I’d never suggest that Cannonball Adderley is “underrated”. He plays on too many classic dates to mention.
I am comfortable saying, however, that some of the titles in his vast catalog can be overlooked in favour of his more recognisable output.
This record has been sitting in my want list for a minute. I can’t recall when I first heard the title track, but I’d instantly clocked it as special and added it to the list.
It’s a funky, soulful record that at times finds the sweet spot between spiritual and fusion, kind of Mwandishi-vibes, but much funkier. Maybe sitting between Mwandishi and Headhunters, via the soul-jazz avenue.
George Duke is absolutely shredding on this one. (Rhodes for days). He penned the title track.
The rest of the lineup is top tier;
Walter Booker
Airto
Nat Adderley
Buck Clarke
Roy McCurdy
Ernie Watts
Alvin Battiste
Mike Deasy
Oh, and a production credit for Axelrod!
