HISTORY April Fool's Day Volcano Eruption
On April 1, 1974, a local business owner and prankster in Sitka, Alaska, named Oliver "Porky" Bickar pulled off one of history's most famous April Fools' jokes. He spent three years gathering old tires (about 70 to 150 depending on the account) and waited for a clear day.
With the help of a helicopter pilot, he hauled the tires to the crater of Mount Edgecumbe—a dormant volcano near Sitka. They packed the tires with fuel, oily rags, and smoke bombs, set them ablaze, and spray-painted "APRIL FOOL" in massive black letters in the snow.
While he had notified the FAA and local authorities ahead of time, he forgot to tell the Coast Guard, which scrambled a pilot to investigate the sudden plume of black smoke. The Coast Guard pilot flew over the crater, spotted the burning tires and the bold message, and radioed back in amusement.
