This is probably both a rant and an ask for help, so bear with me.
I recently completed The Second Dream, which was absolutely epic, and I’m genuinely enjoying Warframe. There’s clearly an amazing game here, and I can see why people love it so much. However, I’m starting to feel a bit fatigued by the progression, and I think the new player experience has some serious issues that aren’t immediately obvious when people recommend this game to newcomers.
I’m around 60 hours in, and I’ve spent quite a bit of time researching guides. I don’t necessarily mind doing homework for a game this complex, but even the guides can get overwhelming when you’re trying to understand several systems at once. I’ve watched multiple guides specifically about mods because, honestly, I feel like the game does a pretty poor job of explaining one of its most fundamental mechanics. (Like literally my YouTube feed is filled with recommended guides for beginners at this point )
Even the tutorial quests haven’t helped me understand the modding system as much as I expected. I obviously still have a ton of things to learn, and I’m deliberately avoiding researching everything at once because I don’t want to overwhelm myself. For now, I’m mostly following the main quests because that’s the one thing the game consistently points me toward. Outside of that, I often find myself wondering what I’m actually supposed to be working toward.
I’m still using Excalibur and Rhino, and I desperately want to start collecting and trying out other Warframes. That’s one of the things I’m most excited about, but 60 hours in, I feel like I’m struggling to make that happen.
I also haven’t spent the starting Platinum I received because I don’t know what the smartest use for it is. Then I ran into another frustrating situation: I crafted a new weapon, waited around 12 hours for it to finish, and when I went to equip it, I realized I needed inventory slots to make the most of it. I also discovered that I have a limited number of Warframe slots. I had to get rid of my Kunai just to equip another secondary weapon.
And that’s where I started wondering. am I supposed to spend Platinum on slots this early, and if so, which ones should I prioritize?
I know trading is an option, but as a beginner, I have no idea what I could realistically farm or sell that an experienced player would actually want. I’m not expecting everything to be handed to me, but I wish the game gave new players a clearer idea of how these systems work and how to make informed decisions with their limited resources.
Another thing that made the experience more disappointing was that my duo, who also plays MMORPGs, gave up on the game pretty early. That’s a bummer because I was genuinely looking forward to experiencing it together. I even tried doing research for both of us and simplifying things wherever I could, but there was only so much I could explain when I was still trying to figure everything out myself.
And that’s ultimately my biggest criticism.Warframe seems to expect new players to rely heavily on third-party guides, videos, wikis, and community resources just to understand basic progression systems.and don’t get me wrong, this community has been super helpful and one of the best i had come by.
I don’t mind a game having depth. I don’t mind having to research builds, experiment with mods, or work toward long-term goals. In fact, that’s part of what makes a game like this appealing to me.
But there’s a difference between a game having depth and a game failing to communicate its systems clearly. I want to discover things naturally, make progress at my own pace, and understand why I’m doing what I’m doing without constantly having to pause the game and look up another guide.
Maybe I’m missing something, and veterans will tell me that everything starts making sense eventually. I’m open to that possibility, and I’m definitely not trying to say that the game is bad. I’m enjoying it enough to care about these issues in the first place.
Edit: well tbh i didn’t expect this kind of support. Originally i wrote this post out of frustration but i was met with lots and lots of support. Thanks to everyone who gave me advice and offered to help. I probably never witnessed sth like this in my gaming career lol. But i wanna say i love you guys ❤️
