Hi Reddit! I’m Ryan Kellogg, an energy and environmental economist at the University of Chicago’s Harris School of Public Policy. Proof.

I’m the Ralph and Mary Otis Isham Professor at Harris, our Deputy Dean for Academic Programs, and the Faculty Director of Harris’s MS in Climate and Energy Policy. Before joining Harris, I spent four years working for BP in Houston and Alaska as an engineer and economic analyst. Today, my research focuses on energy markets, the behavior of oil and gas producers, and what actually happens when governments try to reduce carbon emissions

Energy policy involves some difficult trade-offs. Affordable and reliable energy has enormous economic value, particularly in developing countries, while our historical reliance on fossil fuels creates substantial environmental and climate costs. Much of my work asks how we can reduce those costs while taking seriously the way consumers, companies, and global energy markets actually respond to policies.

Sometimes those responses are surprising. My research has found that blocking an oil pipeline may shift most of the oil onto trains rather than leave it underground, potentially increasing local air pollution. I’ve studied how the Jones Act (the century-old law governing shipping between U.S. ports) raises petroleum costs. And my work on the eventual “end of oil” suggests that when producers expect oil demand to decline in the future, they may invest and produce less today rather than rush to pump everything they can.

Carbon taxes and cap-and-trade have long been favored by economists, but clean-energy standards and subsidies can have important advantages too. I’ve argued that effective climate policy will probably require a portfolio of approaches taken together. Because carbon emissions are global, policies also need to account for what happens outside the country that adopts them.

Hi Reddit. I'm Mo Tamman, an investigative data and computational editor at Reuters, and I developed the concept for our new series on heat storms.

Scientists talk about the risks of the planet warming more than 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, but that means little to most people. Heat waves are different. Everyone already understands them, so looking at how they have changed — and, boy, have they changed! — can show what’s happening to our climate.

The problem was that there was no standard definition of a heat wave. For example, the US National Weather Service uses two or more days of abnormally hot weather, while the UK, France, Spain and Australia use three. Such dueling definitions made it nearly impossible to tell whether heat waves are becoming more common worldwide.

So in consultation with two dozen climate scientists, meteorologists and weather researchers, we developed a universal definition of a heat wave and identified a new concept: the heat storm. 

• Heat wave: five or more days in a row when a location's daily high is in the hottest 10% of its 1961–1990 range for that day of the year.
• Heat storm: a heat wave that, at its peak, covers at least 1% of the planet, roughly half the size of Canada. 

Calling something that big a "heat wave" would be like calling a monsoon a rain shower. We also give each heat storm a name, as is done with hurricanes.

AMA: I am Bryant Simon, a Temple University-based toilet scholar, here to talk about my new book, For Customers Only, covering the fraught history of public bathrooms in the US. Ask me about studying bathrooms and how toilets have made the US less equal!

There is a war going on in the United States. It is, currently, being waged against the unhoused and against trans and genderqueer people, though it affects everyone. This war is being fought at the bathroom door, just like it has for the last hundred or so years in the United States. My new book, For Customers Only, recounts the history of public bathrooms in the United States. Really, it tells the story of how bathrooms limited some people with less access to the public and fewer freedoms.

During the earliest days of the 20th century, government officials from Philly to Portland concluded that the private sector had failed to provide enough toilets to meet the intimate needs of the public. In response, they launched a massive public bathroom building campaign, marked by blustering speeches from mayors and ribbon-cutting ceremonies open to the press. But when these places attracted an unanticipated crowd of the poor, the unhoused, and sex-seekers, they started to criminalize these spaces and then to close them to try to “disappear” those they deemed less savory. The war had begun.

That brings us to today and America’s current public bathroom problem. According to a recent study, the US is 59th in public bathrooms per capita, on par with Botswana and Bulgaria, and well-behind the world leader, Iceland.

I'm Rachel Shelden, a professor at Penn State University. I'm here to talk about my new book, The Political Supreme Court: A Forgotten History.

I'm Rachel Shelden and I am a professor of history and the director of the George & Ann Richards Civil War Era Centerat Penn State University. I'm really looking forward to answering questions you might have about the research, writing, and content of my new new book, The Political Supreme Court: A Forgotten History, which will be out next week with UNC Press/Hodding Carter III imprint.

The book argues that the Supreme Court was a political institution by design and in practice during the nineteenth century. Members of the Court engaged with politics along three intersecting lines: (1) outside the courtroom, by participating in a wide range of partisan activities such as campaigning, writing legislation, ghost writing presidential addresses, and even running for office from the bench; (2) through "judicial representation"--the now abandoned concept that justices would "represent" a particular region of the country where they would interact with the people through the practice of "circuit riding" (serving concurrently as circuit judges and holding federal trials); and (3) in their courtroom, where they did not command ultimate constitutional authority but instead were participating in a broadly-shared conversation about the nature, function, and future of the Union.

I spent 13 years researching and writing this book, and the sources are wide-ranging, from "traditional" legal sources such as court cases and statutes to letters and diaries, newspapers & pamphlets, and even etiquette books and housing records.

Hi Reddit! I’m Michael. In the late nineties, I rolled out one of the first and the largest decentralized payment network in existence at the time, by connecting over 100 mobile operators across Europe to a single billing interface - enabling enterprises to charge mobile phone users no matter which network they connected to. In the early 2000s, I led mobile game development at THQ, where we built the first downloadable phone games, heralding the app economy that still thrives today. Back then, the world was still figuring out whether people would even want to do these things. 

Today, I’m President and CTO of Casper, and I feel similarly about what we’re building. I think that over the next five to ten years, some of this technology will make everyday life easier without you necessarily noticing it’s there.

If “blockchain” makes you think mostly of crypto, I get it. That’s where the noise is. But a lot is happening underneath it. At Casper, one of the things we’re working on is tokenization: making it possible to represent assets, such as a property or a stake in a business, as digital tokens people can own and trade. What excites me is opening up markets where participating has often required a lot of money or the right connections. You shouldn’t have to afford an entire building to own a small part of it, and selling your share should be simpler than it is today.

We’re also working on payments for AI agents. If you ask an agent to do a job, it can still get stuck when it needs to pay for information or a service. Giving it a way to make small payments within a budget you set might sound like a minor feature, but it could let your agent finish much more of the work without handing it back to you. And if you sell something online, an AI agent could become your customer, too. 

These are two areas I spend a lot of time thinking about and building for. You don’t need to know anything about crypto (or be interested in it) to join the conversation. Ask me anything!

I've spent 20 years in the car business, starting as a salesperson in 2006. Since then, I've worked as an Internet Sales Manager, Finance Manager, Finance Director, Used Car Sales Manager, and General Sales Manager. For the last five years, I've been the General Manager of a Ford dealership.

I'm responsible for the entire operation. New and used car sales, finance, service, parts, staffing, profitability, customer complaints, and just about every problem that makes its way through the building.

Our games section has been growing, and we recently launched Catalogues, a daily game that asks you to sort seven items into their correct order (which might be, for example, chronological, or biggest to smallest). I spend a lot of my time thinking about clues, wordplay, and what makes a challenge fun as opposed to frustrating.
