Mod Post [META] [Mod Announcement] How to use this sub - and how (not) to use the [META] Tag

Hello r/ifyoulikeblank!

This is your friendly neighborhood moderator, here with some information on how to correctly use this sub and our title tags, and to address some recent frequent misuse of the [META] tag in the sub.

If you are new here, please read this post before posting. If you have been around a while, please take a moment to refresh yourself with some of our rules. :)

There are two - and only two - kinds of posts allowed in this sub.

Our sub is NOT a self-promotion vehicle for new artists or creators, and it is NOT a general discussion or song/movie/actor/music/genre identification sub. We are a media recommendation sub, and we have very specific guidelines for posts to be allowed here.

There are two ways to format your post titles here, depending on if you would like to ask for recommendations or to give others recommendations with your OP.

If you want people to recommend things to you:

The “IIL” acronym stands for "If I like..." - to be used in a way that states "If I like (this song) because of (reasons,) what else will I like?"

This is the most common type of post here, and most OPs should be using THIS format for their posts! Your title must use the [IIL] tag - It will be reported by our frequent long-time members here if it does not, and it will be removed if you use the [IYL] or [META] tags instead of the [IIL] tag.

The title should look like the following example:

[IIL] The song (name a song you like here) because (give a specific trait about it you want suggestions to include), [WEWIL?]

  • The "WEWIL" acronym stands for "What else will I like?”

  • Your example should include something specific about the song that you want to hear more of in the music recommended to you. (Without details, no one can give you appropriate responses and you won't get suggestions that you will actually LIKE.)

If you want to recommend media to others that you think they'll like based on some other piece of media that is similar:

The “IYL” acronym stands for "If YOU like..." - to be used in a way that states "If you enjoy (this song) because of (reasons,) you might also like this song."

This tag is not for self promotion. This SUB is not for self promotion. If you post your own material here, you WILL get banned, without warning. No exceptions, no appeals.

The title should look like the following example:

[IYL] The movie (some movie similar to your suggestion) because (your reason you think it is similar to your recommendation), [YMAL] (this suggested movie).

  • The "YMAL" acronym stands for "You may also like..."

  • This is a VERY uncommon post type in this sub, unless people are attempting to subvert rule 2. We ALWAYS look at these posts, but if we miss one, our long-term members sure won’t - and they WILL report you for a rule 2 violation and you WILL be banned.

  • If you are suspected of passing off your own media as an "I found this new media and you might like it!" post, that will earn you an immediate permanent ban from the sub for trying to subvert rule two.

Please note that moderators look at your posting history across Reddit, and if you are spamming your own stuff elsewhere, you are going get a ban here. Period.

How to use (and how NOT to use) the [META] tag:

The [META] tag is NOT so you may post off-topic posts or general media discussion posts or music identification posts, or anything that is not an IIL or an IYL.

The [META] tag is only to be used if you have questions or comments about this subreddit itself, and how it operates on Reddit.

Examples include suggestions for new rules here, asking for clarification about a rule here, suggesting a new theme, stickied post, etc in the sub, or asking the moderation team any other question about this sub - not asking the members here about media.

Thank you all for reading, and for your help in ensuring these rules are adhered to. We are a million-member (and counting) sub with a VERY small moderation team, so your help in following these rules and reporting rule-breaking posts to us is greatly appreciated!

Have a wonderful day :)

Books [IIL] Children’s/picture books that break the fourth wall, or know that it’s a book.

I love reading books to my five year old son, and the ones that I like the most are the self referential books like “The Stinky Cheese Man”, “True Story of the Three Little Pigs”, “Nibbles the Book Monster” (monster that escapes through flaps and holes cut in the book itself), and things like that!

Games IIL: games like Stalker Anomaly and Mount & Blade where the game’s world and characters move along without your involvement; WEWIL?

These games scratch a specific type of itch for me; maybe because they play in such a rare way. There is less emphasis on a set narrative and moreso on dynamic encounters that dont ever play out the same way twice for the player. You fight, lose, make mistakes, have some bad luck, etc. but its your journey and it leads to you improving your odds and becoming a bigger fish in the pond over time

- you aren’t the main character, npcs and their parties roam the world and have just as much agency as you.

Example of unpredictable events and sandbox elements:

- in STALKER, the guy you took a quest from might die in a shootout in a different region of the map, causing you to fail the quest. You now have a reason to fight the faction who inadvertently caused a hit to your reputation. Or on the other hand, someone else may gun down the mutant you were hired to hunt while you were asleep at night which results in an easy payday the next morning without lifting a finger

Example of emergent storytelling and dynamic experiences:

- In Mount & Blade, the enemy lord and his party outnumber you, refuses to let you leave peacefully and sells your whole warband into slavery, and you get dragged around as a POW for days only because you have a poor reputation with him from the time you raided one of his fiefdoms. Or maybe you see two massive armies fighting and you decide to join one side as a mercenary, and fast forward years later you are now second in line to the throne as an avowed vassal

I just really enjoy games like these where the player isnt a plot armored chosen one and other NPCs are inhabiting the world, making things happen without any input, leading to interesting interactions or opportunities. What other games are built like these?

