Retail Redefining BIS, and why chasing the old definition makes the game worse for you

Hey guys. This is a lengthy read, but if you are struggling with understanding BIS and want to truly know how to get the best out of your items, it's worth the read. I hate seeing people chase what some website on the internet says their BIS is, especially before the season even begins, and being upset when it doesn't drop. Spoiler, getting your "BIS" could actually LOWER your DPS.

I'm sure you've come across the word BIS. What's my BIS gear, what drops my BIS, I have to run this dungeon I hate over and over and over for my BIS, I can't trade this to my friend because it's BIS for me

Outside of enchants, trinkets, embellishments, and very fringe other situations such as set bonuses on rings, individual BIS items do not matter. The term BIS is so bad for the health of the players.

BIS means "best in slot". It was born in a time in the game where items were dramatically different. "This item" gave dramatically more main stat than that one. "This item" had an effect where others didn't. "This weapon" had the same damage but attacked faster than that one. That is not how WoW works now-a-days

Today, every item slot has the same number of main stat and the same number of secondary stats, with the secondary stats having a different balance. For example, my current ilvl 246 legs in game give 70 haste and 59 mastery, totaling 129 secondary stat. Every mail 246 legs will give 129 secondary stat, just allotted differently.

Now here is what BIS actually means today. BIS is the best secondary stat balance for your class. Not any one specific item.
Replacing a piece of gear with a "BIS" item can actually LOWER your DPS

Maybe even more importantly, if you don't have the entire list of gear some website tells you is your BIS, removing a piece currently equipped to replace it with a new "BIS" item you just farmed might actually make you WORSE.

Very rough hypothetical example, your stat allotment is best at 35% mastery, 30% haste, 20% crit, 15% vers. Your BIS "chunky" items are weapon, head, chest, legs, so they have your mastery/haste pair, but no other items you currently have are "BIS". Your equipped back and wrist have your priority stats, mastery/haste, but your BIS actually has crit/vers because they're your weaker items but still need to have some of them. You swap out your preferred stats for weaker stats because a list tells you to, and now you do less damage.

Here's 3 examples of "BIS" items that are all equal. No one piece of gear is important, the COMBINATION OF STATS is important. Armor/int/stam are all the same, so only showing secondary stats

Head Chest Legs Total Stats
85 Haste 50 Mastery 63 Haste 37 Vers 88 Vers 47 Mastery 132 Haste 185 Mastery 88 Vers
75 Haste 60 Mastery 57 Haste 78 Mastery 47 Mastery 88 Vers 132 Haste 185 Mastery 88 Vers
87 Haste 48 Vers 95 Mastery 40 Vers 45 Haste 90 Mastery 132 Haste 185 Mastery 88 Vers

I only used 3 item slots here because making a whole list of slots would be absurd, but I think it gets the point across. When you include every single slot, there is an insane amount of combinations that get you to the exact same place.

A list someone theory crafted or simulated cannot take into consideration the balance you already have, and you actually risk lowering your DPS following a list blindly (until you have every single exact piece, which is insanely difficult in and of itself, especially for the average player).

Thank you for reading my long winded post. I have tried to explain this to so many friends, guildmates, and people I pug with regularly, but it requires so much explanation to really get the idea across, so I decided to write it out for anyone who cared.

TLDR; Outside of trinkets, embellishments, and enchants, stop chasing a list someone on the internet created for you. All the items have the same total stat numbers, what matters is the balance of secondary stats. If you REALLY want to chase BIS, chase your classes secondary stat balance. That can be achieved with NUMBEROUS item combinations, not just what's on one singular list. That is why so many different BIS lists exist, because you can achieve the same thing many different ways

Retail Any tips for Kindo'Jan (Labyrinth final boss) as a ilvl310 Elemental Shaman?

Just spent 3 hours grinding through the entire Labyrinth, only 1 death during the Sullied Revenant boss (anyone know how he works???) and used every last one of my lives trying to kill Kindo'Jan and didn't manage to get him to even 25%. I know I'm not a great player, but I like to think that I'm somewhat competent, I've run up to +15's last season, I know my class and rotation, etc. I read the Wowhead guide, watched two different Kindo'Jan videos, I used consumables, etc. But the mechanics just aren't forgiving at all from a RNG standpoint.

In 6 of my 8 deaths, the Phoenix Loa appeared (you stand in one zone, Valeera in the other), and then an Armani Juggernaut spawns. Impossible to be in the Loa zone and also avoid getting knocked off by the Juggernaut, both are "location dependent" Insta-Kill mechanics. Nothing I can do, my class doesn't have any knockback prevention, suck it up and try again.

