Question How are we Oakvillians going to avoid splitting the vote and ending up with the same old (and I mean old)Mayor?

That's it. That's my question. It worries me that with 3 other viable candidates the "oust Burton" vote will be split, he will win again, and nothing will change.

Housing Rental scam

Hi everyone, I’m looking for some advice because I’m starting to worry that I may have been scammed.
I recently viewed a basement at Sandpiper Rd in Oakville. I signed a lease and paid the last month’s rent deposit to the person who presented himself as the landlord, “Rashad Jawaid.”
Since then, he has stopped responding to my messages and isn’t picking up my calls. The last time I heard from him, he said he had the stomach flu. I’ve also asked him to send me updated pictures of the basement, but he hasn’t sent anything.
My move-in date is supposed to be November 1st. Because I was getting worried, I went back to the property to check for myself. A different person answered the door and told me that he doesn’t know anyone named Rashad Jawaid and seemed unaware that the basement had been rented to me.
Now I’m really concerned because I have already signed the lease, paid the deposit, and need to leave my current tenancy. A friend of mine who works in real estate told me that because I signed a lease, I shouldn’t immediately look for another place, but at this point I’m scared I might end up with nowhere to move on November 1st.
Has anyone dealt with something similar in Ontario/Oakville? What should I do next? Is there a way I can verify whether the person who rented the basement to me actually owns the property or had the authority to rent it out?
Any advice would be really appreciated.

Rant My experience with Telmax in Oakville: 10+ hour internet outage and unresolved property damage

For anyone in Oakville considering switching to Telmax, I wanted to share my experience so far.

Internet outage and lack of communication

My internet went down at around 10:15 AM on October 19. I called Telmax technical support and was told there was an outage in my area. They said they were working on it but had no ETA for when service would be restored.

I've called at least four more times throughout the day, and every time I've gotten the same answer: no ETA. As of late evening, it's been over 10 hours without internet.

Getting through to technical support has also been frustrating. Every call involves a long wait on hold. Their automated system offers a callback option, but it has never worked for me, so I've had to sit on the phone waiting for someone to pick up.

What's even more frustrating is the lack of communication and transparency. I received no text message or notification about the outage. There's no outage status page that I could find on their website, and no public updates about the ongoing issue. When I asked how I could check for updates, I was told my only options were to call or use online chat.

So unless you contact them yourself, you wouldn't even know there's a confirmed outage in your area. Looking at their website, you'd think everything was running normally.

I work from home and depend on a reliable internet connection. I've had to rely on my phone's hotspot, which has been slow, and losing internet for more than 10 hours has seriously disrupted my workday.

Unresolved property damage from fibre installation

Unfortunately, this isn't my first issue with Telmax.

During the fibre installation along our street, Telmax's contractor, Aecon, damaged my sprinkler system. I contacted Telmax customer service, opened a ticket, and followed up multiple times by phone and email.

Every time, I was told someone would follow up or look into it. But nothing has actually happened, and nobody has come to fix the damage.

Winter is approaching, and I'll need to have my sprinkler system winterized soon. At this point, I don't expect the damage to be repaired before winter.

I understand that internet outages happen, and I don't expect every issue to be resolved immediately. But I do expect reasonable communication, some transparency about ongoing outages, and actual follow-through when a company promises to address a problem.

Telmax has been expanding its fibre network in Oakville, and I know some people are considering switching. I'm not telling anyone what to do, but I think it's worth knowing what the customer service experience can look like when things go wrong.

Has anyone else in Oakville been affected by the outage or had similar experiences with Telmax?

Hiring/For Hire Pizzaville in Oakville, ON has filed a LMIA to hire a foreign worker as they claim they are unable to find a Canadian or PR to work as a Restaurant Assistant Manager for $37.00 per hour despite no experience being required.

The duties are not listed but it states that only a secondary school diploma is required. No experience is required.

The offered wage is 8 cents above the $36.92 median wage needed to file under the High-Wage Stream of the TFW Program. If they offered below this wage the LMIA would be automatically closed due to the high unemployment in Oakville.

