Okay, so, context, right? Look, I'm young. I just turned 18 last month. Last year was all about my growth, I was in therapy, rehab (for integrating myself into society, not any substance related issues.), everything. And it helped, I've grown a lot as a person and I'm proud of myself for that. I struggle with quite a few things, I think the only relevant one here is depression.
Last year, I had no friends, none at all. I now have quite a few friends! And I love them all so very much, they're genuinely all some of the greatest people I've met, and I'm so lucky to have them. I've never had so many friends before, I'm so grateful.
The only issue is.., sure, I have all these friends now. Some closer than others, one I've known since middle school, my best friend.
Even then, I just feel like I cannot actually talk to any of them. I do talk to them all, frequently, but when I do I'm more so the listener. I ask them questions, I keep conversations centered around them, avoiding myself in most any aspect. When I do talk about myself I give vague responses. I don't really share anything about myself, not things I enjoy, not stories, not things that bother me. I've stopped showing how I'm really feeling, or if I'm struggling. I just try to keep everything about me positive, I offer as much support as I can.
I simply feel like none of my friends are interested in what I have to say. Whether it's venting or simply talking about something I enjoy, no one seems interested. No one seems to care, everyone gets dry. So I keep the conversations on them.
I have a history of over thinking things, but I've been trying not to just, you know, do that. Some of the examples off the top of my head for feeling this way are;
My best friend has told me not to talk about my current interests at all, stating that I talk way too much about them. (Which, when they said this, I had only mentioned said interested twice before-hand, both times weeks apart.)
Another friend used to vent rather often, not like an overbearing amount, but still. Said friend would also talk about their interests constantly, and for both of those things I did not and do not mind and have encouraged. That's not the issue.
The issue is that the very few times I had ever tried to vent (2-3 times), I only got dry responses, such as 'I'm sorry that sucks :(' - when I had given far more effort and care to them.
As well, when I tried to talk about my own interests (3-4 times), I was just completely ignored.
I will say for the venting part this specific friend had mentioned way before that they are bad with comforting, so I can understand that and don't hold much blame for them due to that.
I used to be a very open person to friends, I used to talk frequently in the past to the people I was friends with. One of these people I am friends with now, my best friend.
Now I'm just.. not. Admittedly, before my year of therapy, I was in a 3 year horrible situationship that left me even more cautious of people, of letting people close. I am scared of vulnerability, and being hurt again. I know it's important to be vulnerable, and I do try. I want to let people in, or at least have one person I feel like I can absolutely trust so genuinely to let them in. I always preach how important it is, and I know how important it is, but I just don't do it for myself.
I'm more social, more outgoing, but I still feel alone. I think that's my fault. I'm just scared, and I know that must sound silly.