Other two times I just got killed by the summoned headhunter's axes. There isn't anything I can do if Kindo'Jan summons them back to back, 8 mobs with 2m hp wandering around doing ranged attacks. Can't kill them because ele shaman's big damage spells are hard cast. WHILE trying to do the rest of the mechanics. By the time I could even kill 4, there are probably another 4 spawning or a juggernaut. Ele shaman AOE is location dependent (Earthquake I mean, chain lightning does peanut damage and they often aren't close for it to hit multiple) so I can't AOE them down

Literally is there anything I can do? Its like the entire fight was designed to be as miserable as possible for Ele shaman.

(I know I'm whining but its genuinely so frustrating)

Retail How is retail meant to be played?

I just picked up WoW and I’m not sure how I should be engaging with the campaigns, specifically battle for Azeroth.
Everything seems way too easy and I haven’t really done anything besides the campaign quests. I finished the Drustvar chapter and by the end I was oneshotting almost any enemy including the entire dungeon on my own.
Now the next chapter is Stormsong valley and I’m basically invincible. All the quests are tagged Low Level. Not to mention the flying mounts which let me avoid half the enemies and shortens the quests even more.

What am I doing wrong here? Are you supposed to start a new character for every chapter? I know WoW isn’t known for its difficulty but how am I overleveled for the campaign after one chapter.

I chose Rogue Worgan and after the starting quests went straight to Kul Tiran to start the Battle for Azeroth chapters. Only other things I’ve done are herbalism related, which leveled up fast because there’s a herb every three feet.

Retail Is it worth it to switch specs?

Hi all! I’m pretty new to the game (been playing about 3ish months now), I have enjoyed playing frost mage, I’m up to about 320 ilvl and have done every mythic dungeon now at a +10 and have (almost) all heroic raid bosses done.

However, in every group im in, no matter how clean I am with my rotation, im always last or second to last in DPS ( still above tank just below all other DPS) . I know it has a lot to do with how things are tuned, but I’m worried that switching now will undo some of my gearing progress, and Arcane seems hard. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, I know someone has to be the bottom but the selfish part of me doesn’t want it to be me.

Retail Valeera's companion it’s fucking annoying

She keeps jumping around and pulling aggro from every enemy in the room, it's horrible. I've already tried giving her commands with the G key, but she still doesn't behave properly. Doing the Maze Delves with her is getting really stressful, Does anyone know how to make it stay still or be less stupid?

Retail How detrimental would it be to respec from subtlety to outlaw at lvl 85?

I have been thinking of switching spec on my rogue. I've never raided before but want to once I'm geared, and I also am not super liking how I only do damage as long as I'm in shadow dance. I'm considering going outlaw instead but not sure how punishing it would be to do now...?

Looking for a good direction to look for shield tanks. I know 2h tanking was recommended in other versions of wow but I really want to stick with shield. Would anyone know what main hand weapon I should be looking at for a dwarf tank?

Retail Easiest class to excel at the Labyrinth of Kindo’jan?

I want to make a solid run at the Labyrinth. I thought Delves were alright, but after one run at the Labyrinth, I know this is the kind of content I want to be doing. However, I am a stupid, bad player.

I do have a lot of alts, and I could focus on any of several 90s, so I wanted to ask what you all think is the best, easiest class for an old gamer. When I run my Hunter in selves, I have trouble keeping my pet alive if it’s tanking, and I have trouble keeping Valeera alive if she is tanking. My Paladin can tank for days, but with Valeera healing it’s just so slow. Same if my Priest is healing Valeera as DPS.

Thoughts? Suggestions? My Druid and Shammy also have also have decent gear. None of my characters have spectacular ilvls but all are within reach of good upgrades if I focus.

Retail Unable to trade loot at dungeon's end

As the title say, i am still unable to trade loot to other players at dungeon's end. I have 327 ilvl with full hero/myth gear. After looting the chest, any loot is immediately soulbound. I thought this is an issue with any addon but even without them, i am unable to trade.

Retail Currency here, there… absolutely everywhere?

I’ve played through Shadowlands, Dragonflight, and now Midnight. I’ve never really gave it a full send at learning the end game, but here I am now.

I’m playing a BM Hunter and at ilvl 275. I’m doing primarily delves and world quests and getting a whole lot of different currency.

I’m using it to upgrade my sets at vendors, at the lava forge thing to make the gear a set, and that’s about it. Some cosmetics here and there with the void light and delve currency.

What should I be doing with the currency though? I’m not a RPG noob in general, so the nagging feeling is that I shouldn’t be using any of my currency until I get to ”x” gear level where upgrades are more optimal.