The location is 2163 Sixth Line, Oakville, ON L6H 1M8

Question Q&A at St. Aiden's - thoughts

I was at yesterday’s event. What struck me wasn’t a dramatic disagreement but the difference in style between O’Meara and Knoll, and how collegial they were with each other. I also noticed Burton frequently framing accomplishments as ‘I did…,’ while Knoll made a point of crediting council collectively. Curious whether others in the room noticed the same thing.

Question Cyclists: Help Me Research Bike-Chain Maintenance

Hey everyone! I'm a student in Oakville researching bicycle chain maintenance for a DECA EIB project, if anyone has heard of it.

I recently started cycling, but I enjoy it and wanna do an Ironman in the future, so I wanted to do my project on it. I'm looking to hear from cyclists about how they clean and lubricate their chains, what methods they use, and any frustrations/problems they experience.

I'd really appreciate it if you could take my short survey (around 2–3 minutes).

Survey: https://forms.gle/JQb31utZTSKzYfD39

I'm also hoping to potentially speak with 12–15 cyclists just by email. If you're interested, you can indicate that at the end of the form.

If you have any ideas or improvements to the form, please let me know.

Thanks for helping out!

History Old Sports Sponsor names

I was thinking this morning of when I played soccer many moons ago - and the names of the local companies that sponsored them.

For me, names like Oakville Spee-Dee Print, Centrifugal Coaters, and Treats were across my chest. The hated villains were always Bronte Food City for some reason (they were too good!).

Does anyone else remember their childhood team sponsor names?

32F looking to make new girlfriends in and around Oakville!
Would love to find a group of girls to grab coffee or matcha with, go to the gym, vent about life, try new places, and just do girl stuff together.

If there’s already a group that’s active and welcoming, I’d love to join! Otherwise, I feel like so many of us are in the same boat, so I’d be happy to start a WhatsApp group and get the ball rolling.

Girls who are genuinely looking to make friends and build real connections, DM!

r/Oakville Have you been to the pools at the new Sixteen Mile Creek Sports Complex?

Edit to add: you are all a bunch of assholes.

Maybe just comment if you have experienced the change rooms at the new community and recreation centre.

I was really underwhelmed by the pools, but mostly disappointed and sort of surprised at the “Universal Change Rooms”.

There is a sheet of glass separating the entrance and access hallway from the change rooms. This is hard to visualize because I have never seen anything like it, but imagine being in a huge change room with lockers and change stalls and you can see through to the hallway on one side and to the pools on the other.

And it’s for an all genders and sexes. And what’s more, there are TWO of these change rooms which join up. It’s gotta be at least 2,500 square feet of change room that you can look into.

Yes, I concede there are a good number of private stalls with doors that lock and high concrete walls that are very clean and roomy and are most convenient to change in. I acknowledge that there are family sized stalls too (also good), and furthermore, there are accessible stalls which can accommodate a disabled person and their caregiver.

But holy s%*t, picture this:

You get out of the pool, you want to wash your hair, rinse off the chlorine and get dressed…preferably in private and in my case, preferably with persons of the same gender (F 54). But, all you can do is access one of the eight showers with (very nice and hot) water that are located ON the pool deck, and NOT in the change rooms in individual stalls with (what should be) locking doors.

Who thought of this? Yes, I understand the facility does not want people loitering in change rooms after a swim and taking forever to clean up and groom, but this is craziness. Was there a focus group that consisted of the Town, the architectural design team, and, you know, a cross section of the public.

Okay, I hear you. You’re saying there are gender specific change rooms that can be accessed across from reception with locking shower stalls. Cool, cool. But then you have to make the walk of shame in your BATHING SUIT twice and in one direction you will be drenched with pool water and dripping everywhere as you walk by everyone in the lobby.

I’m a pretty progressive person, but this is cuckoo.

Employees of the facility, people who have actually BEEN THERE, design team, Town executives, what say you?

(Also told the Trafalgar pool has a similar set up).

