Rules Updates and link to Sub Wiki

Hello Western Slope!

Just wanted to let you know of changes to moderation on the subreddit. We are working to make the subreddit rules clearer as well as clean up the sticky posts and such. We are also adding some additional automated features.

Most of what we are doing can be found in the wiki here:

https://www.reddit.com/r/grandjunction/wiki/index

A few of the highlights:

  • Clarification of the sub rules
  • Expanded sub wiki
  • Moving to GJ FAQ is relocated to the Wiki
  • Planning to add an auto responder in moving posts directing them to the wiki
  • Added BotBouncer to automate removal of known and suspect bot accounts

Please let us know if you have any questions or constructive input on anything we can add to the wiki.

Sincerely,

A Note from the Mod Team About Political Threads

Hello GJ Community. It's us, your friendly Mod Team. Just a quick note as we are getting closer to the election. There are several political threads and bound to be an increasing number as we get close to the election. Please know, that we are being somewhat lenient right now on the discussions, but we are still watching for rule breaking.

If things become too much of a handful, we will go scorched earth on political posts and immediately close them. Posts may be locked or removed if the comment section gets out of hand. We will do our best not to take this action since this is supposed to be a place of discussion. If your comment is removed by moderators, please consider this a warning. Repeated warnings will result in a permanent ban from the sub.

As always, egregious violations of the rules are an immediate ban.

We don't necessarily want to do this, but we also don't have all the spare time in the world to read every political argument. Keep it civil and report any rule breaking and we will keep up as best we can.

Grand Junction deserves better than political slogans. šŸ‡ŗšŸ‡ø

Whether you’re Republican, Democrat, or somewhere in between, most of us want the same basic things: affordable groceries, reasonable housing, good-paying jobs, and healthcare that doesn’t bankrupt us.
Trump promised to make life more affordable, but tariffs can raise costs for American businesses and consumers, and tax cuts that disproportionately benefit wealthy Americans deserve serious scrutiny. Meanwhile, cuts to public programs can hit working families and rural communities especially hard.
Here on the Western Slope, we shouldn’t blindly defend any politician just because we like their party. Trump isn’t above criticism, and neither are Democrats. If a policy hurts ordinary Americans, we should be willing to call it out.
Grand Junction isn’t a campaign prop. It’s our home. We deserve policies that actually improve our lives, not another round of slogans telling us everything is great while families struggle to make ends meet.
So let’s talk about policies, results, and accountability—not political team sports.
What has Trump actually done that has made life more affordable for working families here in Western Colorado? Give me specific policies and measurable results, not just promises or insults toward the other side.

Fed up with r/Colorado

I’m tired of the Colorado subreddit being a place for just pictures and mainstream media.

So I created a new sub r/ColoradoV2. A subreddit for the people of Colorado! Please check it out!

I’m trying to create a place for respectful discourse of important topics that don’t meet r/Colorado’s ā€œstandardsā€. And other misc Colorado topics that would not be allowed.

Anyone seen any green chili roaster's?

As the title says, has anyone seen any green chili roasters around town? Idk if it's the right time of year for them but I feel like it's around fall that they are around.

Local Adult Soccer/Basketball

Hey there, just moved in a month ago, and would love to find some local rec leagues in town. I like to play soccer and basketball, wondering if there are any pick up games that happen regularly, especially for futsol, as it’s getting colder outside. Any help is helpful, thanks!

It only takes $680 dollars to buy a city council member!

Cody Kennedy, Ben Van Dyke, Robert Ballard, and Laurel Lutz all recieved campaign money from the Relators of America super PAC.

The Home Builders of America (HBA), is part of this and now has a committee that is getting housing regulations rolled back under the guise of affordability. None of the proposed changes actually make a difference in the cost of building.

Staff members have been verbally abused by people on this committee (which is illigetimate according to town charter). It has lead to 11 staffers to quit. And now they will not be filling these vacancies, so there is no civil servant to fact check and make recommmedations.

We need to stop Developers from steamrolling our government. Time to recall some candidates and expose these greedy. developers!

Started a dads group in GJ. First park day is Sat Nov 14 at the Lincoln Park playground, come hang out

I've been wanting to meet more dads around here and couldn't find a group for it, so I started one.

It's simply just dads meeting other dads. No dues, no membership, no agenda. Just getting together every so often at a park or on an easy trail. Bring the kids or come on your own.

Next one: Park Day at the Lincoln Park playground
Saturday, Nov 14, 10am to noon

No RSVP needed, just show up. I'll bring donuts and sports drinks. If you want to add it to your calendar or let me know you're coming (totally optional), it's all at gjdads.com.

We had our first get-together for Halloween and it was a good time. Would love to see more of you there.

