Park of the week — tell us about one you know
One state park at a time. Which one do you know well, and what should someone do on a first visit?
Worth including: the trail or spot that is actually worth the drive, when to go and when to avoid, whether the campground is worth booking, and anything that has changed recently.
Any state, any size. The small ones nobody has heard of are the most useful posts here.

What’s a state park you visited once and still think about years later?
Some state parks leave a lasting impression even when they aren’t famous for dramatic views or major attractions. It might be a quiet trail, a hidden swimming spot, an unexpected wildlife encounter, or simply the feeling of spending an entire day away from everyday life.
I’d love to hear about the state parks that hold a special place in your memory. What made that particular visit unforgettable, and would you go back if you had the chance?

What’s one state park you think more people should visit?
Some of the best outdoor places aren’t necessarily the famous national parks. State parks can have beautiful trails, quiet lakes, hidden waterfalls, and picnic spots that are just as memorable without the same crowds.
I’m curious which state parks have really stayed with you, whether because of the scenery, a great hike, wildlife you spotted, or a special memory with family or friends.
What state park would you recommend to someone visiting your state for the first time, and what makes it worth the trip? Photos and personal stories are welcome too!

What’s one state park you think more people should visit?
Some state parks deserve much more attention than they get. Beyond the popular trails and famous viewpoints, there are often quiet lakes, scenic picnic spots, hidden waterfalls, and peaceful trails waiting to be explored.
I’d love to discover places that offer beautiful scenery without the crowds you often find at more famous destinations.
What’s one state park you’ve visited that genuinely surprised you, and what made it memorable?

Little Jerusalem Badlands State Park in Kansas
Located about 30 min south of Oakley, KS, the park contains the largest exposed stretch of Niobrara Chalk in the entire state of Kansas. Its not a big park, but it definitely protects a unique and interesting bit of the local and Western geology as a result of the entire region being beneath a shallow sea (Western Interior Seaway) for 34 million years. There's just 2 short trails and a toilet at the moment, but they're finally working on a visitor center that should be open in early 2027.
It is definitely worth an hour or two if you're in the area.

Georgia- Hard Labor Creek Cottages
Does anyone know about the condition of cottages at HLC? I rode my horse to the ones located at the end of the dirt road leading away from the stables, and they were dilapidated little elf houses. The website shows beautiful 1 and 2 bedroom houses, so I’m wondering WHERE are they in relation to what I saw! less

State parks are carrying the whole country on their back right now
I don't care what anyone says. They are the only thing that keeps me sane. Paid 12 bucks to get in and walked for four hours without seeing a single strip mall. Heard acutal birds, saw a turtle, came home tired and happy. No phone service the whole time and it was the best call I never made. Anyway, just appreciate them while they're still there.

I wonder if the “gov” doesn’t touch National or State Parks because they don’t want what hunts those places hunting everywhere. So when things happen in those places they pretend to care but ultimately they usually already know what happened.

Chadron State Park - Nebraska's First State Park
Overall, the Nebraska panhandle gets slept on for its scenery. One small part of that is Chadron State Park in the Pine Ridge which shows off some of what the area has to offer. Chadron was NE's first state park and it remains one of its very best.
