I said hello to Simone when I found her before work one morning in early September 2015, and said goodbye to her one year ago today. For that decade in between—from day one until the very last moment—she was just the kindest and most outwardly loving girl.

I’m so grateful for meeting her and for all those years we had together, even if they didn’t feel like enough.

Wherever you are, little one, please know that I still miss you like hell, won’t ever forget you, and will love you for all of time.

Support needed Prayers for my Louis please

My Shih Tzu, Louis is currently at the veterinary hospital to get two surgeries performed. One for a (hopefully) benign growth on his eyelid and another for a large lump that we found on his hind leg, which seems to have grown into the muscle. It’s going to be a complicated surgery and I won’t get pathology back for a couple of weeks, but I need all the prayers out there to pray that it’s not cancer. Please. He’s 13.5 years old and we love him so!!! 🙏🏻💕🐾💕🙏🏻🐾

Question subcutaneous hemangiosarcoma

Looking for advice on Yunnan Baiyao for my dog with cancer

Lobo had a tumor removed from his groin on 10/6. We proceeded with surgery because his CT scan showed the cancer was localized and hadn't spread. Radiation was initially recommended, but after his test results came back, the recommendation changed to chemotherapy.

He's still healing from surgery. he's got his pep back, and I'm starting to see his silly self again. It's giving me hope...i am struggling with not knowing when it will be time to let him go.

Quality of life > Quantity, right? ❤️‍🩹......

I've been reading about Yunnan Baiyao and wanted to hear from anyone who has used it for a dog with subcutaneous hemangiosarcoma. Did it help?

I know, I know it's not a cure.

We have his surgery follow up appointment next week, but will let them know its a no to chemo.

Two photos of Colly, now vs almost 12 years ago - she's still the same little pup in my eyes :')

This past year has been a lot, and the concept of aging has really hit home. It doesn't feel that long ago that I was 6 years old and she was just a wee puppy. Suddenly I'm 18 and she's 12 and my life keeps speeding up but she's only slowing down. Every day is different, some days she's full of energy, but more often she's spending the day sleeping or quietly keeping us company.

She has arthritis, early onset, affecting mainly her back legs. Fortunately it doesn't bother her too often, only when she gets up after a long nap or has been on a long walk. In the last 3-4 years she's developed dermatitis, we presume it's from the grass as her jackets helped the best, but now it's too hot for them. We've tried everything to manage it, medications will work for a while before she begins to become used to it, there's been times where she's gnawed until she's bleeding. Her allergies have been really bad recently, it saddens me so much because I just want her to be comfortable.

Her heart murmur that she's had for most of her life is so loud now that I can hear it just by sitting next to her when she's excited or energetic, it's like a clock counting down how much time she has left.

I'm trying my best to live in the moment and enjoy the time I have with her, but it's hard when the fact that she's quite old and may not have long left only really clicked for me this year.

Support needed Senior dog quite literally driving me mad

I just don’t know what to do anymore. My husband and I are losing our minds. Over the past two years things have progressively gotten worse and worse with my 13-15 y/o (vet is unsure on age since he was adopted) boston/min pin pup. It started with panting. The vet couldn’t find anything wrong at first. I really thought it was anxiety and we have literally tried every med under the sun for him in the past two years. Gapapentin, anti anxiety meds, trazadone. Nothing works. It progressively got worse and then the drinking and peeing started. He was diagnosed with Cushings. We’ve treated that. Nothing changed. We went back to gabapentin. Nothing changed. We took him to a new vet for another opinion on if anything was hurting him. We pulled some teeth that were lose. Nothing changed. We went back on the trazadone. Nothing changed. He goes through phases where he pants and paces all day for weeks, has a normal few days and is always excited when we get home, and the cycle starts all over again. I’ve tried CBD, sleeping aids, a thunder vest, holding him, and petting him, and EVERYTHING. My husband isn’t getting sleep. He is so exhausted because our dog will pant and pace and claw at him through the night. We can’t crate him because he’s literally chewed out and hurt himself in the past. He also has separation anxiety that developed the past few years we’ve tried treating that is just persistent through any attempts to alleviate so we can’t keep him out of our room without him barking and clawing at the door. He has started nipping when we try and get him on the bed. He won’t use puppy pads anymore and he pulls off belly bands but I can clean the incontinence issues that’s not the problem and I know that’s to be expected. I’m newly pregnant and him panting and pacing is truly making me so stressed. I don’t know what to do at this point. I feel like we’re out of options and just holding on for the rare glimpses. Everyone on here seems to have so much patience and care and I feel so awful for being so annoyed by him but I think I’m at my breaking point.

Support needed Struggling to make the end of life appointment

I have a lab that just turned 15 2 weeks ago. I’v been aware of his decline for about a months losing weight, unable to get up, accidents in the house overnight, sleeping most of the time, decline in appetite. I had a vet come out Monday and they confirmed he has a large mass that most likely is cancer and basically to make the appointment as it’s not likely to improve. This week my dog has started eating more and showing more interest in everything around him.

He cannot get up on his own, mostly sleeps, doesn’t play or wag his tail but enjoys being near where we are.

Today I let him out and followed him since it’s a windy day and wanted to make sure he didn’t blow over and need my help. I noticed his urine is very dark brown/red tinted. I’m not sure how long it’s been this way or if it only started today.

I am so sad. I know it’s time. I’m 100% being selfish. I cannot bring myself to make this appointment. It’s literally gutting me and I’m in denial hoping for a miracle that isn’t coming.

Someone please help me move forward with this. I truly love this dog with everything I am. I have never had to make this decision before for my pet. He is my first. And I just have loved him for every day I’ve had him and don’t want to start the ones without yet.

Experience with pet siblings while putting one down

We have scheduled an in home euthanasia for my one 14 1/2 year old Chihuahua mix.

