UT2004 BREAKING: Unreal Tournament 2004 is back!
OldUnreal just posted this announcement on their Discord:
"Welcome Back, Unreal Tournament 2004!
Hi everyone! Some of you were probably wondering why we've been so quiet in the past couple of months. Today, we can finally reveal (part of) the answer: we've been working on a new side project! With Epic's blessing and with the help of some new team members, we are bringing Unreal Tournament 2004 (UT2004) back.
This means that we are going to publish an installer that downloads the original disc image for UT2004, installs the game, and applies patches to it. We are also going to start publishing patches that modernize the game, make it compatible with Windows Vista or later, Linux x86-64 and aarch64 (Raspberry Pi and similar), and Mac OS 10.9 or later, fix bugs, and implement quality-of-life changes.
Yes, you read that right. UT2004 will soon be available to download once again. Free of charge. This is a community-run effort but we’re excited to make the game easier to access and play again. We have been working on this for quite some time now and have made enough progress to start inviting the first batch of testers.
Highlights so far include:
- We now natively support modern Linux and macOS systems with 64-bit Intel and ARM/Apple CPUs
- You can now play the game or run a server on a Raspberry Pi 4 or 5, albeit at a lower frame rate than on a PC!
- The Linux and macOS distributions of the patch now include a fully functional UCC with an UnrealScript compiler (UCC make) and texture compression support
- The Linux and macOS distributions now use SDL3 instead of SDL1
- D3D9Drv and fullscreen support are fully functional in the Windows 64-bit client
- We dealt our first (minor) blow to the editor goblin! We fixed several crash bugs, restored some broken functionality, and, most importantly, the editor will no longer freeze for several seconds when you click a viewport
❓ Q&A ❓
Some questions might have popped into your head as you read this news. Let us try to answer some of them.
Q: Will the OldUnreal patches be compatible with the latest official version of the game?
A: Yes, for the most part. Unpatched clients can play on patched servers and patched clients can play on unpatched servers.
Most mods should also continue to work as before. The only exceptions are mods that perform game version checks and exclude players with unknown game versions.
Unfortunately, AntiTCC is one of those mods.
Q: Will AntiTCC be updated to support the new patches?
A: Yes. Wormbo gave us permission to update AntiTCC. This is still a work in progress, though.
Q: As a server admin, how do I ensure that players with the new version can continue to play on my servers?
A: We're aware of a network compatibility problem caused by an unofficial patch.
This problem results in players with the new version not being able to connect to (some) old servers.
You can mitigate this problem by (re)installing the official 3369.3 version of the offending files on your server.
Similarly, players that have installed this unofficial patch might need to reinstall the official 3369.3 files to play on updated servers.
In the meantime, we're looking into an alternative solution that does not require reinstalling the 3369.3 patch.
Q: Can I apply the OldUnreal patch to the retail version of the game?
A: On Windows: absolutely. Do keep in mind, however, that we do not support 32-bit CPUs.
On other platforms, your mileage may vary. Patching existing Linux/Mac OS X/macOS installations of the game is possible, but it could require a fair amount of manual effort.
We recommend installing the game from scratch following the instructions we provide in our README.
Q: What are your plans for the near future?
A: We are going to address the rough edges and unfinished features in the new version, and try our best to publish a preview installer and patch ASAP.
In the meantime, we will also work on some quality-of-life improvements and on the long list of editor fixes we want to port over from our other projects.
Q: What is the timeline?
A: We are currently inviting server admins and modders to join our internal tester group. We're aiming to release a public test version within the next two months.
Q: How can I contribute?
A: We will be needing testers in the near future. Keep an eye on our Discord server to see when.
Q: Are you getting paid for this project?
A: No. We're doing this for free because we're fans of the game and we like a challenge. In fact, projects like these cost us a bit of money for server hosting, software licenses and subscriptions, certificates, etc, as we independently operate the games ourselves.
Q: Who is responsible for this project?
A: The main developers of the Windows installer and the patches are Buggie, Marco/Dots, Deaod, Metallicafan212, Piglet, CacoFFF, AnthraX, and Smirftsch.
The patch also includes contributions from Wormbo, Shambler, and Ryan C. Gordon (icculus).
We would also like to thank Epic for making this possible.
Please direct all support requests or questions to [us/OldUnreal], not Epic Games."

