Announcement: New Rules regarding AI Content on the subreddit.

AI slop is not allowed on this subreddit in any capacity.

You may use an AI to correct grammar, improve word choice, or refine work you've already written, but AI should not be used for anything more than polishing an existing piece.

Posts or comments that are obviously AI written, heavily AI assisted, generic, mass-produced, or otherwise low-effort may be removed.

We are also not obligated to prove that something is AI-generated before acting. If the mod team determines that a post or comment is low-effort or AI slop, we reserve the right to remove it regardless of what it says.

You can use AI to polish your work, but not to do your work for you.

Thanks.

my_qualifications: Moderator.

ModAnnouncement Moderator Announcement - About the Current State of r/Indians_StudyAbroad

With the recent growth of the subreddit, we have seen it increasingly drift away from what it is primarily meant to be: a place for Indians who are planning to study abroad, currently studying abroad, or trying to make informed decisions about doing so.

We want the subreddit to remain a place where people can hear both the good and the bad. Critical experiences are welcome. Positive experiences are welcome. What we do not want is repetitive fearmongering, blind optimism, personal attacks, sweeping claims about entire countries or nationalities, or discussions that have little to do with studying abroad.

We will therefore be enforcing the following standards more consistently going forward:

Keep discussions directly connected to studying abroad

Admissions, universities, programmes, applications, scholarships, funding, education loans, student visas, accommodation, internships, student jobs, academic/student life, adjusting to another country and post-study career outcomes are all relevant.

Standalone questions about immigration, PR/citizenship, “which country should I settle in?”, “how can I leave India?”, Indian politics, or general expat/career discussions DO NOT BELONG HERE. Post-study work and immigration can only be discussed when they are directly relevant to evaluating a specific study pathway.

Do some research before asking others to make a major decision for you

Posts asking which is the best country to study abroad or is Germany worth without context WILL BE REMOVED. Tell us your background, what you are considering, what you have already found, and what question remains.

Claims need context

If you are telling someone that a country has no jobs, that a degree has poor prospects, that sponsorship is impossible, that a university is bad, etc., PLEASE EXPLAIN THE BASIS OF YOUR ADVICE. Relevant firsthand experience, field, approximate time period or a credible source makes advice much more useful. You do not need to disclose private identifying information. The same rule applies to overly optimistic claims.

Being critical is welcome; putting people down is not

Disagree with someone’s plan, assumptions or information as strongly as you want, but explain why. Comments whose main contribution is “you’re stupid,” “you won’t survive abroad,” “go back/stay in India,” mocking someone’s background, or similar personal attacks WILL BE REMOVED.

Do not generalise about Indians or any other nationality

I can’t believe that I need to say this but any posts generalizing a nationality WILL BE REMOVED! Experiences involving poor behaviour, discrimination, cultural differences, housing, workplaces, etc. can and SHOULD be discussed.

HOWEVER, these individual experiences should NOT be made into statements about what ‘Indians are like’ or what ‘Germans are like’ or even what ‘the West thinks of Indians’. Nationality-wide judgment is not useful advice and WILL BE REMOVED.

Repetitive doomposting and repetitive hype will be removed

We do not want ten posts on ‘Germany is finished’, ‘UK has no jobs’ or ‘Canada is dead’, etc. Comment on previous posts on the same topic. Posts without substantive new information WILL BE REMOVED.

Likewise, repetitive hype or overly optimistic posts are not exempt from the same standard.

“Announcement”, “Official”, “Mod Announcement” and official announcement flairs are reserved for moderators.

Use a normal descriptive title for personal posts. Do not use these terms in your post or it WILL BE REMOVED. Repeated misuse will get you BANNED!

No commercial solicitation

As always, study-abroad counsellors, agents, admissions consultants, or anyone offering such services ARE NOT WELCOME to use this subreddit to find clients, advertise services, or promote themselves through comments.

YOU WILL BE BANNED!

This is an India-centred community

The subreddit exists to help Indian applicants and students. People from other countries are welcome to contribute in terms of relevant firsthand experience. However, as mentioned before, unnecessary pessimism / optimism / racial attacks / hate comments ARE NOT WELCOME!

Finally, we are also looking for new moderators

We need a few active moderators to help manage the queue and deal with reports.

You do not need previous moderation experience. Though, it will definitely be a plus. People who are active in this community are welcome to apply. People representing any sort of agency / consultancy are NOT WELCOME TO APPLY.

If you are interested, please send me a message.

Engineering Is it worth it to go to Singapore for UG (NTU/NUS) in 2027, how much better is it compared it UK unis

Aspiring to go to NTU/NUS in 2027 but I read some posts here suggesting the opposite about how sg is very bad for roi, the Qs ranking is inflated and it is not worth the investment as the profs are avg. My friends suggested to try for UK instead of SG.

