Asking a Question? Read this first!

Important!

Please provide some key information when asking a question.

1) What technology are you on (FTTP, FTTN, FTTC, FTTB, HFC, FW)

2) What is your service class (1 to 34). Check here https://www.aussiebroadband.com.au/network/connection-insights/

3) How are you connected to your modem / router? WiFi or Ethernet. You should test with your device on Ethernet. If your connection is poor on WiFi but good on Ethernet, then it's a WiFi issue, not an NBN issue.

4) Who is your provider (e.g. Telstra, Optus, TPG, Aussie Broadband, etc)

5) What brand and model is your modem / router? If you're not sure, take a picture of it and upload it to imgur or similar (don't upload it as part of your post)

6) Describe your problem, and what steps you have tried.

Check NBN availability

If you're NOT on FTTP, you may be eligible for an upgrade to the far superior FTTP.

Check Service Class

Aussie Broadband provide a great tool to determine your service class and technology type, and what that means:

General Tips

You almost certainly don't need the fastest internet plan. Generally start with a slower plan, and if you are happy, then all good. If you are finding it slow you can always upgrade. You should also check if it's your internet (NBN) or internal network (e.g. WiFi) that is slow. A faster plan might not help if you internal network is the problem.

Beware of plans with very slow (5 or 10mbit) upload speeds. These are legacy plans left over from the old HFC/Cable days. If you do have one of these legacy plans, you should think about upgrading.

WiFi (Don't use it if you care about speed!)

WiFi is subject to interference from all kinds of sources. It slows down through walls, congestion from neighbours, etc will slow it down, and can cause issues. It's also a shared medium, which means that all your devices share the bandwidth, so lots of devices operating at once means slower speeds for devices.

Where practical use Ethernet to connect devices. Ethernet is more reliable and lower latency. While some WiFi claims to be faster than Ethernet, that is the cumulative total, not the rate to a single device. Even the latest WiFi6 is only approaching Ethernet speed, and that is only when there is no other traffic on the wireless spectrum - including Bluetooth and your Microwave!

There are some cases where WiFi is better (e.g. TV's with 100Mbps ports that you want to stream very high bit rate to from local sources), but almost always Ethernet is better if available. The down side is it's not always possible to run Ethernet (e.g. rentals), and not every devices has Ethernet ports (e.g. phones, tablets).

Mesh Networks

If your WiFi isn't fast enough, consider getting a mesh network. This provides multiple access points (typically 3) so you can get better coverage. If practical connect each mesh point via Ethernet (wired backhaul). Ethernet backhaul has the same advantages as connected devices by ethernet.

WiFi Frequencies

WiFi can be on 2.4GHz, 5GHz or 6GHz. Most devices work on 2.4GHz. Lots also work on 5GHz as well. The newest ones use 6GHz in addition to 2.4 and 5GHz.

2.4GHz has the best range, but lowest speed, and the most congested.

5GHz is shorter range, and has a higher speed because there's less congestion due to the shorter range

6GHz is extremely short range (it does not penetrate walls well) but it is designed to work in parallel with the 5GHz signal to provide the fastest speeds possible.

When buying a new wireless device, you should look for one branded 'WiFi 6'(802.11ax) or the newest standard, 'WiFi 7'(802.11be). The previous standard was called '802.11ac' or WiFi 5. These are usually cheaper, but in most situations are perfectly capable.

Pinned PSA: Thinking about changing ISPs for a better deal? Here's what THEY are paying

I keep seeing a bunch of posts about people churning to save money. Here's the wholesale ex-tax price that your ISP is paying to connect to the NBN network. This is NOT including IP traffic, APNIC fees, backhaul, staff, support, infrastructure like routers and switches, and space in a Data centre.

https://www.nbnco.com.au/corporate-information/media-centre/media-statements/Wholesale-Price-Changes-from-1-July-

Link to full pricelist: https://www.nbnco.com.au/content/dam/nbn/documents/sell/sau/FY27-Tariff-List-v1.0%E2%80%93010526.pdf.coredownload.pdf

Here's the planned price increases, too: (Updated 2026-09-20)

https://www.nbnco.com.au/content/dam/nbn/documents/sell/sau/FY27-FY29-Pricing-Roadmap-v1.0%E2%80%93010526.pdf.coredownload.pdf

If you look at that, you'll see that you're paying, on average, $20 for your ISP to provide everything APART from the connection to your place. Support, Internet, Routing, Redundancy, infrastructure, etc.

Don't churn to an ISP that is losing money. You'll never end up happy, or you'll just be churning again in a few months time.

