set him down sitting on the wide plastic changing shelf beside the sink.
He looked down. The shelf was at hip height for her, which meant his feet dangled a good twenty centimetres off the floor. He was sitting on a baby changing table. His mother's face was level with his chest.
"Mum—"
"Lie down."
"Why?"
"Just lie down."
He layed down. The plastic was cold through his shirt. From flat on his back, the ceiling tiles wheeled past above him and his mother loomed over him sideways, upside-down, and the whole thing suddenly felt very strange and very small and very, very good.
He heard her open the bag. He heard a crinkle — a soft, cottony, plastic-y crinkle, the sound of something he couldn't quite name — and then another, softer sound, like a packet being torn.
"What's that?"
"Just be patient."
Then something cold and wet slid across him.
He jumped. It slid across his groin, cool and damp, wiping down the crease of his thigh and over the soft skin behind his balls, and then it lifted and slid back up again, and he felt a wet cloth run over the base of his cock and down his shaft and around the head, and his toes curled and he made a small noise.
"What is that?"
"Wet wipes," his mother said, matter-of-fact. "You're covered in dried wee, love. Don't want you getting a rash."
She wiped him everywhere — the backs of his thighs, the crease of his ass, the little dip at the base of his spine, the whole warm tender run of his groin. She was thorough, and unhurried, and her hand was cool from the wipe, and by the time she was done Leo's skin was clean and tingling and his heart was doing something slightly faster than normal.
"Bottom up."
He lifted his hips without thinking, and his mother slid something under him.
It was soft. Soft and thick and big — a wide, padded, cottony thing that slid under his bare ass and came up between his legs, and when he settled back down onto it the padding gave under him, squashed, and held him. He heard the crinkle again, right under his hips. It felt like lying on a soft thick towel, except it wasn't a towel, it was shaped, it was rounded, it had a big puffy panel that came up between his thighs and it was soft as anything he'd ever felt against his skin.
"That's—" he said. "Is that—"
"Spread your legs."
He spread his legs. His mother lifted a small white tub, unscrewed the lid, and shook a soft white powder out into her palm.
Then she started smearing it on him.
Cool, dry, silky powder, rubbed into the creases of his groin and over the whole of his bottom, and it tickled and soothed at the same time, and she was thorough with this too — so thorough. She made sure to get everywhere, the way she said it, everywhere, the crooks of his thighs, the crease of his ass, the whole underside of him, and then she scooped a little more powder into her palm and did the last part.
She wrapped her powder-dry hand around his cock and worked it in.
And Leo got hard.
He didn't mean to. He wasn't thinking about anything in particular. But a cool dry hand had just wrapped itself around him and started sliding the powder down his shaft, and his body simply made its own decision, and he felt himself swell and lift and stiffen in his mother's hand, growing out of her grip, and he heard her make a small soft huh of surprise.
"Oh," she said. "Hello."
"Sorry," he said, automatically, because it seemed like the thing to say.
"Don't be sorry," she said, and finished the powder, and let go. "Right. All done. Sit up— no, wait, lie still."
She took something out of the bag and unfolded it beside his hip, and this was the thing he'd been hearing. It was big and white and soft-topped, with two little tape-wings sticking out at the sides, and Leo stared at it for a second and then at her.
"That's a nappy," he said.
"That," said his mother, "is a nappy."
"I'm eightteen."
"You're eightteen," she agreed, "and you've got no boxers, and no jeans, and you've just wet yourself into next Tuesday, and there's another eight hours in this car. So." She picked the nappy up, gave it a couple of shakes so it fluffed, and looked at him. "Bottom up again."
He lifted his hips. She slid the nappy under him and he lowered himself onto it and — oh, oh — it was different from the wipe-shelf, it was different from anything. It was thick. Thick and soft and puffy, and it cupped him, actually cupped him, the whole of his bottom sitting inside a padded white nest, and the front panel came up between his legs and lay flat across his stomach and it was soft, so soft, and it crinkled, and something in Leo's chest did the flip again, harder this time.
"Okay," his mother said, and reached for the front panel to pull it up between his legs and close it over his belly — and stopped.
"Ah," she said.
Leo looked down at himself. His cock was standing straight up, hard, pink, and pointedly refusing to lie flat against his stomach the way the nappy needed it to. Thirteen centimetres soft had become eighteen and thick and it was now very much in the way of a piece of padded plastic being folded between his legs, and it would not be lying down.
"Right," his mother said. "That's a problem."
"I'm sorry—"
"It's not a problem, love, it's a logistics problem." She put a hand flat on his chest and pushed him gently back down, and then, with the other hand, she took hold of his cock — took hold of it properly, her fingers wrapping round the shaft, and Leo very nearly made a sound — and pushed it down, flat, toward his ass crease.