Question Halloween

Hi everyone! My wife and I were discussing Halloween earlier and we thought this subreddit would be a good place to get a general consensus. We live in a newer subdivision in north east Oakville and last year barely had any trick or treaters but this year the new Harvest Oak public school is open and the subdivision seems to be filling in. We’re trying to get an idea of how many kids to prepare and if people are even planning on coming through the neighborhood. We look forward to seeing everyone! Thanks in advance

Rant Ai in municipal election campaigns…

Honestly, really concerned about how much AI is used in these municipal election platforms by the candidates. I’m not saying all, but there are some who heavily use it and it’s extremely obvious.

I’m in ward 7 and there are certain candidate(s) who have AI campaign artwork and I find it hilarious as one of the major points of the election is the data center.

Rant Extreme horrible experience at Macdonald 2290 lakeshore west oakville

I placed a mobile order that included a Happy Meal and several other items, $50 in total. When my order was handed to me, I specifically asked the manager whether everything was included. He confirmed that it was. Then two other employees handed me 2 bottle of water when I was about to leave.

Upon returning home, I discovered that my Happy Meal was also missing. I called the restaurant, and the same manager told me that my only option was to return to the restaurant. I did so to collect the missing item.

While an employee was retrieving my Happy Meal, the manager approached me and abruptly questioned when I had placed my order. I attempted to retrieve the relevant information on my phone, but he told me not to use my phone and to simply answer him. When I questioned his manner of speaking to me, he began yelling, accused me of being rude, pointed his finger at me, and ordered me to leave the restaurant in an intimidating manner. I stand up against him by telling him I am not leaving because I did nothing wrong and we both called police.

I found this treatment unacceptable. I had paid for my order, had confirmed with the manager that it was complete, and had returned solely because an item was missing. I was attempting to resolve a straightforward customer-service issue and did not expect to be treated this way.

I eventually received my missing Happy Meal upon police presence. However, receiving the food does not resolve my concerns about the manager's conduct.

I am an Eastern Asian female with a tiny figure and this man (who has a southern Asian appearance and accent) treated me like I am a child, when I asked him not to tell me what to do, I.e. tell him the order time, don’t check my phone, don’t ask him questions, pick up my phone from the counter and get out of the restaurant, he gets more aggressive and angrier. He even said he doesn’t understand my English, there is nothing wrong with my English.

I am not sorry if I challenged some man ego here, and I am not afraid of you!!

Rant What is wrong with our hospitals?

Sorry for this very much over done topic, but genuinely what is wrong with our hospitals? Is it just OTMH or is it all provincial hospitals?

I have not once heard of a friend, family member, or colleague have a hospital experience where they received proper, timely and respectful care.

Every incident I hear about pertains to how the hospital runs like a zoo, the wait times are chaotic despite how serious your condition is, the staff is highly unprofessional and dismissive of patients, etc. If anyone cares to read, I have two completely insane experiences that I have witnessed first hand at this hospital that made me lose total trust and respect for this facility:

1- a woman entered the emergency department with a very serious allergic reaction to seafood. She was unable to breathe, choking, losing colour in her face. I was looking at the nurse in triage as they were the closest nurse nearby to flag him down and he looked directly at the patient, looked back at his computer screen, typed some notes on their computer (I’m assuming for the previous patient), checked his phone, sipped some coffee and nonchalantly resumed typing on his computer. The woman with the severe allergy was not addressed for several minutes despite being in a very dangerous state.

2- code blue was called over the intercom for a man who was on the way to the hospital via ambulance. A second code blue was called moments after his arrival. I could overhear one of the nurses laughing in the hallway and expressing that he had already died. Yes. She was full on laughing/ giggling.

I, along with many others, can list various horrible stories as the ones I have mentioned above. It makes me so incredibly worried for our health care system and whether or not my family, friends, colleagues or myself will receive appropriate care in time if something severe occurs. I apologize for the rant. I feel so hopeless after witnessing these incidents and knowing nothing will change.