Yes, I am a NBN provider. No I'm not telling you which one.

best way to boost wifi with modem downstairs?

currently with aussie broadband. we have our nbn box and our modem downstairs currently and while it is fine where it is for like general tasks, gaming wise it would be nice to have some faster speeds. we don’t have any ethernet plugs upstairs and it wouldn’t be ideal to be running a cord upstairs to each bedrooms. what would be a simple, wireless way to boost our wifi speeds? if i could plug into something with a ethernet cable it would be great but honestly we just need something 😭

Discussion TPG Cancellation annoyance.

So I want to canx a service I no longer need, and want to avoid the usual retention sales pitch.

Me :"Hi, I n longer need my internet service, so request that you cancel the service as of tomorrow, and send a shipping label so thatI can return the modem please"

Them : "May I know the reason for the cancellation?"

Me : "Sorry but no, I am not going to explain to you why I want to cancel"

Them : "Sir, I cannot proceed with your cancellation without a reason"

Eventually get a supervisor on the line who confirms that I want to cancel and repeats that they cannot proceed without a reason in their system.

I repeat that under Australian law, simply identifying myself and instructing them to cancel is enough, and that I do not need to explain why I no longer want the service.

Eventually supervisor "Sir I must put a reason into the computer. May I put the reason as *You no longer require the TPG Internet*?"

Facepalm moment ensues.

As above. We're looking to change our provider from Aussie Broadband. We have a bit of choice paralysis with nine providers to look at. We would appreciate any advice given.

ISP says I need a "private NBN technician" - suggestions? (Perth)

Brand new account with Superloop, in an NBN FTTB building that also has TPG FTTB. No idea whether the previous owners used NBN or TPG (if anything). In a wardrobe, there's an incoming CAT5(ish) cable punched down to a 4-row, 6-column block of RJ45 ports, with two pins per port and each pair from the incoming CAT5 cable connecting to all ports on a given row (i.e. blue pair on row 1, green row 2, etc).

Superloop says the account is activated and ready to go, but plugging the router into a port in the top row I get no DSL sync (previous owners had everything patched to that row), and am trying each row in turn now, just in case there's something weird about the setup like TPG on one pair and NBN on a different pair.

Speaking to SL, they say I need "the building's private technician" (who does not exist) to fix it, as "maybe your wires are old and rusty" (direct quote!). According to them, NBN says it's working fine up to the point of the MDF and everything after that is not their problem, but the building manager reports regular visits from techs organised between new residents and their ISP who need to go into the comms room.

Do I really need to pay someone (any suggestions in Perth welcome if so!) to come out and patch this on the MDF? Superloop have given (via NBN, I assume) some details with a C and X pair reference so I assume a comms tech could do it, but am I wrong to assume the ISP normally arranges this?

I've never set up an NBN connection before (previously a DIY wireless link), so I'm not that familiar with how it works on the WAN side of the modem - any pointers to something obvious that I might be missing are also welcome!

Thinkg of moving ISP does it matter much? FTTP

Hey all,

I am with swoop currently and looking to move to superloop. I have FTTP class 3 and I have mesh wifi as I was getting bad signal to my office at the other end of the house from the box.

Which has helped but the last month or so I am getting drop outs and slow speed all over the house even when im near the box.

If I was to change providers would I be having the same issues?

I am either working on spreadsheets or trying to watch streaming services and only two of us in the house so not over used.

Do I need Starlink?

I am living in a private estate kind of residential area and there is very limited nbn options. I currently pay 60$ for very slow internet during peak hours. No other providers like vodafone, telstra or optus have access to the location. Should i consider Starlink? 100Mbps residential plan.

FTTC -> FTTP nightmare: No internet for over a week, any ideas?

We rent a heritage-listed house in inner-city Melbourne that was on FTTC. We have had no internet for over a week, and we all work from home (sharehouse of 4 professionals). We have been with Superloop FTTC for over 2 years (100/40).

On September 15, I arranged to move from Superloop to Amaysim (which had a cheaper deal and a free upgrade to FTTP). On 23 September an NBN tech was sent out opened the pit on the street and couldn’t work out how the old copper gets to the house. He kept asking where the manhole is inside, and we had no idea. He left without doing any work, so there is no fibre and no upgrade was completed.

I made a mistake here: I assumed the upgrade would go through, so on 14 September I put in a cancellation with Superloop to skip their annoying 30 day notice period. I forgot to withdraw it when the upgrade stalled, and the service ended on 14 October. The copper (FTTC) worked fine until that night and on the 15th it no longer worked.

Now NBN lists the address as FTTP, service class 1. Superloop’s rollback requests were rejected, and NBN says it can’t roll back. Other providers can place an order, but a class 1 address means a tech visit, and the last visit failed because nobody can find the path for the lead-in. If I order again, I wait without internet and end up in the same loop...