AdmissionProcedure/CollegeAdmin How long does the Malaysia student visa process take for Indian students?

My_qualifications are undergraduate in Arts from Uni of Mumbai. I’m considering applying to a Malaysian university and trying to figure out how much time I should keep between receiving my offer letter and the course starting date.

I understand that the university handles the EMGS Student Pass application, but I’ve seen different timelines online. Some say a few weeks, while others mention longer delays during busy admission periods.

For Indian students, how early should we ideally start the process to avoid missing the intake?

Engineering Profile Evaluation - How competetive is my profile?

Hey everyone!

I’m planning to apply for Fall 2027 master’s programs in the US, UK, and Singapore, and I’d love to get your honest feedback on my profile, target schools, and overall chances of admission.

My_qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree: Electrical Engineering from a Tier-1 institute
  • CGPA: 8.25/10 (3.77 WES-converted GPA)
  • GRE: 324 (166Q, 158V)
  • TOEFL: 110
  • Research: 2 IEEE publications, both first-authored
  • Work experience: ~2.5 years at an MBB consulting firm working in their AI team (Top performer)
  • LORs: 1 from my employer, 2 from professors with whom I’ve co-authored research papers
  • Entrepreneurship: Founded a funded startup during college
  • Extracurriculars: Participated in and won multiple state- and national-level competitions in music and sports

Target programs:

  • MIT – Technology and Policy Program (TPP)
  • Stanford – Management Science and Engineering (MSE)
  • Cornell Tech – Data Science and Decision Analytics (DSDA)
  • Imperial College London – MSc AI, Economics and Policy
  • NTU Singapore – MSc Artificial Intelligence
  • Columbia - MS Artificial Intelligence
  • CMU – AI Systems Management

I’m primarily building my profile around AI safety, with an interest in the intersection of AI, technology policy, and responsible AI development.

I’d really appreciate your thoughts on a few things:

  1. How competitive is my profile for these programs?
  2. Am I being too ambitious with this shortlist, or do I have a reasonable shot at some of these schools?
  3. Are there any gaps in my profile that I should focus on addressing before applications open?

Any honest feedback or suggestions for other programs that align with my interests would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Cost of Living How are Indian students managing rising tuition fees and living costs abroad?

my_qualifications Btech
With tuition fees and living costs rising, studying abroad is becoming more expensive for Indian students. Many rely on education loans, part-time jobs, scholarships, or financial support from their families to manage expenses. Rent, groceries, and transportation can take up a huge part of their monthly budget. For those already studying abroad, how are you managing these expenses, and what tips would you share with students planning to go abroad?

Law What are some Credible University rankings for law and related disciplines? (Europe only)

My_qualifications: BA LLB (Hons.) with more than 1.5 years of work experience as an advocate.

Considering applying for LLM in International criminal law, criminal law and Msc. Criminology and criminal justice. Apart from the well know Oxford, Cambridge, LSE, UCLA, what are some other universities I can apply to?

I'm looking for credible University rankings. Times and NIRF in India have a reputation to award ranks on the basis of money given by the universities. The college I did law from always ranks in the top 5 in QS rankings but I know they land there by filling surveys fraudulently on behalf of the students. So I absolutely don't trust QS rankings either.

What rankings can I consider that will hopefully be unbiased and cannot be bought?

CSE/ECE Which university to go for - guide me in deciding among options?

I'm confused between two choices:

  1. I'm getting a more known (highly reputed - within world top 50) university in the US and UK both.

  2. Meanwhile, I had also applied to Germany as a backup. Here, the university I have gotten has no tuition fee (very cheap), but it's definitely not a well known university. It's good and established but not anywhere in top colleges globally.

My study area remains same in all (Masters in Data Science / AI). I'm so confused which one to choose!

I'm bit anxious reading always that there's extreme shortage of jobs / visa sponsorship worries with UK, USA, and it's far easier in Germany comparatively.

Can anyone guide me? Please let me know if prefer talking over dm.

my_qualifications: B.tech from T-1 Indian college, 9 CGPA. 5+ years work ex in the same field which I'm applying to.

ToAbroadOrNot? YSK - Don’t choose Australia for education or PR

  1. Selling education is an industry here, also you won’t learn nothing much there’s absolutely little campus life or university life.
  2. The govt sees international students as culprits and blames them for everything so temporary visa holders are the first to get hit
  3. Absurd change in immigration rules
  4. While minimum basic wage is high, the cost of living is rapidly increasing and it’s very real.

ToAbroadOrNot? Indians living abroad: How are you managing rising living costs and with rupee falling?

I have been wondering this since last year how are so many Indians able to manage their expenses + tuition fees. My_qualifications: I have already graduated and a working professional but am planning to move abroad for masters most probably. But before that I actually want to know how people managed and what difference did it make in their overall quality of life.

