Obese people and roller coasters: a much needed discussion about weight restrictions
First and foremost is my condolences to the families of Rosy Esparza , Hassan Kariem & add to the person who died at Six Flags New England. but the reoccurring theme here is that they were all obese people.Rosy was very short and very heavy... You may remember the name from the six flags over texas incident. Also from two thousand four , the casualty at six flags , new england he was reported to be five foot tall and over two hundred and forty pounds , and his restraint could not close properly... The man on Goliath was also a very large fellow, obviously over 300 pounds. So yes, well, this tragedy could have been avoided with seat belt or with better trained attendants.I don't want this to put a blemish on roller coasters or for any parks to close because of this , because attendance will be down

How could/would a rider losing consciousness on a coaster like Goliath impact their safety?
I’m curious if this was a freak accident caused by two separate incidents. Would it have been reasonably possible for him to keep himself in the seat if he was conscious if the harness did somehow fail? Or was he doomed regardless of passing out?

This is what I want to replace X2
Aside from a new 4D coaster obviously I really want a Giga wing coaster to replace X2, Ik it’s probably nearly impossible but still just imagine looking at a 300+ foot tall wing coaster claiming the record for worlds tallest inversion, let me know what you want to replace X2!

Are all B&M Clamshell Restraints equally as Safe?
After the tragic accident and loss that occurred in Georgia, this led me to suspect that certain B&M's in shadier parks (such as Portaventura), which I've visited, might have defective or highly worn out paws on the clamshell ratcheting mechanism?
The worn out paws in the clamshells can affect the proximity sensor (why? because they get the grease on the lens of the sensor) and therefore result in a lot of parks using their rides in service mode with manual restraint checks for each dispatch. Shambhala has horrible dispatching for example, and there's been (unverified) reviews on Google stating that the restraints have notched open in very large increments mid-ride.
B&M is a safe company that creates safe rides - but how safe are some of their rides 5, 10, 15+ years after poor maintenance?

November Japan theme park recommendations to travel with girlfriend that won't ride somerollercoasters or thrill rides?
I'm going to Japan in November and I've been thinking about going to a theme park. However, my girlfriend isn't the type to ride most rollercoasters or thrill rides. She might be convinced for some, but she's not liking anything that goes upside down or is too tall.
She will ride attractions like log flumes, Breakdance and some smaller or junior coasters, but not big ones like Top Spin or a drop tower.
We'll be in Tokio-Kyoto-Osaka though I'm willing to move a bit if it's worth it.
Which theme parks would you recommend that are fun for a couple like this?
I'm also open to less stndard parks or experiences if there are any worth it.

People keep dying on roller coasters. Should theme park fans be scared?

Can we address the elephant in the room regarding the SFOG incident?
First and foremost, sending condolences to the family, but I don’t like how people are gonna try and turn this into an anti-roller coaster narrative. The reality is that there needs to be weight restrictions on these rides just like they have height restrictions for people that are too short or too tall. attendants need to turn away people who are simply too obese to ride. This simply could’ve prevented the tragedy that happened.

Mako Closed at SeaWorld Orlando Following Six Flags Goliath Incident

How do you feel about the Goliath incident at Six Flags?
Basically the above. What we were told was never gonna happen on a ride, happened. I assume the outcome of the investigation hasn’t been released yet but do you think he was even locked in properly? If he wasn’t then surely the train wouldn’t even have left the station due to safety mechanisms.
I’m a theme park fanatic and I’m not generally scared of rides or heights but I’ve got a theme park trip in a couple of days and it’s not the news I really want to see right now.
All in all, I hope those who were present that day get emotional support and they feel better soon. Conditioner the family.

Universal vs Disney
Can someone please explain to me the appeal of Disney over Universal? If you’re not a creepy Disney adult and don’t have little girls that think they’re princesses, I truly don’t understand what the appeal is. We just got back from Epic universe and it was amazing!! We did have express passes and stayed at Helios which probably made it even better but Disney just seems so run down and sad by comparison. It seems like people just pay for the nostalgia. Am I missing something??

This is going to be tough, but it would be good for everyone to put the brakes on what happened...
Ok everyone, time to take a deep breath, step away from the phones and computers, go outside, touch grass, see the sun, play with the dog... take a break. Cause people are getting so caught up in this thing and running to silly places with it.
Here are the facts:
The investigation not only isn't done, it's going to take a while. Think weeks, not days or hours. Weeks. In the mean time no one knows what happened or why. We don't know if it was the restraint, rider error or trying to do something he shouldn't, or error on the part of the ride ops not securing them. Or even possibly more than one.
We don't know. And any pretending that they do or has some special insight is very simply wrong, as sincere as they might be. Don't care if they have whatever experience (I've got 10 years working at parks myself). They. Don't. Know. And any speculation anyone is putting out is premature, not based on any sort of actual fact finding, and based on their imagination. Don't waste the time dwelling on it until the investigation comes out with what actually happened.
And no, this isn't the end of roller coasters, theme parks, hyper coasters, B&M or any of that either. Nor are any of them any more dangerous than they were previously (which they weren't). Any panic or thoughts along those lines are overreactions, not based on reality, and a sign you need some air.
So ease off- for your mental health as well as that of others. Maybe take a break from coaster communities for a bit, because quite simply they are being flooded with the attention seekers, wannabees, overreactionaries, uniformed, ignorant, or just plain jerks at the moment. The smart ones who have a clue are the ones that are not talking, or saying to stop talking and just wait. That's the smart thing to do.

Scared to continue with this hobby I love…
We’ve all heard the tragic news, and my heart goes out to those directly affected.
There’s a deep ripple of fear going through many of us (I’m sure it’s not only me) that maybe this isn’t as safe as we’ve always believed. I’m not sure how to continue riding as happy-go-lucky as I have in the past. I know they’ve shut down the similar models of coasters, but how are some of y’all overcoming the tough thoughts when getting on other models by different manufacturers?
For example, Copperhead Strike at Carowinds is one of my top favorites. I love air time and upper body freedom, but the clamshell with slow inversions has always made me nervous despite how much I enjoy the ride. But now, shhhiiiiitttt.
(I acknowledge this is personal anxiety and do not mean this to negate any traumatic experiences lived by others. Just wondering how we’re all coping around here.)

What Does The Process Of Getting Hired At A Theme Park Look Like?
I hope it’s fine for me to ask this here, wasn’t sure if I should have asked in a space for writing or a space for theme parks this question,
I’m currently writing a short story for fun, the main character gets a job at an theme park, however I’m not sure what the process of applying, interviewing, and training looks like, and I want to make sure the story makes sense.
If able to, could someone help me?