UT99 Looking for playtesters for two crazy new UT99 Mutators (SuperAiBotz & dynamic scaling Rat Morpher!)
Hey everyone!
I've been vibe-coding some fresh mutators for Unreal Tournament 1999 and I need some brave souls to help me playtest them and break things.
Here is what I've got cooking:
Rat Mutator (v2): Replaces the "Feign Death" mechanic. Instead of faking dead, you morph into a playable 3D rat with a forced 3rd-person camera perspective. The twist: Your size dynamically scales with your score. Zero/negative frags? You're a tiny stealth mouse. Leading the match with 30+ frags? You become a giant Kaiju-sized mutant rat that physically blocks hallways. (Features a custom 3D model and animations!)
SuperAiBotz: An adaptive, table-based reinforcement learning system built purely inside UnrealScript. Bots analyze their deaths, track your habits, dynamically change their weapon preferences, and treat high-danger path nodes as high-cost zones. They actually learn how to counter your playstyle over time and save their "memory" in a persistent config file across matches.

UT99 ReShade shaders running in UT99 and UT2004 on macOS
I made MacShade, a free tool that brings ReShade to macOS. UT99 (OldUnreal patch 469) and UT2004 are two of the games I am using it with.
Before/after screenshots are attached. Shaders run as post effects on top of the game's OpenGL output, so no mods or game files are touched. The ReShade menu opens in game with the hotkey, and effects can be toggled with a hotkey as well.
It's still experimental for OpenGL games. Fullscreen works, though there is a setting for games that don't play nice. If you play UT on a Mac and want to try it, I'd love to hear what works and what doesn't. Its free and open source, and I made it basically for my favorite games, but it works with many other games too!

UT2004 Really love just playing UT2004 campagin, but hate how limited playable character selection is. Had to resort to mods.
I'd really love to play some robots or aliens, especially my favorite poster boy Dominator. I'm one of those players who will never pick humans if I have a choice.

UT General GloriousEggroll (Proton-GE) ported Unreal Tournament 2004 to Unreal Engine 5
Have you seen this?! https://x.com/GloriousEggroll/status/2111219315014074772?s=20
According to his post, it includes all game modes, map modes and vehicles. His goal is to experiment with modern features like a native Vulkan renderer, widescreen support, FSR and ray tracing.
He plans to open source it, without the original assets. Those are freely available via OldUnreal.

UT99 What mod launcher to use for Unreal Tournament 1999?
I find it a bit of hassle to launch mods manually. So, are there mod launchers do you recommend so I no longer have to launch mods manually? I don't want to spend more time to setup mods just to play them

UT3 Sto cercando il nome una mappa custom di UT3 deathmatch circolare con una colonna sonora industrial rock (inizia con un'introduzione a base di applausi) in stile Nine Inch Nails - The Hand That Feeds. Il clapping è abbastanza veloce e poi seguono chitarra elettrica e poi tutto il resto.

UT General I used to always be optimistic about a new Unreal game, but with what's been going on in the industry in the last few years, I'm joining team "it's better off dead"
Sorry if it's a bit of a downer of a post, it's just a thought that's dwelling in there and needed to get off my chest. What's been happening the last few years just kind of sucks. MTX continue to be more predatory, companies do more shady shit, more and more of people's legitimate purchases get taken away from them, studio shutdowns, the prevalence of GenAI in games, and so on.
I mean look at Fortnite, imagine if your fan favourite character was locked behind a battle pass you needed to grind, or you needed to hope they were present on a shop rotation where if available you need to pay like 10-15 bucks, for a single character avatar.
Even if the IP gets taken out of Epic's hands, who's gonna handle it? A studio under the helm of a big publisher is going to also riddle it with predatory and overpriced mtx. An indie studio certainly cannot afford to purchase the IP, but even if they did, it might be very small in scope and I doubt the small team would be able to replicate the gameplay, feel, and visuals of a UT game, even a simpler looking one like 2004, not without taking a very long time developing it anyway. I know recently there have been some discussions about if the visuals UT typically have matters for the game, I think all the games have their own defining artstyles, and were visually groundbreaking for the timeperiod each entry released in, so yes, being graphically impressive is important to the game for me.
I'd prefer if the IP goes into public domain but I doubt even that would bring the series back in any meaningful way. UT4 was canned, and UT3 wasn't most people's favourites, but I'd say the game died with some semblance of honour at least, imagine if UT4 got fortnite's treatment (and as a reminder, the actual original fortnite also basically flopped and was replaced by the battle royale mode), it wouldn't feel the same at all, it'd be a paraded corpse.
It'd feel shameful if that actually happened. Lots of people fucking hate fortnite, I don't want my favourite series to be associated with such legacy. Anyone else has similar sentiments?

