Hey everyone!
I've been working on a tool for my own Jellyfin setup, and I'd like to gauge interest from the community before preparing a public GitHub release.
It's called Jellyfin Trend Builder, and it automatically creates and maintains separate Jellyfin libraries for trending movies, trending TV shows, holiday movies, award winners, custom lists, and just about any other category you can build a list for.
One important distinction: this is NOT a Jellyfin plugin.
It runs independently of the Jellyfin client and generates standard folders, symlinks, poster images, and NFO metadata for Jellyfin to scan. That means it isn't tied to a particular Jellyfin client or interface — you can browse the resulting libraries through any Jellyfin client that supports your server's libraries.
What can it do?
- Automatically build custom libraries from TMDB trending feeds, popular titles, TMDB lists, or your own lists.
- Match against your existing media so only titles you already have locally are added to the generated libraries.
- Create symlinked folders without duplicating your actual media files or changing your original libraries.
- Download posters with visual overlays, including ranking numbers, release years, and movie/TV labels.
- Generate rich NFO metadata, including plots, genres, cast, studios, and provider IDs. It prefers metadata already available in Jellyfin before falling back to TMDB.
- Import IMDb and Letterboxd lists to create your own custom categories.
- Edit your library configuration through a web UI. You can add, duplicate, edit, and delete list entries and configure your trend libraries from your browser instead of manually editing the CSV file.
- Automatically manage Jellyfin libraries, including creating libraries and removing expired or stale generated libraries within the configured trend directory.
- Run scheduled updates so your categories stay fresh without manual intervention.
- Optionally integrate with Jellyseerr/Overseerr-compatible APIs to request titles that are missing from your collection.
Some examples
You could have separate libraries for:
- Trending Movies
- Trending TV Shows
- Christmas & Holiday Movies
- Fright Night
- Classic Kung Fu
- Oscar Winners
- Top Black Films
- Easter Movies
- Custom IMDb or Letterboxd lists
You configure the jobs, and the builder handles matching your local media, generating the folders and metadata, downloading artwork, and refreshing the corresponding Jellyfin libraries.
What's under the hood?
It's a Python application designed for Docker deployment, with CSV-based configuration, a browser-based editor, and scheduled execution. It requires an existing Jellyfin server and access to your media folders.
I'm using it in my own setup, but before I spend time polishing the repository and publishing a public GitHub release, I'd like to know whether there's interest in the community.
A few questions:
- Would you use something like this in your Jellyfin setup?
- Which features interest you the most?
- What would you want to see added or improved before a public release?
If there's enough interest, I'll prepare the repository for release.
I'm happy to hear honest feedback, suggestions, and feature requests. Thanks!