Fuzzy's Tacos

Hi. Tried out Fuzzy's Tacos today. Figured I'd give them a bit of time to get their feet under them before giving them a fair shake.

Well... I won't be back. Queso had zero flavor. Their "seasoning" on the chips is just red chili powder. the beans were straight from a can. The Elote wasn't... terrible, but nothing to write home about. I got the classic tacos with 'grilled' chicken. dry ass chick, very little flavor. wife got the baja taco and the steak taco. steak was well seasoned and tasted good but the baja fish taco was a chunk of deep fried fish and a squirt of sauce.

For literally $5 a taco, it left VERY much to be desired. For having "Tacos" in the name, there were scant few tacos on the menu. 100% not worth it and just one more reason eating out in GJ sucks.

Back to your regularly scheduled doom scroll.

Flock is lying to us: hackers physically pulled one off a roadway, took it apart, copied its storage and handed the files over to journalists.

And what they found? One camera had generated roughly 1.6 MILLION images of about 50,200 vehicles in just 21 days.

One camera. 1.6 million images, and this isn't simply a license-plate camera taking one picture of your car and moving on.

Researchers found that a typical passing vehicle generated around 28 images, with some producing more than 100. The camera also had software specifically designed to detect people, vehicles, bicycles and license-plate-like objects.

Physically getting hold of ONE camera provided researchers with a remarkable look inside the system. They recovered 27,321 short video clips. They also found software capable of detecting people.

It was constantly processing what passed in front of it. Vehicles. People, bicycles, license plates, bumper stickers and other identifying graphics.

In one bizarre example, the system apparently mistook an American flag patch on a motorcycle saddlebag for a license plate. And the camera's logs showed more than 27,000 ā€œno space left on deviceā€ errors while trying to store full-resolution images.

Oh, and buried in the logs? A message that popped up roughly every two minutes: ā€œWho's a good boy?!ā€ Because even the surveillance state has a sense of humor.

But jokes aside, here's the bigger issue: Flock isn't just one camera.

Its system connects cameras into a national network that allows participating agencies to search vehicle movements across jurisdictions. WIRED found that records from one city's cameras were accessible to more than 2,000 agencies, including police departments, colleges, airports and a federal inspector general's office.

That's the part people need to understand. We're not talking about a camera that simply says: ā€œHey, that car ran a red light.ā€ we have had those for decades. We're talking about technology capable of creating massive searchable records of where vehicles have been, and increasingly, everything else that's happening in the camera's field of view.

And once that information exists? The question becomes: Who can search it? Why are they searching it? How long is it kept? Who else can access it? And what happens when the technology does something nobody was told it could do?

That's not a conspiracy theory. That's a regulatory and governance question. And now, thanks to one dismantled camera, journalists and researchers have gotten a much better look at what these things are actually doing.

Especially since they are putting these cameras at schools, public parks, and near neighborhoods.

deflockmesacounty.org

Call officials, write letters and emails. Deflock Mesa County has a simple writer setup to help you write an email to city and county officials. Keep showing up to town halls and asking about this. Do not back down and just get used to it.

Never judge a technology by the good its makers say it can do, judge it by what it does and what it will do in the wrong hands.

Local art community?

Is there a subreddit for artists in the county/valley? Or a discord server or something?

I’m just curious about if there’s like a central online forum or community with information about art events across the valley; art shows, calls for art, workshops, art talks, shared studio spaces, etc etc.

I’d like to get involved but I’m not a student and idk where else to look besides gallery websites but they don’t seem to keep them updated very well/till the last minute from what I’ve been seeing.

My schedule isn’t impulse/last minute friendly, which makes it hard to do stuff if I can’t plan ahead. Especially if I want to enter my art into shows.

Fiber artists of GJ, where do you get your yarn?

Pretty much as the caption says, I’m a knitter and crocheter living in Grand Junction for school and I’m looking for places to get yarn. Obviously there are the big box options like Micheal’s and Hobby Lobby, but I struggle to find natural fibers such as wool at these locations plus I like to support local businesses. I know online is an option but I love being able to feel and handle my yarn before purchase.

What is the best way to find a good home to rehome a dog in GJ?

I have a dog who I am unfortunately no longer able to give a happy and fulfilling life. He's a mutt with some herding/working dog in him and I'm usually at work. He doesn't get the proper space he needs in my house after moving and it has resulted in him lashing out at my senior dog and causing an injury.

I really want to find him a good new home. An owner who has the experience and space to care for him, maybe no other pets. But I don't know where to look. Please be gentle as this is an incredibly difficult and heartbreaking decision for me. I've had this dog for 6 years and I've exhausted my resources and mental capacity, I'm out of options.

So how can I responsibly rehome him? What sites or resources are available to help find someone who can take him and how can I get to ensure he goes to a good home? Maybe even as a farm dog or something? Help is very appreciated
