Advice Needed Doodlz TCG : Should I Highlight

Thumbnail

Hello, I tried out this thing where I highlight words of a the ability box that can help the player scan the cards faster and understand key points of focus. Like this Krab , it’s highlighted words emphasizes Defend as the trigger started , the search as the outcome of the starter and the Iron Claw as the target of the trigger. I’ve done this for about 20 cards, but I’m getting close to the point where I’m about to do a review of the 110 cards I’ve gotten done so far. Should I keep the highlight effects or remove them ? What do you guys think as players ? Would
It make a difference in understanding the cards ?

Card Critique First look at our TCG in development! What's your first impressions and thoughts about the card layout?

Post image
53 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

Since this is our first post about our project, let's start with a quick introduction!

We are working on a trading card game named STARS ALIGNED TCG, which is a duel-based game. This project has been in the work for more than three years to create an interesting gameplay with unique mechanics such as completing quests during the game to gain new abilities. In STARS ALIGNED you can only have 1 of each character in your deck and can control up to 6 heroes at once. We want each character to be important and irreplaceable while having synergies between them. You have to choose your heroes carefully before the game since each of them has their role to play.

We put a focus on the character building and lore behind each of them. When we commission an illustration to an artist, they get to learn who the character is, which other character is a part of their life (family, friends, enemies, etc.), where they are in this unique universe and more.

We’ll explain a lot more about the game in future posts, but today we wanted to show you a card and ask for your feedback about the heroes' card layout. Since our heroes are unique, all heroes have full art illustrations.

Thank you to @/saki___0116 on X (Twitter) for the wonderful illustration of Hikari!

Advice Needed Help me decide what art to use for the demo of my card game!

Post image

Trying to decide what version of this hero artwork to use in the demo of my game before I start the final line art and rendering. I've done three drafts and normally would just ask some friends but I'm curious as to what unbaised strangers on the internet think!

Which artwork do you think would work best for a demo copy of my game?

(Art is still rough/draft, not looking for critiques or changes, just what one is your fave vibe)

Advice Needed Ink peeling off holographic vinyl prints (Epson EcoTank ET-2851). Do I need to laminate?

I'm printing cards for my two kids on an Epson EcoTank ET-2851 inkjet. I love the print quality on holographic vinyl sheets (a generic brand from Amazon), but the ink takes a long time to dry, and even after it's dry, the ink starts peeling off at the edges when I cut the cards or the kids play with them.

In the video, the card on the left is printed on regular paper and then cold laminated (a holographic sticker sheet applied over the print). The card on the right is printed directly on holographic vinyl, which I then stuck onto a paper sheet.

What am I doing wrong? Do I also need to cold laminate the vinyl prints, or is there another way to fix this?

Quick video showing how I handle laminating single cards at a time versus full sheets! But the process is super fun and cool once you get it down. I use this to make my holos for my game gerbils and dragons tcg.

Homemade TCGs More framing updates. Also showcasing TAG's current comeback mechanic.

Post image
45 Upvotes

Hey again! I wanted to showcase more of what's been in development these past few months. Featured here is the new General card Frames. They've been updated to match the aesthetics of the new Unit Frames. I also wanted to share the current comeback mechanic in the game, the General's Special ability. Once you've reached a full charge and are at 15 or lower HP you get immediate access to this powerful one time use card. This allows a player who may have had a rough start a chance to claw back a victory. It took a lot of play testing to create abilities that didn't fully punish a player for being in a winning position, but also offered enough of a boost to help a player who is falling behind. Each General will have 2 Specials to pick from to increase deck building opportunities. (:

Advice Needed Designing a FFA, Draft-first game: what to keep in mind?

I would like to design a TCG (or, rather, ECG, but I guess it fits here nonetheless) whose main gameplay mode is limited play, more specifically (cube) draft.

