Race/Event New year, new chance to buy your way into Norseman (for charity)

Post image
18 Upvotes

New year, new opportunity to buy yourself a Norseman start. There's currently a listing on auksjonen.no with an entry slot for the Norseman Xtreme Triathlon 2027 (race day 7 August 2027).

The current high bid sits at ~110,000 NOK (roughly €10.300). Steep, yeah — but this isn't a scalper cashing in. It's run through NRK's annual "TV-aksjonen" (the national broadcaster's charity drive), sold with no reserve price, and every krone goes to this year's cause, the Norwegian Refugee Council (Flyktninghjelpen).

Training questions Why do you do endurance sports?

I was watching a reel on instagram that was talking about a high correlation between trauma and ppl getting into endurance sports.

I’ve suffered pretty serious trauma , but I never thought my interest in endurance sport’s is tied back to my trauma.

For me I love the burn, I love my body feeling worked, it’s gives me something to do and work towards, and I like the feeling that I am progressing towards something.

I’m curious why other ppl get into endurance sports.

Injury and illness HOPELESS ATHLETE (pls help)

• Upvotes

I am a 19 year old male and I was diagnosed with mono at the end of july. I am a serious category 1 cyclist and was competing in Europe at the time and had to come home. I was so crushed because I had been training and looking forward to racing there this entire year and had to go home after only being there for 2 days. I remained at home for 2 months. I was pretty much bed bound, resting all day. My acute symtoms only lasted about a week. However the fatigue kicked in pretty fast. I did everything your told, ate extremely healthy, rested, slept 8-9 hours every night, and avoided all exercise. At the end of september I had to return to college and its been very hard. I have enough energy to go to class and study but not much more. Every time I try and go socialize, or do any light exercise my fatigue gets way worse the next day. I have been struggling a lot with my mental health because cycling is my passion and what makes me happy, and not being able to do it is making me very depressed. I have serious dreams of being a pro and even had a domestic elite team lined up for this year, which has now all fallen apart because of mono. All of my peers dont understand how bad my fatiuge is and think im being dramatic since its now been 3 months. I go to class each day and spend the rest of the day resting in my apartment. Its very lonely and I truly hate my life right now. I dont look forward to anything anymore and dread waking up each day. Im so scared of never being the same as I was before and don't know when this will end.

edit:Yes I am currently working with a doctor, however I want more advice than just be patient and rest. I am also looking into seeing a sports psychologist.

Something Useful! Rowing + Marksmanship - An indoor Biathlon called Split Shot

Thumbnail gallery
2 Upvotes

I know it’s not exactly Tri-specific, but…

Split Shot is a free indoor biathlon style event you can do in your basement.

Biathlon is cool, but almost nobody has access to it. 10m Olympic pistol is fantastic, but not very athletic, and not everyone has 33+ ft of basement. Rowing is the ultimate in endurance tests but pretty boring.

So I came up with Split Shot. It combines sprint and endurance rowing with one-handed marksmanship, and it’s harder than it sounds.

What you need: a rowing machine, any .177 pellet pistol (CO2, pump or PCP), a pellet trap, and about 20 ft. You shoot from 5 m (16.4 ft).

How it works: you row a leg, then shoot a stage at a 23 mm black. You do that four times. Every miss is 100 m of extra rowing before the next leg. One clock runs the whole time, and total time is the score.

Short: 4 × 750 m, 5 shots per stage

Full: 4 × 1500 m, 10 shots per stage

Long: 4 × 2500 m, 15 shots per stage

You shoot standing, one-handed, with no support and open sights only. Single-shot and magazine pistols are separate divisions, and so are Concept2 and WaterRower. The scoresheet prints on one page and has a scale check built in, so everyone shoots the same target.

My first short course: 24:22.9, 6 total misses. It was really hard!

It’s free and not a business; I just think it’s fun.

Two Page Target + Rules

One Page Target

If you try it, post your time and tag me. I would love to hear what you think

Be safe and follow all local laws!

Injury and illness Anyone switch to structured run-walk intervals on the run leg and actually get faster?

After fighting off recurring Achilles flare-ups and calf stiffness over the past two seasons, my coach suggested testing a 9:1 run-walk interval on the run leg for my next Olympic distance race.

Ego-wise, it feels strange to deliberately walk for 60 seconds through aid stations when you're still feeling relatively fresh at mile 2. But on my last brick workout, my heart rate stayed noticeably lower, my form didn't deteriorate in the final two miles, and my overall split was within twenty seconds of my continuous run pace with zero tendon irritation the next morning.

For masters athletes who made the switch to structured intervals on race day, did you stick with it?

Diet / nutrition Did you get a sweat test? Do you use the data?

I got a sweat test done in Orange County a while back and learned about my fluid and sodium loss. I've been using that data all summer. I've been drinking up to 6 bottles on my longer bricks (longest was 94 mile ride + 9 mile run). Each bottle with 90g of carbs and 600mg of sodium. So around 28 ounces of fluid, 100-120g of carbs and 720mg of sodium per hour. Sometimes with extra gels or electrolytes in the transition/run if I felt I needed them.

