It’s been a month and I’m still thinking about this everyday and I find that I just need to write about it to people that may understand how profound this moment was for me
To set the scene, I saw PL for the first time when I was 19 years old at Lightning in a Bottle (back in 2011 when it was a tiny old person hippie fest of like 3K and not the behemoth of a fest it is now). A friend and I decided to send it solely because we had planned to go to Coachella for the first time that year but it soldout and LIB seemed like an interesting alternative. I was a little naive girl from Orange County and I had no idea this world even existed and it absolutely blew my mind and I never went back.
Unfortunately that era of my life also came with a lot of rocky territory and within a couple years I began fighting what would become a long uphill battle with alcohol, my physical and mental health. I was even diagnosed with pre-diabetes and my sleep got to bad they thought I might have narcolepsy and I was put on stimulants to keep me functional during the day.
2.5 years ago, I finally woke up and said this ends today and it did. I spent the whole first year in emotional turmoil and confusion about who I was, what I liked, whether or not I was still fun but I never once doubted that it was the right choice for me and I trusted there was something better on the other side of it. As I dug deep in therapies, I quickly realized I’d need somewhere else to channel my energy and for my anniversary celebration of quitting drinking, I signed up for a half Ironman. Which I’ve now done two years in a row.
PL sets pretty much fully get me through that training. I’ll put on a 2-3 hour set and just RUN and BIKE for miles on end to clear my head. But there was one other song I would play at the beginning of my runs, especially on the hardest days that I really didn’t want to train. Its called Need to Move by Captain Planet. I shared this story with my ride or die bestie (we share one brain cell and we charge it by dancing to Pretty Lights together) and it quickly became our soulmate jam. Sad? Need to Move. Tired? Need to Move. Happy? Need to Move. Often times we pair it with wearing banana costumes and doing epic outdoor movement like snowboarding, mountain biking, hiking and even paddle boarding. Some would say we’re insane, but we think it’s just right. So of course we put it in the request line because what the hell who knows 🤷♀️
Fast forward to Yahn Dawn, me and my soul brother (yes we are women, yes shes my brother, no I don’t have to explain) are sitting the car watching the lightning storm wondering what the heck we just got ourselves into but we’re the type of people that could have fun together sitting in a parking lot with nothing but a rubber band and a jar of peanut butter so we knew we’d still be in for an epic night. We got out of the car to go pee and to our delight the gates were opening and there were maybe only 20 other people in line.
**CUE DOUBLE RAINBOW IYKYK**
We proceed to go into the venue and walk straight up to the rail, a place I frequented in my early 20s but had since abandoned due to preference for dancing room. We knew we had to stay. The night was joyous, our dancefloor neighbors were amazing, our sparkly jumpsuits were reflecting the pretty lights in every direction and the night was perfect (I danced 56,000 steps this day for reference). Watching the clock and feeling the sadness of the night coming to an end as I rocked out to Up & Down I go, I thanked dog in heaven for an epic night 1 and counted my blessings for the next 2 ahead.
BUT WAIT? WHATS THAT?? “I breathe in deep, my feet are free, the space, the sound, the bass, the key, you have to choose to shake it loose to break the walls you NEED TO MOVE”
Y’all the face i turned around and made to brother is one I will never be able to make again. Idk how to explain it but you might be the only people in the world that understand the pure maniacal, unhinged joy of having your favorite artist play your song request.
And not just ANY song. The song that single handedly carried me through year 2 of quitting alcohol. The song that makes me feel authentically connected to the version of myself I love best. The song that makes me a brother lose ourselves in the celebration of friendship. I cannot overstate how this is somehow the most in the right place at the right time I have ever felt.
I am so grateful for this music. For this project. For the ups and downs it has been through and the way it has carried me through my own peaks and valleys. It is such a privilege to witness this band in their prime while also living life at mine. Thank you PLFam for always making me feel at home, for giving me space to find myself, to be myself, to build my confidence back up after a traumatic time. I can’t explain it but no other music does this for me in the way PL does. Thank you for reading, nobody else in my life quite understands how insane this little life high five was. Being alive is seriously magic yall and I can’t wait to keep stepping into my power. Never give up friends, whatever battle of your own you may be fighting, there is light on the other side. Do hard things. Be yourself. Celebrate the little wins. And always remember, you are not alone!
TLDR; Derpy Orange County teen finds PL in 2011, it changes her life and then 15 years later and after a shitty battle with substance abuse, Pretty Lights swirls her bestie soulmate sobriety song at Yahn Dawn and she will never be the same. Wants it to serve as a reminder to others that there is still magic left in this world, no matter how dark the times may seem. Music heals. Connection is the opposite of addiction. There is power in authenticity.
Thank you for coming to my TED talk, see yall in Oakland 🌀

We just released our flip of “Hot Like Sauce” and Nelly’s “Hot in Herre.” Had a lot of fun bringing these two together—hope the PL fam enjoys it.

Downsizing a bit before a move & wanted to see if any fam would be interested in this. Got it from Ill Art Collective a couple years back, neat piece of artwork.
Give me like 10 bucks to ship it to you in a poster tube and it’s yours. Message if interested!

But where is the right/proper place to try and link up with people to sell tix for less than what I bought them for? The ticket thread in this group seems to be dead.
I’m holding three NOLA tickets (one for Friday and two for Saturday) that I just can’t swing using with a newborn at home. Please point me in the right direction before deleting this post if it’s not allowed here.

The boys have been hella electronic this tour. I was at Cap, but didn’t huff on dem baloonz. Some of Cap reminded me of the elements renegade.
Derek said he wasn’t a dj at last Yahn Dawn, but these last few sets have felt so electronic and dj to me. Compared to the comeback run the last few years the sets seem to be bringing the heat. A little less jammy and a little more bass?
Frequently ending with the Griz and Tape B remix is such a great example of the subtle ways Derek has been leaning back towards the bass.
Alright, unleash on my opinion in the comments.

Hi Fam🌟
I don’t expect anyone here to donate but was hoping anyone who has the capacity could spread the word. Maybe post on instagram or Facebook or send to family/friends. I’ll attach the link here. Thank you for your time reading this 💜
I know this isn’t EDM related but wanted to reach out to the community to help spread the word about my baby boy. Thiccums has been battling a rare blood infection called Mycoplasma for over a month now. Despite all efforts thiccums has regressed significantly and now needs an internal medicine consult and bone marrow biopsies and a ton of other things. In an effort to be able to afford this care my partner and I created a GoFundMe for him.