UT2004 UT2004 demo tools
Hey guys, I just wanted to share a set of tools to inspect UT2004's demo4 files.
Back in the UT2004 days I created the =MWatch= software that automatically downloaded dependencies so that one could play back demos that would have otherwise failed to play.
With all the recent AI coding agent fuss I thought I'd try to see if I could use one to decode the demo4 format. When I told a friend, he got interested as well. You can see the some early result below.
Code: https://github.com/clashman/demo4-tools/
PS: I also added a (non-vibecoded, heh) demo_play.py utility to start a demo with the original game. No dependency downloads so far, though.

UT99 Does anyone recognize either of these (custom) maps in UT99?
I'm trying to identify two Assault maps from the original Unreal Tournament (UT99). They may have been custom maps, but they felt very polished and almost official.
First map:
It looked like some kind of Sun Temple, Aztec temple, or Mayan temple. The setting was at night. One team started inside caves or tunnels in a mountain area and had to cross a bridge over a toxic-looking river. After crossing the bridge, there was a relatively simple temple structure where the defending team was located. That's about all I can remember.
Second map:
This one started in what looked like a large cemetery or graveyard with many visible tombstones. It was also set at night. One of the objectives was to ring or activate a bell tower, which would open a large gate or iron bars. After that, attackers had to climb a tower using stairways. The final objective, if I remember correctly, was at the top floor. There was a central area with several statues attached to pillars, and I think the attackers had to shoot or destroy those statues to complete the map.
I vaguely remember the map's name being something related to Cemetery, Masons, Mausoleum, or something similar, but I'm not sure.

UT2004 (ut2004) EU Server?
Hello everyone, I recently picked up the game again and I am having so much fun, I didn't have in years.
Question is: I saw there are servers but with modded weapons, modded maps etc etc... I think they are ok, but it's just not for me. Are there communities (discord etc) that like me (an oldie gamer) , appreciate good old vanilla maps?
I personally love maps like plunge (F4A)

UT99 For those who are nostalgic for the days of GameSpy3D, I created my own clone for modern Windows called LameSpy.
Ever since external server browsers went out of fashion, I miss being able to monitor the multiplayer activity of all of my games in one place.
Since I've been running some dedicated servers for Unreal Tournament 99/2004 and Q3A, I always wanted a way to just monitor them all in one place like GameSpy3D allowed you to do. So I wrote a classic-style server browser for modern Windows called LameSpy. Check out the video demo and the website if you are interested: https://lamespy.org
Both the website and application offer tutorials to help you get your classic games set up for modern Windows. Frag on!

UT2004 Please, i am begging, somebody teach me how to properly run this Mod.
I am trying to play the mod Out Of Hell off moddb for Unrealtournament 2004. I have installed UT2004 from the oldunreal site. I have downloaded the Out Of Hell patch and merged it with the UT2004 folder. I have downloaded the Out Of hell base game and put it in a seperate folder from UT2004, yet still within a folder containing the two. I have edited the start and targetbox within properties of both the UT2004 shortcut and the out of hell shortcut to match eachother. I feel like ive done everything right, yet each and every single fucking time i get a badmod history app:init error.
Why? I dont know what ive done wrong. I dont know where else to go. It seems like everyone else has downloaded this mod and played just fine. What the fuck is wrong with me? Am i really that smooth-brained?
Please, at this point, I need somebody to sit down with me and guide me step by step. I really am that fucking stupid, but by god almighty i really want to play this game. Please, I need some helo.

