Mod Announcement Owning A Hedgehog Reality Check

Since hedgehog owners consistently buy hedgehogs without setting reasonable expectations here are some expectations to set. Adapted/expanded from u/ArcadeRivalry's post.

  • Don't believe social media. Every single one I see there are obviously ridiculously posed pictures, maybe it's just me but I refuse to believe one could stay still for that long.
  • Hedgehog are spiked covered prey animals prone to anxiety. While belly rub/cuddle posts get a lot of attention they are the exception due to good breeding/luck not the rule. It is very possible a hedgehog will never be comfortable being handled even after concerted effort.
  • If you want to bond you need to put in a lot of commitment, patience and time to socialize them. I've seen a lot of people in groups I'm in need to re-home a hog before the first year as they can't put the time in. You need at least an hour a day socializing but realistically a lot more for them to be comfortable around you and others. We recommend getting a snuggle sack or putting them in your hoodie pouch to spend time together.
  • You need a specialist vet. A lot of places might not have an exotic animal vet near you. This is vital. So make sure you have to this.
  • It may not be legal to own hedgehogs in your area.
  • You need heating to ensure they don't hibernate.
  • You will likely be spiked, bitten and pooped on. It can be really really disheartening being spiked, hissed at or even bitten when you feel like you've made progress. Huffing and popping are natural, they are scaredy little animals.
  • Hedgehogs salivate frothily on themselves when they like scents, males often have "boy time", they poop a lot, have terrible sight and will bite things that smell yummy/interesting, and require consistent cage cleanings.
  • They are carnivores, while feeding fruits/vegetables can often be done safely, please feed them mainly meat-based foods ( cat food, insects, etc.)
  • Since they have very limited vision they operate mainly on smell and are at risk of falling/walking off elevated areas. It is wise to assume they are making decisions based on what they smell rather than just mainly what they see. They will still try to climb and are prone to hurting themselves climbing horizontal cage bars.
  • It is very likely they will dislike baths and nail trimming. We recommend trimming nails during foot bath time when they can't curl up or just holes in a towel to put their legs through.
  • Hedgehogs should not be housed together. High likelihood of fighting or babies.
  • We recommend heavy water bowls or chicken nipple bottles as ball water bottles can hurt them.

If you know what you are getting into, they are the most wonderful creatures ever and bring many people on this sub joy. If you feel like your hedgehog "hates" you they are just being their grumpy/terrified selves! You may be lucky and form a close bond.

Bro got nerfed with eye proptosis over a year ago. He’s been alright but still a little asshole.

One thing I’ve been wondering is if it was a good idea to switch from bedding to dog pads. Because since then he’ll only go underneath them and get them all wadded up. I’m not sure if I’d be able to train him since he’s an adult and was always used to bedding. Should I just switch back?

SPLOOT! My baby is turning 5

Post image

My baby is turning 5, I am doing my best to make her senior life as comfortable as possible. Last winter I bought a heat mat for under her sleeping bag and she loves it, sploot all day, everyday. (Yes she also has a heat lamp with her own thermostat).

To encourage her to walk I dim the lights/darken her terrarium at fixed hours and wake her up, otherwise she will just stay on the heat mat. 😅 gotta work those old bones for osteogenesis and what not.

I have been realizing this year but also last year that this might be her last fall with me due to her old age😭 it makes me incredibly sad but also incredibly motivated to keep her comfortable and healthy as possible.

I think this is going to make this my official hedgehog community. We adopted Quilliam (i know i know probably overdone) Sunday!

He’s a wee lil guy still only about 180 grams (6weeks) I don’t think the breeder introduced the wheel yet as she told me to give it a few days to make sure he was eating. When I put it in there he didn’t seem familiar with it. He definitely used it the first two nights, but last night I’m pretty sure he slept all night. I had the stomach bug so I was up often and he was always in his hiding spot. Should I worry? Or is he just still adapting?

Question Hedgehog with No Teeth - Can't Eat Bugs

I adopted an owner surrendered hedgehog from a pet store. We had no idea at the time that he didn't have teeth, we only knew that he was really small and someone had cut the points off all his quills. He had been at the pet store a few days before we got him and they never noticed his teeth so I don't think he ate while there. They told us the former owner said he was 7 months old.

To eat, his food has to be soaked in water and super soft. He struggles with eating bugs because he can't chew and he tends to just spit them out.

Would dehydrated bugs have the same nutritional value to him? Or should we put him on fiber & a hedgehog multivitamin? He has a vet appointment today but I wanted to get opinions from seasoned owners too.