I've also done a couple of 5-6 hour rides and there was a moment I had to stop eating/drinking. I felt bloated and nauseous. Thenagain no bonking...

I come from running marathons and eating 90g+ per hour in gel form with zero issues. So I attribute the discomfort to the amount of fluid and sodium.

The longest distance I've raced is 70.3 and I'm planning on doing my first full in 2027. it's hard to imagine drinking my required amount of water and electrolytes on a full.

Curious if those of you who race 70.3s and 140.6s get sweat tests and how much do you actually use that data? Or do you just go by feel on the specific day? I do try to adjust with temperature, but its been a warm summer here in socal and some of these bricks have been in 85-90 degree weather.

If you do get tested and use the data:

Where did you get tested? Or do you use a sensor like hDrop?

Would you recommend them?

Did it change the way you fuel/hydrate?

Something Useful! Here's a code for 20% off Roka glasses if you'd like to use. (Not selling nor promo)

I was about to throw these codes away and figured I'd post here in case any of you would like to use them. I bought prescription glasses and sunglasses this year and they are a game changer for me, especially running through the summer. They don't slide off your face because of sweat!

I don't think this violates rule #3, but I guess we'll see.

Bike shopping Adding Aerobars to A Pinarello Dogma F12 and MOST Talon

Hi there,

I've found a good deal on a Pinarello.

I want to use it as a road bike, but I have some triathlon races planned over the next few months.

  1. How easy would it be to replace the handlebars with something compatible with aerobars?

  2. Are there aerobars that exist for the bike already?

Thanks so much for the help!

How do I start? Trying to get into triathlon! Any tips?

Hi everyone! (sorry if I have poor English)

Just some context, it's been in my interest and my dream since long ago to participate and successfully complete an Ironman! But I never had the time to consider the training for running and biking because I was a highly competitive swim athlete and only focused on swimming (swam since i was 5 y/os). Now that it's been more than 3 years since I've stopped from involving in competitive swimming (or any sports), I decided to start getting into something I'm interested in! I might try to start joining local marathon/duathlon/triathlon and build it up until ironman 70.3 etc. If we're talking about goals, I'm planning to participate into Ironman 70.3 next year on November 2027. Please do tell me if it's doable or it would be too hard for me.

I never really had proper running and biking training so any tips to get started on it? I don't mind tips on swimming too if you wanna share, perhaps swimming for triathlon might be different right? Maybe what type of bike to get started with? Run advice? Or even any advices generally to get consistent? Oh and for the long time I hated running so I might need advice on that haha. Honestly I'm really rusty since I've left sports long ago. My age is 19. Thank you for responding!

Recovery Anyone experienced prolonged recovery and unusually high HR after a full Ironman?

I completed my first full Ironman 8 weeks ago in 9:52, after averaging around 15–18 hours of training per week.

Ever since, my heart rate response during exercise has been completely different. Before the race, I could comfortably run at 5:00–5:10 min/km with a steady Z2.

Now I have to slow down to around 5:50–6:00 min/km to maintain the same HR. My heart rate also rises much faster than before and is both difficult to control as well as bringing it back down.

My HRV has remained below baseline (around 88–94 vs. my usual 105), despite significantly reducing training and taking time off.

I also recently experienced some chest discomfort after a swim session, which has since resolved. I’ve been medically evaluated, with a normal ECG and routine blood tests. They didn’t find anything, but I have been advised to avoid strenuous exercise for now.

Has anyone experienced something similar after a full Ironman? How long did it take before your HR response and performance returned to normal?

Swimming Panama City Ironman

Hey guys! I’m doing my first triathlon in a couple of weeks and was wondering if anyone here has done Panama City before. I’ve heard the water can be pretty warm around that time, so I’m not sure if it’s worth getting a wetsuit or if I should just swim without one. Any advice would be appreciated!

Training questions Training question

Just did a 100 mile ultramarathon, now want to transition into doing an Ironman. Either Jacksonville or Texas. Jacksonville would be ideal probably since it gives me more time.

Today is October 17th, I believe the race is may 16. Would I have enough time to get sufficient training in? My goal would be sub 11:30. Just want to see what people think. I’ve biked a decent amount, although the swim would be something I’ve never really done. Although I am a good swimmer.

Gear questions What watch to get

I’m looking to get into triathlons. I already do some very long distance running and a lot of cycling. I want to be able to track my progress better and be able to track my swimming. I don’t rly need to see my splits/ speed whilst doing the activity (in fact I often prefer to see my distance at the end of my runs) but I’m still looking to get tracking of my heart rate which is why I’ve been looking to get a watch. I will only be wearing it while working out. What are your recommendations?

Training questions Self Trained Triathletes Biggest Struggles

As a beginner (1 sprint done at 1:37h, first olympic in 1.5 months) self trained triathlete I encounter all sorts of challenges and struggles. One the biggest are - I have no idea if I'm good or not compared to the benchmarks, I'm not sure if my plan is well suited for me, and there's a lot of overthinking with everything that relates to structure, nutrition etc.

I find myself watching countless of youtube videos and trying to match the pieces.

I wonder if that's just me or any other beginner self trained out here can relate to this challenges, and how do you overcome them?
