How is the hospitality job market in Houston right now?

Hi everyone!

I’m looking to understand the current hospitality job market in Houston, Texas, and would love to hear from people who are working in the industry or have recently been job hunting there.

How is the market right now in terms of hiring, competition, and pay? Are hotels, restaurants, and larger hospitality groups actively hiring, or has it become difficult to find decent opportunities?

I’d also be interested in hearing about:

  • Which roles or areas of hospitality have the best prospects right now.
  • What employers typically look for in candidates.
  • Whether salaries are reasonable relative to the cost of living in Houston.
  • Any tips for someone looking to enter or advance in the industry.

I would absolutely love to know about your personal experiences and honest insights.

Thank you :)

This role is responsible for full-cycle payroll processing, timekeeping review, employee payroll issue resolution, payroll tax compliance, PTO and benefits deduction reconciliation, reimbursements, retirement-plan payroll activity, and job/client cost coding.

The Payroll Specialist reports to the HR Director and works closely with Accounting, Operations, employees, managers, clients, and third-party payroll providers to ensure every employee is paid accurately and on time, regardless of which state or client project they're working on.

Key Responsibilities

Full-Cycle Payroll Processing

  • Own end-to-end processing of weekly, biweekly, and other applicable payroll cycles for entire employee population.
  • Review employee timecards and follow up directly with employees and managers on missing, incomplete, or inaccurate time and approvals.
  • Validate regular hours, overtime, double time, holiday pay, allowances, reimbursements, per diem, deductions, and other earnings.
  • Process off-cycle payments, corrections, and retroactive pay as needed.

Multi-State & Field Workforce Payroll

  • Process payroll accurately for employees working across multiple states and client sites, including a traveling installation and field-technician workforce.
  • Apply correct state-specific wage-and-hour rules, including California double time and holiday-worked requirements, prevailing wage, per diem, travel pay, and other project-specific compensation.
  • Set up and maintain employee withholding and unemployment tax accounts as ESP's workforce is deployed into new states.

Job Costing & Client/Project Coding

  • Maintain accurate payroll coding by client, project, department, division, and work location to support job costing and accurate client billing.

  • Flag and resolve coding discrepancies that could affect project profitability or billing accuracy.

Reconciliation & Compliance

  • Reconcile PTO balances, payroll deductions, benefit deductions, and other employee payroll records.
  • Support 401(k) payroll deductions, remittances, and coordination with plan administrators.
  • Own payroll tax filing accuracy and timeliness (e.g., 941, 940, state unemployment) in coordination with any third-party payroll providers.
  • Maintain accurate, audit-ready payroll documentation and protect confidential employee compensation, banking, tax, and personal information.

Reporting & Cross-Functional Support

  • Prepare payroll reports and supporting documentation for Accounting, HR, management, tax reporting, workers' compensation, and audits.
  • Support payroll-related general-ledger reconciliations.
  • Maintain payroll system configurations within HR&P / HRP Pro (earning codes, departments, locations, PTO configurations, deductions, employee access).
  • Assist with payroll system implementations, conversions, and testing as needed.

Qualifications

Required

  • 3+ years of hands-on, full-cycle payroll processing experience, including direct ownership of a payroll cycle from timecard to filing.
  • Demonstrated multi-state payroll experience, including withholding and unemployment tax setup across jurisdictions.
  • Job costing experience — proven ability to code and allocate payroll/labor hours by client, project, or job code for cost tracking and billing accuracy.
  • Experience processing payroll for both hourly and salaried employees.
  • Working knowledge of overtime, payroll taxation, deductions, PTO, reimbursements, and wage-and-hour requirements.

If anyone is hiring I am looking! I would be open to new things if I could get the support needed. Even if it’s outside of my experience. I previously worked as a Service Desk Admin provisioning access all day for fellow employees in an IT setting and brief troubleshooting. But i’ve also worked in call centers, briefly as a server, retail, hostess.

HIRING Title: [Hiring] Remote HR People Partner — Part-Time, $20–$35/hour

Hi everyone,

I’m helping a business client find 1–2 reliable people for a part-time remote HR People Partner role with a distributed international team. I’ll be helping with the first step and then passing suitable candidates over to the client.

The work is mostly about helping new team members settle in, keeping communication organized, and making sure people feel supported. You don’t need years of corporate HR experience, as training and onboarding will be provided, but you should be comfortable talking to people and handling responsibilities consistently.

Most of the work involves coordinating onboarding for new international hires, checking in with team members to gather feedback, helping maintain a friendly remote team culture, and keeping basic internal documentation organized. You’ll also help make sure communication between team members and leadership stays clear.

Hours would be part-time and flexible, with the exact weekly schedule to be discussed. Pay is $20–$35/hour, depending on experience, responsibilities, and workload. There would be an initial training and assessment period, with the duration, compensation, and expectations clarified before it begins.

You should have strong written and spoken English, good organizational skills, empathy, and the ability to learn new digital tools. You’ll also need a reliable laptop or desktop and a stable internet connection.

If you’re interested, send me a message with a little about your previous experience, your rough availability per week, your current time zone, and the city and country you’re based in.

No need to post your resume in the comments.

$20/hr — Looking for occasional junk removal help in Spring Branch / Houston

Hey everyone! I own a junk removal business and am looking for someone reliable to help with jobs around Spring Branch (77080 zip code) and the surrounding Houston area.

Work involves removing general household junk or yard debris and loading a truck/trailer. You’ll need to be comfortable with physical work, lifting heavy items, and working outdoors.

Pay is $20/hour with a two-hour minimum per callout. If you have a truck we can use for jobs, we can agree on additional pay for its use, plus gas. A truck is a bonus, not required.

This is occasional, as-needed work to start, so it could be a good fit for someone looking to earn extra money. No junk removal experience needed—just be dependable, show up on time, and treat customers respectfully.

Interested? Send me a DM with your general location, availability, and any relevant experience. Let me know if you have a truck available, too.

Thanks!