Music IIL time’s arrow (thursday) & OK computer (radiohead)

hello!!! i’m looking for more songs/bands/etc with a veeeery specific vibe

time’s arrow by thursday is an all-time favorite song of mine, i love the distortion on the instruments & audio effects, and how it all sounds “dreamy”. the intensity of the vocals is also perf! the lyricism is also so so good

and of course, pretty much the entire OK computer album by radiohead is a fave of mine too. again, the distorted effects and dreamy/trippy style is right up my alley

i do love most emo music so i’m always down for listening to new bands in that genre, especially if they incorporate the type of sounds/vocals as above

thank u!!

Games IIL 2000s metalcore, nu metal, 7th generation video games, and the general edgy subculture aesthetics of the 2000s, is there new media that has a similar spirit?

I am in love with this stuff. But I feel like I can't find anything similar to it today.

Everything "edgy" I look for today is genuinely dark and depressing, and inward facing anxiety. When instead, I think I'm looking for a a cathartic and rebellious and aggressive kind of edginess that is surface level. It would be more style than substance.

I am not certain if that is exactly what I'm looking for.

But if anything made today embodies a similar spirit to a Shonen AMV from 2005, I think I'd find it awesome. Or something like the video game Shadow the Hedgehog, or ruthless aggression era WWE.

It can be a game, or any kind of medium. I am specifically interested in games, seeing that new games often don't scratch this itch at all for me.

Music IIL "Kiss King" by Pigface, what other songs have that vibe?

Here's a link to the song:

I like the ethereal, and slightly erotic energy of the song. I love how strange and mysterious and frantic it sounds. Are there any songs like it?

Music [IIL] Roach - Dead Poet Society

Similar song that has scratched this itch is “Whatever Alright” by vianova.

Loved Monarch, and I’ve been slowly going through the DPS discography. Something about this particular flavor of compressed mumbly vocals, interesting beats and down tuned guitars has been super fun.

Started making a tiny playlist of mildly similar songs and I need more. Open to some more experimental or genre bending alt rock/metalcore adjacent music.

Music [IIL] Nightcall by Kavinsky, what should I listen to next?

I like synthwave in general but Nightcall scratches my brain differently. I think it’s cause the beat is so simple and repetitive that you can fully sink into the scene. I haven’t found that in any other song. These are the closest I’ve found so far:

- MZ - Sacha Funke https://open.spotify.com/track/3jMLZmglAXlcw9c6gUpx3b?si=z8Lw_1_SSrSmBiYKz1U1Tw&utm_source=copy-link

- Palm Of My Hand - ZHU https://open.spotify.com/track/4SdTlyC3TJfxsNetvoVlum?si=pfPJ3r5jROKnrt1RPdJC4g&utm_source=copy-link

- Veridis Quo - Daft Punk https://open.spotify.com/track/2LD2gT7gwAurzdQDQtILds?si=JHknlQjxTje-VrQWosQjdA&utm_source=copy-link

- Da Funk - Daft Punk: https://open.spotify.com/track/0MyY4WcN7DIfbSmp5yej5z?si=d6TnS-8jTJ2FR9olBwIQ5w&utm_source=copy-link

If you haven’t heard any of these they’re absolute bangers. PLEASE I NEED RECS my eardrums are begging for something new!!

Music [IIL] Disciplina Kičme's early stuff, than what other bands that sound similar to them would i like?

Hello everyone.

In 1981 a band called "Disciplina Kičme" was formed in the serbian (then yugoslavian) town of belgrade, in the beginning the band consisted of only two members, Bassist and Vocalist Dušan Kojić and drummer Srđan "Žika" Todorović, with this lineup the band would record the albums "Sviđa mi se da ti nebude prijatno" and the album (which on some tracks would even feature a brass section) "Ja imam šarene oći", these two are my most favourite albums by them and i have not yet managed to find anything else similar to them, so, does any one have any tips?

Music [IIL] This stock music found on a Star Wars making-of DVD [WEWIL]

This music is from the extras disc of the "Episode II - Attack of the Clones" DVD, youtube video below @ 3:13:20 (3 hours, 13 minutes, 20 seconds).

I love the bouncy fun early 2000s techno groove it has going on. Are there any EDM artists that have a similar fun vibe? Preferably instrumental music, no vocalist.

Hunting around, I did find the stock music artist's name: James Kalamasz (song name: Afro Fusion) - but he's truly a stock music dude, nothing else sounds the same. He seems to just crank out tunes in a huge variety of genres - rock, folk, country, smooth jazz, etc.

Music [IIL] nipsey hussle

been playing the later nipsey albums on repeat lately. been a while since i’ve been on a hip hop vibe. also been vibing with some j. stone and cuzzy capone. the rules say you need to add why you like it so i would say because it’s super G, real, and also beautiful in it’s way and potent.

do you have more for me? :) thanks!