UT2004 Made a better skin browser for UT2004
Hey everyone,
Got tired of scrolling through the game's built-in skin browser in the settings with like 300 custom skins installed, so I made a mutator that adds a proper skin browser!
What it does:
- search by name, race, model or texture package
- favorites, plus sort/group by race or model family
- toggle between portrait and a 3D preview you can rotate, zoom and pan
- preview red/blue team skins, taunts and voice packs before you pick one
- adds a Skins tab to the ESC menu mid-match, so you can swap and it applies on respawn. Way easier than digging through the settings
You turn it on through the normal Mutators menu. It's made for the OldUnreal patch (3374). It might work on 3369 but I haven't tested other versions yet.
It works in Instant Action and online. Online, the server still has its usual skin-change cooldown.
Planning to add next:
- keyboard navigation
- a recently used list
- maybe a grid view of portraits
Bug reports and feature ideas are welcome. If you end up using it and finding it helpful, a star on GitHub helps a lot!!

UT2004 UT2004 Australia: Sydney server, games Fri/Sat nights (classic modes, old and new players welcome)
Been running a UT2004 server in Sydney called kAoS and we're after more Aussie players, whether you've been here since 2004 or just reinstalled it.
Mostly the classic team modes (TAM, Freon, ArenaMaster), plus two we built ourselves: Kontrol and Bounty. The mutators have been updated recently, the anti-cheat is current, and we've got a good spread of maps.
We're usually on Friday and Saturday from 8pm Sydney time.
IP: open 51.161.212.19:7877
If you want to know when games are on, or you're stuck getting the game running on the newer OldUnreal patch, join our Discord & checkout the Stats page. Happy to help with settings and install questions.
Anyone else playing in Australia or NZ? Keen to hear what you're running.

UT General Secret Level on Prime - Unreal Tournament episode "Xan"
I know this is probably old news on here but just in case some new Redditor's haven't seen it, there was a show on Prime called "Secret Level" which was an animation anthology similar to Netflix's "Love, Death and Robots", except this show had short films based on games.
While I was watching it, I was shocked as shit to come across an episode called Xan which was about Xan Kriegor, the final boss in Unreal Tournament single player.
The show included some of the iconic weapopns (no shock combos unfortunately), characters such as the Necris and Malcolm. It was clear the people who made this film were big fans of the game.
If you haven't seen it, or didn't know about it, definitely go check it out. Seeing as we'll never see another Unreal game again, this scratched some of that UT itch I've been having for decades.

UT2004 Silly Hats Only - The Home of iCTF in 2k4
With our TWL sponsored 3v3 round-robin tournament winding down, I wanted to remind everyone that the Silly Hats Only community is the home of iCTF in UT2004 and we welcome all skill levels and iCTF gametypes. We’ve got lots of news coming out of our community…
Tournament winding down: one more round-robin match will determine the two teams who go to the final championship match! Who will face team Blacklist, will it be the Jabroni’s or the upcoming Previously Ugly Kids!??
Expanding PUB nights: We’ve recently added an addition iCTF PUB night on Thursdays @ 8:30p EST. We still play on Tuesdays at the same time, mostly on our Chicago server (IP: 74.91.115.8).
3: New mutator working: We’ve been vibe-coding! With our discord stats bot comes OpenSkill data on every player on our servers; we’ve begun to implement a team balancer mutator that will use the mu and sigma data for each player to attempt to balance teams for PUB matches. It’s a work in progress but we’re confident that it’ll help bring UT2004 into the more modern gaming environment.
4: Another tournament??? The feedback for this tournament (partnered with TeamWarfareNetwork) has been overwhelmingly positive! The admins over at Silly Hats has been discussing doing another tournament sooner rather than later. Check our discord for more info!!
5: Reminder that we also have Vanilla iCTF as a voteable gametype on our servers map voting menu AND we’re looking to add PIG iCTF for those interested!
Silly Hats Discord: https://discord.gg/EbWt7F3tfk