His heart disease and kidney disease are too much for him to cope with.

After posting on here before and talking to our vet, we made the decision to let him go in a few days.

He has a brother from the same litter who is very healthy. They have not been apart for more than 1 day their entire lives.

We plan to have his brother with us during the whole process but I just worry for his brother and how this will affect him after.

Can anyone share their experiences with their dogs who had to go through the loss of their sibling?

Thank you 🤍🤍

Seizure in 12 1/2 y/o?

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

Has anyone experienced a very random focal seizure in their senior French bulldog? 2 weeks ago our dog had a focal seizure out of nowhere, has never happened before. His neuro exam and blood work were all normal after except one blood leave that typically rises with seizures (I forget what it’s called). We’ve started him on Keppra 2x per day. After some consideration and talking with our vet, we decided against an MRI due to the fact that the treatment would be the same no matter what the result (brain tumor or not). Looking for some insight on anyone who has maybe experienced this as well. So scary and so sad - I know they don’t live forever. I’d love to hear from others who have maybe experienced something similar? I worry that he’s going to suffer or maybe is, and I’m really struggling.

Support needed Senior Stray Dog Jabo Is Recovering After Major Hernia Surgery! Please Help With His Follow-Up Care.

Thumbnail

Jabo is a senior stray dog who was diagnosed with a perineal hernia. With the help and support I received from kind people, Jabo was finally able to undergo the surgery he desperately needed on October 14.

After his surgery, Jabo needed to remain confined at the veterinary clinic for monitoring and recovery. Today, the vet informed me that he is recovering well and has already started eating, so he was finally cleared for discharge!

Veterinary Expenses Paid:

  • Down payment on October 14: $323
  • Remaining balance upon discharge: $503
  • Total paid to the veterinary clinic: $828

Please note that I also purchased some additional items for Jabo's recovery. One of his medications, a laxative, was purchased at a human pharmacy (Photo 7). I also bought him a muzzle and an e-collar (Photo 8), as well as dog food (Photo 9).

Sweet Jabo still needs your help!

Jabo underwent major surgery. His internal organs, including his intestines, pancreas, and bladder, had shifted into his perineal area and needed to be repositioned to where they belong.

He now has surgical wounds on his lower abdomen and on both sides of his bottom. Although he has been discharged, his recovery journey is far from over.

Jabo still needs follow-up checkups and 10 sessions of laser therapy, which cost $16 per session (he had the first session today, the second one will be on Oct. 19 (please see photo 10)). He may also need additional medications depending on his recovery.

Jabo has made it this far, and I am so grateful to everyone who helped make his surgery possible. Now, we need your help to ensure he recovers properly and to reduce the risk of complications that could require another surgery.

Any amount you can spare will be a big help in Jabo's recovery to help give this sweet senior dog a chance to live a more comfortable and pain-free life. Thank you so much.

My 15 yo chi mix has tumors on her mammary glands. One of them has tripled in size… overnight?

I got home from work and noticed it immediately. Going to the vet tomorrow morning.

We’ve had a biopsy done in the past which came back “unclear.”

We did two echocardiograms and the vet decided anesthesia is too risky because of her enlarged heart and ACVIM stage B2.

She’s extremely energetic, fun loving, and has a great appetite. So we decided to “ignore” the tumors with the vet’s recommendation.

The tumors have been slowly growing through out the past few months but one of them almost tripled in size overnight.

Naturally, I am freaking out and thinking the worst. I hope she doesn’t get too stressed out tomorrow because she hates going to the vet.

Anyway, just wanted to share this while I’m awake and can’t sleep.

I apologize ahead of time if my grammar was bad. English was not my first language.

Putting my dog to sleep....is it time?

My dog is15. She physically seems pretty well but has been cognitively deteriorating for the last 2 yrs. She is totally deaf & somewhat blind. She sleeps most of the day but still loves going for a decent walk in the afternoon & can still run around.

She gets confused at times & is very anxious. She wants to eat all the time now & is waking me up at all hours of the night

One of my biggest concerns is that we are coming into storm season where I live & she is terrified of thunder. This has gotten worse with the loss of some of her senses. Even tho she is deaf she can definitely sense/feel the thunder & she shakes in fear for hours.

I've tried the anxiety reducing coats etc, nothing works. I don't necessarily want to start sedating her every time there is a storm. I feel really bad about her enduring another storm sesson which can go for 3 mths with thunder a few times a week.

I feel as tho she probably won't be with us for more than about another year at most & wonder if putting her to rest before the thunder comes is the right thing to do.

Support needed Guidance

Post image
34 Upvotes

Looking for some guidance or advice from fellow pet owners. When did you know it was the right time to euthanize your animal?

Ours is 12/13 years old, with hip dysplasia, and having a difficult time getting around. She’s struggling to get up after laying down long term and going up the stairs to get back in the house. But she also has moments of running (very slowly) in the yard and being playful outside. This is such a hard choice for me to make because she isn’t “sick” , I just don’t want to make the wrong choice.

Senior working breeds

Post image

How do you all care for your senior working breed dogs? This is Radish and she has always needed a lot of exercise and mental work to be fulfilled and chill (and I love that about her.) She's abruptly lost a lot of ability and stamina so walks have gone from 5 mile hikes to quarter mile strolls, but she's still her same old self in many ways. I keep trying to give her gentle activities that will give her some mental engagement without stressing her body out but she goes right over threshold into overstimulation (barking, whale-eyed, trying to herd things that should not be herded). She has always needed a good walk beforehand to peacefully enjoy things like people-watching at a cafe, visiting a friend, or doing low-energy scent work. How do I give her quality of life without sending her into overstimulated mania whenever anything vaguely exciting happens?
