TGV 001, the French Landmark

https://ideas.lego.com/product-ideas/424233c1-e093-46fc-a264-cdbcc009cef2

This model features the TGV 001. It is made up of 2,847 bricks and measures 167 cm long and 8 cm high. It is compatible with tracks so you can display it on any layout.

I have always loved LEGO since I was 5 years old, and for a few years now I’ve been passionate about trains because I’ve always seen trains as the future of transportation. So I chose to recreate the TGV 001 because it marks the starting point of high-speed rail in France, but also because, to me, it represents French know-how on the rails.

For the story, little TGV 001 is an experimental high-speed train that was put into service in 1972 in France. It was designed in collaboration by the French National Railway Company (SNCF) and Alstom, to reach speeds between 250 and 300 km/h in preparation for the creation of a future high-speed network. The TGV 001 operated with four gas turbines that consumed more than six liters of fuel per kilometer.

And today, its two locomotives have been classified as historical monuments. So the TDu 001 (the first locomotive) is displayed near the A4 highway, at exit 50 Schiltigheim-Bischheim, and the TDu 002(last locomotive) is displayed near the A36 highway, at exit 13 for Belfort-Glacis du Château.

TGV 001 still holds the world speed record for a thermal-powered train, set on September 29, 1972, at 318 km/h on the Landes line.

TGV 001 is made up of:

  • 2 locomotives at both ends housing gas turbines that generate electricity for the traction motors
  • 2 passenger cars with seating arrangements
  • 1 car for the rolling laboratory packed with equipment to record the train's dynamic behavior, signal reception quality, and stability

Passenger Budd 85ft stainless steel passenger cars - Coach variants

I have always been fascinated by 90s/2000s lego train sets like, the santa fe and the metroliner. There's just something about those sets has a special charm that sets it apart from contemporary sets that I have no idea how to explain it. Nevertheless, I never had the opportunity to get those sets, and now it's a bit too late. So why not try to capture the essence of them by "combining" the concepts into one MOC, into something straight out of early amtrak?

Here are the coach variants I made, one is the smaller windowed 44-seat Ex-Southern Pacific coach [archive photo], and the other is a larger windowed 56-seat Ex-Penn Central coach [archive photo].

I am making other variants as well to build out a consist. So far ordering from Bricklink, each car costs about ~$50. Suggestions and feedback are welcome!

Remember staring quite some minutes at this as a kid, and was amazed. Also there seems to be some variation with the train cars, for example the 7898 box car has a refridgerating unit, which we never got in the end. Or the loco's seem to have 9v motors.

Question Question on custom wheels for BL Studio

Out of curiosity, does anyone have a reference link or something for #6 disc wheels like what Brick Train Depot or DMR use? I'm wanting to use them in my models in Studio, but I don't know where to find them. I know there is a custom pack for #6 wheels, which I'm currently using, but there's no option for the blind wheels.

Question What's a good recommended way to get started with elevated/slope tracks?

I recently got 60337 and now that we are done with the model, we'd like to experiment a bit with slopes etc. How would I go about it while still having a stable structure?

Passenger My Streamliner excursion train hits the rails…

A cold is kicking my ass today. The silver lining is that left me some time to sit at the kitchen table and finish building the Streamliner Excursion Train that I have been working on across several posts here.

These are my first digital builds: a custom observation car, a full-length dome car, a standard passenger coach, and a café car. All are modeled after Budd Company stainless steel coaches from the 1940s and 1950s, imagined as customized for a heritage excursion train operating from a Lego city. The GCRR in Arizona was my first inspiration but I ended up researching a lot of railroads that operate similar equipment, such as the fleet one of my local Class-1s uses as business cars. I decided a generic red livery would look the most like the archetypal model train under the Christmas tree, which is what I’m going for.

After a lot of painstaking organizing of my big brinklink order and refining the steps on my digital builds into instructions that were easy to follow, it was surreal and satisfying to be paging through the pdf following instructions that I made that looked like Lego instructions. So I’m glad I got through the software learning curve.

Seeing AFOL world is definitely fun, but I hope I can keep my wits about me before this gets expensive.

I’m working on sharing some of these designs and the passenger coach has now been approved on Rebrickable: https://rebrickable.com/mocs/MOC-279144/Black%20Bear%20Bricks/streamliner-passenger-coach/#details

MOC Wild West Train Tune Up

This is what I've done to my BDP Western Train.

I mainly focused on three parts while leaving the coach and boxcar as they are.

The locomotive changes were mostly aesthetic, making a more defined smokebox, the official cowcatcher piece. But I also wanted more convincing cylinders, so the pilot bogie was redesigned to swivel on it's own.

The tender was extended to have two bogies. I felt better sacrificing a little authenticity so the powered up wheels can move freely. The battery box is accessible through the easy to remove wood load.

The flatcar was also extended and given planks across the top. The centerpiece between the bogies is the same as the boxcar. The load on top now includes what was on the original car along with additional boxes and a cannon in front of the safe.

This was the set that got me into the BDP sets. I've since gotten the shed, will have the F unit, and had ordered the freight depot. I'd even put it up there with some of Lego's classic. It's one of my favorites.

SciFi Lego Monorail Automation in 2026

Hi all. My son 12yo is interested in automating our Lego space monorail switches. I’ve seen a bunch of different options on YouTube and some vendors are no longer producing monorail automation products (4d brix)

I think the best option are powered up motors with the app but curious if there is a more elegant solution. In late 2026, what are people using for their automation software and servos.

We are somewhat space constrained, our layout is a 18 plate (3x6) layout using MILS plates. Im happy to use third party products if they are smaller and Lego compatible.

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

LEGO Ideas Katy- The Caboose Who Got Loose

I'd like to show off, Katy Caboose, an old MOC of mine, and more recently an IDEAS entry. She has one more month left on IDEAS so I thought I'd share now, before she's gone off rotation.

https://ideas.lego.com/product-ideas/d4dbb53e-2343-44cb-85bd-da0ef06e260e

In 1952 Walt Disney Animator Bill Peet wrote the story and sketched the characters for the animated short cartoon, "Susie the Little Blue Coupe." Flash forward to 2006, the style of the automotive vehicles in Pixar's Cars movie were inspired by the Susie short. In between, Bill Peet worked on many other Disney films but eventually left the studio in 1964. Along the way, he started writing and illustrating children's books, including, "The Caboose Who Got Loose," which was published in 1971. The title character is Katy Caboose, who does not like spending her life at the end of a train and she is frightened by the high trestles and long tunnels she has to travel through in her life as a caboose. The book opens with the lines,

"When Katy caboose rambled down the train tracks, the engines were steamers with puffing smokestacks. She was a caboose who disliked being last"

While the rhyming could give Dr. Seuss a run for his money, the pictures were just as amazing. Any inanimate object could show subtle human expressions through Peet's anthropomorphic magic. His time at Disney turned him into a wizard.

Here's my take on Katy, where I tried my best to capture some of Peet's magic: you'll see as your view changes that the thin black line of her mouth goes from being a "happy caboose" to showing her fear of the trestles and tunnels ahead.

If you like this IDEA please support it and share it with your friends. Thank you so much.

Diesel BR Class 03 with wagons

I originally had my BR Class 03 MOC in green, but I rebuilt recently to be closer to the proportions of the actual Class 03 and changed the colour to dark/earth blue, which kind of looks better.

Also built some wagons for it with loads in, I’ve had the wagon design for a while but only recently designed the loads that go in them, but now I have a proper train consist. 😄
