How to proceed here? (See description)

i screenshotted this pattern way back and there wasn’t any directions on in which sequence the parts are supposed to be but this, so I‘m a bit confused on one part of this pattern: it looks like my arch B2 is supposed to be connected to ring R2, but as far as I see it, the ring 2 isn’t even made at that point, so hard to connect there.

I’ve worked around this by just doing the ring R2 right after finishing the arch B2 and then joining the arch B3 via lock join to a picot on R2 but no idea if that is the best way.

I have two question about a part of this pattern because I really want it to work: 1. Am I doing the order of the details right or is there a more elegant solution? 2. If I do it my way, is there something else other than a lock join to connect my arch B3 to ring R2 because I use a really tiny thread and the lock join is almost the size of a double know?

English isn’t my first language so sorry if anything is awkwardly explained, conversational English only helps so much trying to explain my problem..

2026-Design-Along (DAL) - Snowflake - tatting challenge

Post image

On Discord tatting channel  we were talking about having different challenges for other arts - for example: InkTober. There was some interest for a Snowflake Design-Along - so I spent couple of days and "came up" with the most basic snowflake base for a design along tatting challenge. Probably it is in every tatting book on the planet.

Every ring is: 3x(3ds-p)-3ds

Every chain is: 1ds-p-6ds-p-6ds-p-1ds

The rules
- You can add or remove picots.
- You can add up to 3 rounds to the original motif.
- Your design must be your own. Please don't copy other participants' designs.
- Sharing a written pattern is optional. Photos alone are welcome!

By submitting a pattern to the organizer, you grant the organizer a non-exclusive, worldwide, perpetual, royalty-free license to publish, reproduce, and freely distribute your pattern, with credit to you. More of the legal disclaimer is on my website.

stiff blocking without starch

i'm working on this pattern and plan to make an earring pair, is there a way to block it firmly in place without using starch? and do i attach earring hooks before or after blocking?

side tangential but this thread (dmc 80 67) just unlock my fascination for gradient threads.

My flattered collar from 1938 is ready too

My collar was finished at summer. Million thanks to the Gail Weaver for sharing that clear pattern and video hints. I washed my collar in the nett and blocked wet. This is not perfect but I am very proud of it. I started tatting this februar and I have a big joy every time with my threads and shuttles. I tatted this collar with DMC30.

[Snowflake TAL] My first snowflake

Post image

I just finished my first snowflake today 🥳 ☺️ It’s the sample snowflake from Robin Perfetti’s book (minus some decorative picots because that's my preference).

I started tatting a month ago, and this is my largest piece so far. I learned quite a bit from tatting it, like what to check before closing a ring (are all the joins to the correct picots? Did a join trap the other shuttle in the wrong hole?) and how the folded join actually works.

Finished Collar!!

Hello friends!

I just finished my first tatted wearable! Yay!

I was wondering if anyone had any advice on how to properly block this collar so that it drapes correctly? Additionally, does anyone have any tips on how to wash this piece? I've been working on it for a few months now and it's not as white as I'd like it to be lol. I'd like to wash it but hopefully not damage anything... I also posted a picture of the type of thread I used in case that helps with types of cleaning agents I should use.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks so much!

Could this slight lifting be solved by blocking?

Post image

Per my last post here, I'm working on the monster Jan Stawasz doily and when I started working on it I didn't do the picots in the inner circle of the first row by his method, I made them in between two double stitches. But since I made a few mistakes along the second row, I decided to scrap it and redo it using his method for those loops also. But I encountered another issue, which is that the lifting is way worse on that version. So I'm a bit stumped especially since I'm not sure I can get more of this same thread (100% cotton, 50g) and will probably have to look for something similar at least. I was wondering if I should cut off the second row and redo it but I don't wanna jump head first into that and waste more thread than I already have. Do you think wet blocking would help it lay flat? Or should I start over, potentially with a different thread?

The finished set + my pattern

So this was a bit of an experiment. The thread is 6 string sanbest. I went with row 3, however, you can stop with row 2 and add as many rings in row 2 and you want. With row 2 and 3, I had to expand the size of the rings so that they connect to each still as they bend around row 1. My friend wanted purple beads, but as this was a new pattern for me, I didn't want to incorporate beads right away so I sawed them on with a mono thread and a needle.

If you have any questions, please let me know.