I’m having to wiki everything. The use of the currency, where the vendors are (generally), and then Google images for where they are exactly. The where and what isn’t explained very well, but the how is solid imo. At least in terms of how to get the stuff.

Retail New player help

Hey everyone, I have just realised something pretty devastating and had no idea until last night.
First time really knuckling down and playing wow, just hit level 70 as a dwarf retribution paladin but I’ve been levelling through BFA and my gear level is only 56, I’m assuming that’s because it’s scaling in the time when that came out.

What’s the easiest way to get a higher item level from where I am so I can enjoy endgame content once hitting 80/90?

I don’t want to start a new character but if that’s easier please break it down to me gently.

Thanks in advance.

Retail Let’s say I want a toon just for questing..

Just so I don’t end up one shotting everything, would it make sense to stop my xp and just continue on? Or is there something I’m missing? I’m basically just wanting to quest and gather mats on one character and then my ults I’ll level all the way up.

Does this make the most sense? Thank you for the help!

Retail If your Labyrinth run bugs out

If your labyrinth run bugs out, boss dosnt register as dead or whatever...

Use your Kinduru's Spiriting Quill, it will port you straight to the treasure provided you cleared 3 rooms. Not a complete waste of a run that way.

Retail My hoarding problem

I am a bit unsure when is the right moment to use the crest I've been saving up.
I crafted 2 items with 80 hero crests each, but after that I stopped using them. I have no mythic gear yet, and I do have some hero 1-2 items. I m not sure if I should upgrade them, or if I should wait to convert the hero crests to mythic ones. The same for champion ones.
I have around 365 hero crests, 264 champion, 80 mythic.
No hero items higher than 2/6, and some champion 2/6 also.

Retail Did they retune Kindo'Jan? I cannot understand the people saying it's too easy

I'm ilvl 318 Ret pally, on t11 did the full 9 room clear, had heaps of boons. I've set valeera (lvl 59) to tank otherwise she just dies immediately. I see everyone saying they're killing the boss before the main fight starts or that it was too easy etc. I died 6 times to this guy. Either I get one shotted by the spinning blades, or I get the combo juggernaut + soak circles and despite the guides saying you can line it up so you get knocked into the circle, he's always too close so I have to take an angle that knocks me away from the circle and it's too late to get back. Wtf am I supposed to do QQ

I couldn't even get him below 50% and had to use my invuln shield on 3min cd. Idek if I have it in me to do the full 9 rooms again so it's going to be even harder without the boons. Plus I missed out on 3 delves worth of loot. God I just want the achieve this week but it's gonna be a lot of grinding

Edit: Okay probably 15 wipes and many many glitched runs later I've finally done it!! It took 11 minutes according to DBM. Thank god that's over. This is with the massive caveat that I had to switch to Holy since as ret I had to spend the whole fight healing Valeera anyway. Way easier as holy.

Retail Struggling with M+ altar of fangs

Hi all,
I've tanked everything on my guardian druid in a +10 with ease but can't seem to get past the first area of Altar of Fangs on a +10. I'm pretty well geared: 315 ilvl with appropriate enchants and gems and what not all equipped, yet, every run I do seems to wipe one too many times in the first area where a vote to end the run occurs.
I've watched the all the available videos on YouTube on this dungeon but maybe I'm just not understanding timing of the mob abilities or positioning. Maybe I'm not popping defensives at the correct time? Seems my health just gets blasted down really quick even with my defensives up.

I guess my noob question for the community is:

  1. When do I pop my defensives and on what mobs?
  2. What positioning do I need for these mobs? Do I fight near the totems that need to be deactivated?

Sorry and thanks,

*edit and latest update:
Thank you everyone for all your responses and help, much appreciated. I was able to easily go through a +8 with getting the mechanics down with your tips. Maybe the difference makers were:
1. Don't get hit in the back
2. Soothe enraged targets
3. Stay away from totems pulsing dmg
4. Dont go through packs for the pulls
5. Typhoon or kite the melee stacks

Seems these mechanics in my end in the PUG solved us all from dying.

Thanks again all of you!!!

What should my key bar look like 1-5 as a prot warrior hitting level 15, then level 20? I tanked rfc first time ever and got a 7/10 rating from the group. Someone else was putting out insane damage lol. Feel like if I were the higher level member of the group id have been holding aggro better... idk if its me, my keybar or me and my keybar.

"Ula'tek AOTC Only"

How the hell am I supposed to get AOTC if people only accept AOTC??? I don't understand. I get that they want people to know the fight. I know the mechanics. I understand what to do. I have tried it a couple times, down to even 10%, but then something goes wrong and the group falls apart. How can I get this if I'm supposed to have already gotten this?? What can I do??