I have been going back and forth with our agent about the manhole. The landlord can’t remember where it is, and they agent says this isn't something that he can help with.

My 5G home broadband backup plan failed too - Telstra and Optus don’t offer 5G at our address. Vodafone does, but the whole house is a deadspot with 0 to 1 bars, so now I've lost $50 signing up to a plan for that too.

I have filed a TIO complaint yesterday and am yet to hear back. I have contacted Superloop more than 10 times and spent over 2 hours on the phone...

Any ideas? I found an old thread (https://www.reddit.com/r/nbn/comments/1tkl478/comment/ond0gdy/) where someone suggested it's an easy fix for NBN so fingers crossed.

Questions for anyone who has dealt with this:

  1. Can the TIO force NBN & Superloop to roll back my service class so I can order an FTTC connection?
  2. Is there any thing I can get the real estate agent to do? To force some works to enable the FTTP upgrade

Advice FTTB “configuration fault” after switching providers

Hey gang, been on Superloop for over a year with no issues. Made the switch to Leaptel, they’ve been super lovely and helpful but without changing a single thing in my set up I suddenly have a massive fault in the connection.

Troubleshooted everything, even bought a new router (was still using an old optus sagecom that needed upgrading anyway). They raised the issue direct with the NBN and I was meant to have a tech out today, but just recieved an email saying it may be corrected remotely and it’s a configuration fault.

Any tips or ideas on how long this would take to be fixed usually?? Don’t have an NBN box as the apartment complex has a big internal switch board.

Advice Perth gamers: anyone using TPG FTTB 100/25 for Valorant? Worth switching from Aussie Broadband?

Hey everyone, I’m in an apartment in Perth and thinking about switching to TPG’s FTTB 100/25 plan. The offer I saw is $54.99/month for the first 24 months, then $74.99/month.
I’m currently with Aussie Broadband. I’ve tried a 100 Mbps plan, but my connection only gets around 50 Mbps at my unit. I play Valorant over Ethernet and usually get about 70 ms, with spikes up to 110 ms.
Has anyone in Perth tried this TPG FTTB plan, especially someone with a similar problem? What ping do you get in Valorant/other games and is it stable? Did switching improve things, make them worse, or make no difference?
I’m mainly trying to improve ping stability, not just download speed. Any real experiences would be appreciated. Cheers!

Advice Leaptel or Neptune

Hi there I know this is 1 in a million of these posts but the last one I could find was a year ago so I’m unsure if things have changed or not but I just put in my 30 days request with superloop and was looking at either Leaptel (been looking at them for awhile) or what others recommend Neptune. I’m looking for the 1000/100 plan I saw people talking about dedicating ipv4 and ipv6 which tbh I’m not exactly sure what they are outside of connection points. It’s mainly for gaming so connection times both locally and internationally would be a priority

Hi all, I’m having a tough time fault finding my internet at 14 past the hour every hour I get 100% packet loss and ping spikes. I tried glasswire and ping plotter to see what was going on. I’m under the assumption that whatever is doing it is software related however I can’t figure it out. Modem is up to date and restarted constantly, I thought the antivirus on my pc might have something to do with it but no.

Any ideas or suggestions would be incredibly appreciated. Thanks forgot to mention house has fttp

Troubleshooting Am I being an idiot?

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hello everyone,

I'm trying to help a family member set up their internet. The internet provider has confirmed the connection is on. I assumed the NBN box would have something to plug the CAT5e cable into but I haven't seen it, so I've plugged it into the wall. The internet still isn't working.

I have the distinct sense I'm being an idiot and missing something obvious. Any advice?

The 4G back up service that is provided with the Optus Ultra Wi-Fi modem won’t be available. If you add a Home Superfast or Ultrafast speed pack – these speed packs require equipment capable of achieving plan or speed pack speeds and Optus won’t know if your self-supplied modem is compatible or not. Optus will only be able to provide you with general support for your service. Optus won’t be able to identify or fix faults related to your self-supplied modem, you’ll need to contact the manufacturer directly. nbn co reserves the right to refuse to fix a fault where it considers a modem to be the cause or to suspend a service where it considers a modem to be unsupportable or a risk to the network. Your BYO modem must be compatible and in working order and your home setup may impact you from utilising your maximum speed of your internet plan. You are responsible for configuring your modem. Find more information on modem setup.

Modem: Customers are responsible for ensuring their modem is compatible and configured correctly. How the modem is set it up within the premises could limit utilising the maximum speed of the broadband plan.