I'm tackling the mysterious monster doily of Jan Stawasz

I found two scans of the pattern in the comments of a reddit post about it. Although it looks really challenging and I fear I might run out of thread and not be able to replace it, I really wanted to try it out lol

The one issue I had understanding the pattern was what I now know is the "Jan Stawasz method" of making picots and with all due respect I think I'm just gonna wing it and make the picots the way I know how 😭

Here are the scans if anyone else wants to try tatting this doily. I learned about it from a youtuber named Krisjin who was talking about how gatekept this pattern is, so I wanna contribute to spreading it around in some way. Have fun if you wanna work on it!

[Snowflake TAL] flake #4

Post image

I made Robin Perfetti’s flake #4 in Lizbeth size 80 and DMC 100 to carry on my groove. I am going to have to skip flake 5 because I am traveling and don’t have my picot gauge, but I will come back to it later ❄️❄️

And i’m actually really happy with it! I think the bead details get kind of lost in the ruffles but ideally it will be used as a pitcher cover so it will fan out more. I’ve been obsessed with adding beads to tatting lately, though this project started out rough, I totally fell in love with it :)

I'd like to get started on tatting, but I'm really struggling

I've watched a lot of tutorials, yet I can never get the knots right. It's always either:

- It doesn't really form a knot.

- The knot does form, but it doesn't slide.

I also often get confused by the hand movements they make to form the knots and I don't really understand where am I going wrong.

If anyone could give me some guidance, I'd be very grateful. Thanks!

Is that even possible? I can't wrap my head around how to do it.. If possible I would like to see a video, but I can't seem to search one up..

Second tatting FO, first snowflake ever [Snowflake TAL]

I won thread chicken with my Sunlit shuttle, I almost didn't make it 😂!

Pattern is the free Handy Hands Beginner tatting pattern "Martha's Snowflake" by Kendra Goodnow. Took me a couple days to do it since I was busy with work and house chores. This pattern didn't require any split rings nor chains so I got very lucky, I'll eventually tackle patterns that use those techniques (but if I can avoid them I will 🤣!) I decided to do different sized picots for the Large Rings on the second around to make it look more fun while smaller picota for the chains and inner rings. I just need to block it and stiffen it to make it look more even and less wonky.

I'm gonna work on a different tatting project for now since my dad's friend asked for two cross bookmarks, so after that is done I'll do my next snowflake! Maybe after payday I'll order Robin Perfetti's books 🤔. Edit: Oops! I forgot to add the thread! It's Aunt Lydia's crochet thread in size 10, color White :-)!

Shuttle with Removable Bobbin

Hello! I’m a seamstress who’s seen the light of fiber arts and wants to start shuttle tatting. I’m in between places so all my sewing stuff is storage but I miss working with my hands. I’m in NYC and would love to get a shuttle with a hook and a removable bobbin. Any recommendations? I’ve heard mixed results from the Aerlit and Clover shuttles but I can be convinced!

[Snowflake TAL] First snowflake

Post image
28 Upvotes

I started tatting a week or so ago, and this is pretty much my first finished object.

I still feel really clumsy! I learned how to do split rings and this was also my first time using two shuttles. And I've just found out about mock rings... after finishing this, of course. I guess I'll have to do another one! 😁

Many thanks to u/trustmeijustgetweird who posted the link to the Elegant Snowflake pattern!

Recently re-taught myself how to tat and made this key using Be-stitched free pattern.

Its pretty wonky but im pretty happy with it overall

That feeling...

... When you squeak out the last millimeter of thread on the shuttle to complete a piece without having to start a new thread.

Proof that there's a higher power somewhere. 😆

Do I fix it or just continue to the next row

Bit confused as a beginning

Post image
21 Upvotes

How would I create the first chain in step 4 if the chain thread is still at the beginning of the first ring. I get it once you go through 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10.....

Do I carry it through the beginning of each ring to get it over?

EDIT 1. So I chose to keep the ball thread through the 3 rings by just using the method for tatting over ends then continued on and as somone pointed out when looking a bit closer at the actually work it seems there are chains in between the 1, 2, 3 rings but arnt on the graph they are tiny so probably like 2 or 3 double stitches but I'll just skip the chains its a bit tighter at the ends of the motif but its almost looks the same, I'll post the finished product soon i won't be making a full book mark just a gauge motif of sorts