It resisted. He felt his own hardness fight her hand, and she pressed harder, and it hurt, a dull strange pressing ache at the base, and he made a face.
"Sorry, sorry," she said. "Bear with. Just—"
She pressed it down as far as it would go, flat and trapped, and with her other hand she pulled the front panel of the nappy up and over it and pressed it down, holding his cock pinned flat under the padding, and the ache at the base got worse and worse, and Leo lay there with his teeth gritted, hard and pinned and crinkling, and then she pulled the two tape-wings around and pressed them down, crrrt, crrrt, and let go.
And the nappy held.
The padding pressed down on him, thick and soft and tight, and his cock was pinned flat under it, trapped, aching softly at the base, and every time he breathed the padding pressed on him, and oh, this was not at all what he'd expected.
"Ow," he said, quietly, because it did actually hurt, a bit.
"I know," his mother said, and stroked his hair back off his forehead. "It'll ease. You'll go soft in a minute and it'll be fine."
"It won't," he said, "if you keep—" and then he stopped, because he didn't know how to finish the sentence, because the reason it wouldn't go soft was that his own mother had just spent five minutes wiping and powdering and handling him and now he was lying in a nappy, and none of that was helping.
"Up you come."
She scooped him up off the shelf and set him on his feet, and Leo stood in the middle of the toilet and looked down at himself and had a small, quiet crisis.
He was wearing a nappy. A big, white, thick, tape-fastened nappy, and it was obvious, it was puffy, it stood out from his hips in every direction, and it was so thick between his legs that when he tried to close them they wouldn't fully close — they came together and then stopped, blocked by the padded bulk, so that he had to stand with his feet slightly apart and his knees slightly out like a toddler, like a duck.
"Mum," he said. "Mum. Why am I in a nappy."
"Because," she said, calmly, packing the wipes and the powder back into the bag, "we didn't bring any spare boxers — we keep everything at the house, you know that — and you couldn't very well spend eight hours in a car with a bare ass. And I'm not having you wet the seat. So, Nappy."
"But why's it so thick?"
"It's the only one they had in your size." She looked at him and there was that little private smile again, the one he couldn't read. "You're a big boy, love. They don't make them small for boys your size."
Leo looked down at the puffy white bulk between his legs. He tried to close his knees and couldn't. He tried to look casual and couldn't.
"Ruby's going to see," he said.
"Ruby's going to see," his mother agreed. "Come on."
──────────────────────────────
Ruby saw.
She was leaning against the side of the car with her earbuds out and her arms folded, and she saw her brother come across the forecourt with his jacket held bunched in front of his crotch and his legs slightly apart, and she saw the puffy white plastic peeking out under the hem of his t-shirt, and her face lit up like a birthday.
"Oh my god," she said. "Oh my god. Is that a nappy?"
"It's not a nappy," said Leo, getting into the car, sitting down — and the nappy crinkled loudly under him as he sat, and he winced, because sitting in it pressed it up against him and the padding squashed and the whole thing crinkled, and Ruby heard it.
"It's a nappy," she said. "Mum. He's wearing a nappy."
"He wet his jeans," their mother said, sliding into the driver's seat. "No spares. It's sensible."
"He's eightteen."
"He is," their mother agreed. "And you'll be nineteen next month and we'll see how you do on a twelve-hour drive, won't we."
Ruby climbed in beside him and immediately leaned over to inspect him, and Leo pulled his jacket down over his lap to cover as much of the white bulk as he could, and Ruby laughed and poked the padded front of him through the jacket, which crinkled.
"Don't poke it—"
"It crinkles," Ruby said, thrilled. "Listen to it. It crinkles. Leo, you're a baby."
"I am not a baby—"
"You're a big fat baby in a nappy," she said, and sat back, and crossed her legs, and looked at him with the deep satisfaction of someone who has just found a new toy. "This is the best trip ever."
Their mother started the car.
"That's enough, you," she said to Ruby, but she was smiling, and she was smiling at the road, and she was smiling in a way that Leo, catching it in the corner of his eye, filed away in the same folder as everything else, in a small stack of things he didn't understand yet but was beginning to suspect he would.
He shifted in his seat. The nappy crinkled. His cock was still half-hard under the padding, pressed flat and trapped, and the padding pressed back, warm and soft and thick.
The car pulled back out onto the motorway, and the fields began to roll, and there were still eleven hours to go.
And somewhere under the crinkle, under the ache, under the burning humiliation of his sister's grin, Leo felt a small, warm, private thing settle into place in his chest — a thing that felt, weirdly, a lot like belonging.