Specifically, what I'm thinking of is a 4-player, FFA, Leader-based game that's easy to pick-up. Some design concepts that came out of these requirements are:

  • Cards should be simple to read and understand almost at a glance, because if you are new to the game and you get a 9-cards pack, it takes forever to parse 9 cards and figure out which one is better before you have to do it again and again;
    • This goes a bit against my principle of easy to pick-up, but I think keywords are a necessary evil: since the complexity cannot come from the rules but has to come from the cards, (intuitive) keywords are a good compromise to have complexity on the cards that's easy to parse.
  • All cards are resources: I think drafting games really benefit from having an in-deck resource like lands in MtG to let you "pad" your deck, and making all cards "inkable" resources like in Lorcana is one extreme of it that allows you to play very occasional cards and even more bombs than you should because you can ink them away.
    • From the above, one nice property that can follow is that you can make players play all the cards they drafted, skipping the deckbuilding part.
  • I'm very undecided on the win condition. I would like a personal wincon (e.g., "gain 20 Lore" or "collect 6 unicorns in your stable", etc...) to minimize kingmaking, and I think I like the idea of "you win if your win condition is met at the start of your turn" (ala Keyforge), so that you need to expose yourself to attacks from 3 people before winning, so you need to have a very solid win condition (or some way to win at instant speed just before your turn).
    • On the other hand, the more personal the wincon is, the more this could turn into a single-player experience until the turn in which you are about to win, so there needs to be some incentive to attacking other players before the end of the game.
  • I'm also undecided on turn structure. The more classical in 4-players, I feel like the classical "you take your whole turn, then pass" might be a tad too slow. I'm thinking of leaning into the direction of "you have 1 action per turn" and use that to encourage explicit synergies like "after you play this card, you may play another yellow card" or "after you play this card, you may play another human", etc... to lead into big turns where you drop a lot of stuff after setting up your hand.

Is there anything else I should keep in mind early in the design? Do you have notes/tips about the above?

Advice Needed Need help with resource naming

I'm building my TCG around 6 different resources, each one representing a concept that humans move toward. For 4 of them I have found a proper name I think: Power, Knowledge, Unity, Faith.

But I cannot figure out a matching name for the last two. At the moment they are: Blood and Gold.

As I'm not a native speaker, I'd like to hear opinions from natives on how these sound, and if you would have better propositions maybe.

Edit: thanks for the suggestions, I'm now thinking about Wealth instead of Gold and Wrath/Destruction/Chaos instead of Blood. I still need to ponder over these

Advice Needed eta gameplay for my card game Summon Gate on tabletop sim

goal of the game, reduce your opponents 3 heros to 0 health.

Units attack units to clear lanes for heros to fight heros.

When attacking the defender can play a trigger from their extra deck to the trigger zone by tapping a hero of the same color.

units have a size from 1-3.

Heros have a plane and a plane limit.

Planes are abilities that effect units in play while the hero is untapped.

Plane limit is for the zone in front of each hero (the limit is 2 in basic format).

At he the start of your turn you place the top 3 cards of your deck faceup into your summon gate as gate pieces, then draw 3 cards.

Gate pieces reduce a units size when played if they share the same color.

Units have to have a soul beneath them to be played.

A soul is a card from your hand facedown underneath your unit equal to its current size when played (min 1) (a soul is blank and has no text).

IK the gameplay looks fast but its all i could do to shorten the video.

Advice Needed Looking for Card Layout advice for my TCG!

Hey y’all! I wanted to thank everyone for the positive responses to the first post on my homemade tcg project! I had seen a couple of the comments were mixed on the template I have, so I’m looking for critique on the established card template. This is something I’ve struggled with during the initial planning phase as well and am satisfied with what I’ve come up with, and I want to build upon it while keeping the simplicity! I’m currently using Canva on mobile to design it at this time.

Advice Needed What's the Best Way to Playtest?

As the title says, I'm asking what's the best way to playtest cards. I can print and cut them out but I'm a lazy bum and don't want to do that. So what are the best alternatives to do so?

I used to love commander but have found games to be too long, cards too confusing, too much new product, and turns just becoming a mess

Been slowly making a draft-able free-for-all like commander but you accrue points instead of reducing life totals, so no one can be taken out of the game early. These are cards made this past week

You gain resources from playing creatures and use those resources to use wizard abilities

(Wizard avatar Pic not included, the art for the wizard was done by a friend and i don't have their permission yet to post it)

Everything is drawn on my phone with HiPaint by me

I'm interested in doing some art for homemade TCG's. Not looking to make money. I don't mind doing it for free as it gives me a reason to do art. I will though however work at my own pace and will use my style to interpret your ideas. I have included a few examples of my style. I work in watercolors, sharpie, gel pens, and acrylic markers. DM if you'd like to have something done.