Question Heating in Tropical Country

Hi! So, I live in a tropical country, but I always have the AC on (skin condition reasons). I was thinking of getting a Ceramic heater and a thermostat, but I was getting warnings of it being a fire hazard. I'm genuinely scared of setting the house on fire, but I know I have to find a safe source of heat for my hedgehog.

//Side note: I don't have a hedgehog yet. I want to set up its enclosure before I get one, so I'm doing my research 🫡

After refusing to be near me for about a month, I feel like Snowball has accepted me. However, he now identifies as a bracelet.

I swear, anytime I pick him up, he ends up coming to my wrist and just staying like this

Question Im a bit worried about my hedgie

Hi my hedgehog is almost 4 months old and I took him to the vet 2 weeks ago because his tattered ears lead me to suspect he had mites. Vet said there were no mites but treated the ears for mites anyways since the pet store didnt confirm if they've been treated or not. He got dewormed and hes been on a medication to treat a stomach parasite. I thought all was well. The two weeks came and went and he looked fine. But recently tonight he began frantacly itching, hes been scratching his back half like from the waist down. Im just really concerned because hes already gotten treated for mites I dont think theres any way he'd have them? I cant tell if hes just irritated from quilling or if its something severe. Im just really worried about him.

Update : he doesnt scratch during the day? I held him in the snuggle sack for maybe 2 and a half hours and he didnt scratch at all. If im under the right impression doesn't mites cause a relentless itch day or night? Maybe my baby doesn't have mites and its just quilling?

Answered Question Surprise Hedgehog? UPDATE

Thankyou all so much for your suggestions! I still haven't had the chance to get new stuff for the enclosure, but I did my best with what I have around.

I somehow didn't see that the tank had a strip thermometer on it, and so I can verify that the enclosure is warm enough. somewhere between 75-78 degrees F.

I moved the enclosure to my desk to make it easier to reach and clean. It's definitely not ideal as it's right next to my cintiq which can get bright (hence the scarf I taped to the side) and it doesn't get as much sun as the dresser. I'll get a properly sized enclosure asap.

I swapped the pine paper bedding with some towels (not fleece, but I'll try to find some) and used an old medical supply container as a temporary litter box. They keep flipping it, but its the best I've got. I have to reset the enclosure each morning because they love to redecorate and nothing I have is heavy enough to keep the litter from getting scattered. I kept the box just because they need some kind of hide, but I want to replace it asap as I'm worried about bacteria.

Removing the previous litter was scary for her, but I think it helped them get used to me and they soon started calming down back quickly whenever I moved and scared them. They won't let me pet them just yet, but they'll sniff and lick my hand/fingers if I'm still enough. I also got bit a couple times but not hard enough to draw blood. I think they just smelled lunch on my fingers and got curious/hungry.

The hedgehog came with some scabs and have been scratching their sides and belly a lot, so as soon as they're comfortable letting me pick them up, I'll give them an oat bath like some people suggested.

My #1 priority is the CHE with a thermometer that connects to it, to make sure the temperature stays stable, a running wheel because they're woefully understimulated (all I had to provide was a bisected paper towel roll which they've already pressed flat) new hides, a heavier litter tray, fleece bedding, and a bigger enclosure once I can afford it.

I'm unemployed and can't really keep a full time job, mostly for medical reasons, so I have to rely on my parents for the hedgie's supplies and stuff, (which I suppose is warranted since I didn't expect a pet) but I've made decent money through art commissions this year so hopefully I can start that back up again and make more. I hate asking for people to buy me stuff.

I'm fairly certain they're a girl, but haven't been able to thoroughly check. Currently, my favorite potential names are Winnie, Tibby, and Honey. Any other names are welcome. They're easily startled still but are very curious and brave once the initial panic has worn off, kind of rambunctious and opinionated, and I really hope to get to know her more!

Again, Thankyou everyone for your input, suggestions, resources, and encouragement. Even more would be greatly appreciated! I was so sure that I was going to fail at this and be a terrible owner, but I feel a little more confident and determined now. I just need to do what I can to improve their conditions whenever I can. I can do this!

Discussion Hedgehog and Friends alternative??

Post image

So... my family ruined my birthday surprise of getting a new hedgie! I finally feel at a point where I'm okay with getting one again after our previous hedge passed from WHS. I supported the company Hedgehog and Friends since we really liked their products. What are people using for their hedgies? I'm stoked to have another little buddy to add to the family.