Therefore I am also making a publicly available research report from which anyone can benefit, to all those living abroad - if you would be kind enough to fill this out (no personal details asked) this form for the report - it would help the entire community a lot.
Form: https://form.typeform.com/to/RwsuWYL8

Scholarships does DAAD have any specific CGPA criteria for MS in chemistry or related fields? I'm a BSc chemistry student with 7.6 gpa in my first year.

my_qualifications: 2nd year BSc chemistry student in BHU with a minor in zoology

my university has a strict grading system and I slacked off in my first year, studied only a day prior to exams and skipped a lot of classes. now I'm messing up my 3rd semester as well. i can at my best, try to maintain 7.5+ during my course or absolutely stretch my limits to get to 8 or more but most websites mention 8.5+ to ensure qualifying. how to increase the chances of my selection while i still have enough time?

Research [Profile Review] How realistic is my shortlist? Fall 2027 MS in CS (Europe) | 8.1 CGPA (Tier-1 H+), GRE 328 (Q166), dMAT 353, 2 YoE at Semiconductor MNC

Goal: Pursue a research-oriented Master’s in Computer Science to explore and finalize my area of interest before committing to a Ph.D. in Europe. Targeting roles in academia or industrial research labs post-Ph.D.

my_qualifications:

• Education: B.Tech in ECE (with significant CS coursework) from an H+ Indian Institute (Graduated 2025).

• CGPA: 8.1 / 10.0.

• Standardized Tests:

• GRE: 328 (Quant: 166, Verbal: 162, AWA: 4.0)

• IELTS: Band 8.5 (R: 9.0, L: 8.5, W: 8.0, S: 8.0)

• dMAT: 353 / 400 (Subject Math: 200/200, Core: 153/200)

• Work Experience: Systems Software Engineer at a leading semiconductor MNC since 2025 (~2 years by Fall 2027 intake).

• Research Experience:

• Second author on an IEEE paper currently under review in systems research.

• B.Tech Project (undergraduate thesis) in theoretical computer science.

──────

Shortlisted Universities:

Germany:

• Saarland University — M.Sc. Computer Science

• RWTH Aachen — M.Sc. Computer Science

• TU Munich (TUM) — M.Sc. Informatics

• TU Dresden — M.Sc. Computer Science

• University of Bonn — M.Sc. Computer Science

• TU Darmstadt — M.Sc. Computer Science

Other European Targets (Under Consideration):

• Switzerland: EPFL — M.Sc. Computer Science

• Netherlands: TU Delft — M.Sc. Computer Science

• France: Université Paris-Saclay, IP Paris, ENS de Lyon — M.Sc. Computer Science

• Austria: TU Wien — M.Sc. Logic and Computation

As per my understanding, ETH Zurich has a hard cutoff of CGPA 8.8 for indian students so I have omitted it.

──────

Questions:

  1. Given my background and test scores, is this overall shortlist realistic and well-balanced across Reach / Target / Safe?

  2. Are there any obvious red flags, omissions, or recommendations for someone using the Master's as a launchpad into Ph.D.

    1. Are there active Discord servers, groups, or communities of applicants targeting European Master's for 2027? Would love to connect and exchange notes with folks on a similar journey.

Careers How should I move forward with my future, whether a master's or something else[IISER]

So I am a 3rd-year undergrad at IISER. Due to multiple reasons and personal issues, I could bag a CGPA of 6.8 by the end of my 4th semester. I had been anxious about my future, given that I wanted to do a PhD straight out of IISER, not in India. My grades look very underwhelming for grad school admissions in Europe, and given that I will be evaluated based on my 5 years' performance, which I am guessing will be poor as well.

To compensate, at the very least, I tried to do multiple projects- 3, as we are speaking now- under various faculty members at my institute only. I couldn't get the most output from 2 of them, like a paper and all, but I managed to learn some valuable skills.

What I am considering now is doing a separate master's degree after my BS-MS dual degree programme from IISER and then applying for a PhD because then I believe the admissions committee will evaluate my profile based on my master's CGPA, which I am betting will be better. Master's via GATE, TIFR-GS or IIT-JAM.

Will appreciate some guidance, peopleeee

my_qualifications: Completed 4 semesters at IISER

Loans/Fees Can I Show Italy Student Visa Funds Through an SBI Education Loan?

Hi everyone! I’m planning to pursue a Master’s in Italy in 2027 and hoping to get a DSU scholarship that covers my tuition fees.

I need to arrange around ₹15 lakh for living expenses and visa financial proof.

1.How much money must I show for the 2027 student visa?

2.Can I show the entire amount through an education loan?

3.Will SBI disburse the full loan amount into my bank account before the visa?

4.If my tuition fees are covered by a scholarship, will SBI provide a loan specifically for living expenses?

My_qualifications : B.Tech in Computer Science and Data Science 2026

I’d appreciate advice from anyone who has gone through this process. Thanks!
