I'm assuming this is taken from the vantage of the dunes, looking back towards the sound. I can't be sure though. Someone with more local history probably knows better.

● For Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands, prepare for the possibility of being stranded for multiple days. This could be life threatening if you have an emergency
● Becoming more likely that this will be a long-duration event
● Prepare for disruptions to ferries by Saturday evening and lasting into at least part of next week

If you need to get home by Sunday? Better leave today.

Last warm and bright day for a bit, we’re taking advantage!
My wife and I booked a house in Avon. Give NC12's recent flooding, should we expect delays/closures from this latest storm? How are the dunes holding up?
Thanks, folks. That's what I was afraid of. I will wait with bated breath and see what happens.

I'm specifically looking for an iced black tea, not a sweet tea. Anyone know where I can get a good one near Nags Head? Thanks!

Hello! We are seriously considering buying a small house (3 bed/2 bath) in Avon. We spend about 2-3 weeks a year on Hatteras, but only in the shoulder and off seasons. We would probably spend more if we owned. So, we would be looking to rent during the high season and into the shoulder seasons (May, September and October), with a few weeks we would keep for ourselves in May and October.
My biggest concerns are probably the typical ones:
(1) Can we make enough in rental income to significantly offset the price of the house and the repairs/maintenance we know we’ll have to cover;
(2) Are prices inflated after COVID? Will they come down in a few years?; and
(3) With a good rental management company, how tough is it being an Owner for a short-term rental? Is it mostly hands-free, as long as you pay your management fee?
Any input, guidance, warnings, encouragement is welcome!
And, if anyone knows a good realtor for the area, I would appreciate the referral!

My fiancé and I are thinking about getting married at the Sanderling in May 2028. I would love to hear from people who have had events at the resort. Greatly appreciate any all feedback!

Very sad to see they closed. When it was Tommy's it was a family favorite for decades.

Has anyone ever experienced a mosquito season this bad on Hatteras? We’re in Avon, and we can’t leave our house to walk our dog without getting swarmed. I can’t remember an October this bad in a while. What are folks using for mosquito control? Has anyone tried a Biogents trap?

Cooler and windy, so you would think they were done. Some lady behind Cahoons was getting chased off the dunes today. Pay attention, people!

Hi - anyone know if the sea lice/baby jelly stings can leave a scar? I had a pretty classic experience with them - stinging rashy spot after coming out of the ocean (didn’t know what it was - classic tourist, so I washed it off with fresh water which likely made it worse). Very very itchy for over a week but so proud I didn’t scratch the crap out of it…. But read patches remain. Went to a dermatologist and they tried steroid cream and an antibiotic cream neither of which made it disappear. Not itchy anymore but clear red patch. Anyone else? Commiserating is welcome! But my main goal is to finally be rid of this red patch ( it’s right in the middle of my sternum). Thanks

I’m planning a two week trip to the Outer Banks, but honestly, the rental horror stories online have me a little worried. Houses that look nothing like the photos, maintenance issues that never get fixed, last-minute cancellations… We are spending fair amount on two weeks, so i had really like to avoid that kind of experience.
For those who have stayed in OBX rentals for longer trips, what should I look for when choosing a rental company? Are there any Outer Banks property management companies you have had consistently good experiences with, and what red flags should I watch out for before booking?

Hi - the auto ferry from the mainland to Ocracoke was closed Sept 25 due to the storm. Does anyone remember the first day they reopened and were taking people to Ocracoke? When they did open was there a long wait of people trying to get to the island? I know. Odd question. Trying to figure out a series of events.

Came down for the weekend to our place in Avon, had time to make it to the beach when it wasn’t raining. The beach by our house normally has a very large sand space between the dunes and the water. It was remarkably smaller today; the Nor Easter really packed a punch. Not sure if this is a permanent or temporary thing.

Hey all, I have my guitar but forgot picks. No music stores on the island. If anyone has a couple they can borrow me, I ordered some from Amazon and can pay you back Thursday. Or if you know somewhere that sells them without going up island to Nags Head can you let me know?
Thanks!

We were on Currituck beach, I think that’s the name of beach directly across road from Whalehead. We saw a group of killer whales migrating and I think they were having a freezing frenzy too. Really cool to see. Been coming to OBX 18 yr, 1st time seeing live whales off shore.

Been stuck here for 22 days! Any help appreciated. Kinnakeet Shores
Got a brand new mazda 3, or a 2003 Durango to take. Gas prices make me want to risk taking the mazda, flood concerns make me want to take the Durango.
What should I do, coming from the people who live there? I will say, I was down in September when the big rain came and 12 had a lot of water in the edge lanes that even trucks/durangos were swimming in, but the middle lanes seemed to not have much standing on them.
