When the heavens above had no name, and the earth below was not yet called by name, there was only Apsรป, the first, who fathered them, and Mummu-Tiฤmat, who bore them all, their waters mingling as one. No reed hut was woven, no marsh had risen; no god had appeared, none had a name, no destinies were fixed.
Then gods were made within them. Lahmu and Lahฤmu came forth and were named; Anลกar and Kiลกar were made, greater than they. Anu was their son, his fathers' rival, and Anu fathered in his likeness Nudimmud, who is Ea: wide of understanding, wise, mighty, far stronger than his grandfather Anลกar, without rival among his brothers.
The young gods gathered and troubled Tiฤmat; they stirred up her belly with their play. Apsรป could not quiet their clamour, and Tiฤmat kept silent, though their ways galled her. Apsรป called Mummu, his vizier, and they sat before Tiฤmat. Apsรป said: "Their ways gall me. By day I have no rest, by night no sleep. I will destroy them, and there will be silence, and we will sleep."
Tiฤmat heard and raged; she cried out to her husband, alone in her pain: "Why should we destroy what we ourselves have made? Their ways are hard, but let us bear them kindly." Mummu counselled Apsรป otherwise: "Destroy them, father, and you will rest by day and sleep by night." Apsรป was glad; his face shone at the evil he planned for his children.
The gods heard and sat in silence. But Ea, who knows all things, saw through the plan. He drew the pattern of the whole, crafted his pure spell and laid it on the waters. Sleep poured over Apsรป; Mummu was dazed. Ea loosened Apsรป's sash, took off his crown, took his radiance and wore it. He bound Apsรป and slew him, and locked Mummu away. Upon Apsรป he built his dwelling and named it Apsรป, and rested there in deep peace with Damkina his wife.
There, in the chamber of destinies, the wisest of the wise was conceived. In the heart of holy Apsรป, Marduk was born. Ea his father begot him; Damkina his mother bore him. He nursed at the breasts of goddesses; his nurse filled him with fearsome splendour.
