Not to mention the fact he'll be in his 70s when his kid is graduating college. I get that with all the money he has, he can likely pay to keep himself in good health but it's still a very different experience for your kid - I have a friend whose dad was 52 when she was born and even in terms of energy/stamina, there was stuff he couldn't necessarily do that younger dads could, while she was growing up.

6

u/SheAsks0 Aug 12 '26

I find this really unfair for the child. I also wanted to include his wife but she’s an adult at this time… she is capable of deciding and consenting to this. However, I feel that male/female involved in relationships with 15+ year gaps have deeper issues to resolve (individually).

u/Green-Client4772 Aug 13 '26

This is why I'm DESPARATE to become a dad in the next few years. I'm already 27 and not too far off from the risks starting to become apparent. And that's not even getting to the fact that the window of opportunity for marriage is already closing in my circles.

Help.

My mom was 40 when she had me on accident with my dad who was 34 years older than me. By the time I was a teen he had a stroke and turned blind. I was only like 6. At nursing homes for months visiting. Then he passed away when I was 9. I never really had a relationship with him, which is fine because I don't grieve him. But I realized later on I have no male figures, and my dad was sorting of a narcissist, which have made me strong because my mom went over the deep end and that's where I wish I had one. Having both parents being older like that feels unfair too.

u/farmkidLP Aug 10 '26

Maybe too hot of a take, but I don't think there's a magical cut off where age gaps are not ever an issue anymore. Its obviously not creepy the way dating an 18 year old would be, but I do think it can still contribute to an off power balance, especially if there are other factors in the mix like gender and fame.

25

u/VFTM Aug 10 '26

Thank you, it’s always super weird to not be with a peer. I don’t find it as problematic as they get older, but it is still super weird.

26

u/LordyIHopeThereIsPie Aug 10 '26

Anything over 15 years is too much if there's a new baby in the mix imo.

11

u/eareyou Aug 11 '26

Why weird? I have a 13 year age gap. It’s a normal, healthy, loving relationship. Never really think about it or notice much other than his aging and health problems that go with it. But know plenty of young people worse off?

Well… I am aging and I have health problems as well? Just in different areas. I just have to cook with less fats or salts to help with keeping him healthy and well which isn’t something I have to deal with yet. I’m far from his nurse. Even if I was, I would feel blessed to care for someone I love and who has been a wonderful partner.

We have children together. We have a beautiful life of love and community. And he has supported my career as it’s very busy one. I’m grateful.

I dunno, as a 45 year old, I find some men in their 50s and 60s more mature than men my own age. I have always enjoyed hanging out with my elders though, even when I was a teen.

34

u/Equipmunk Aug 10 '26

Do older fathers cause more risky pregnancies for the mother?

That does make sense, but I’ve never heard it spoken about before.

related unrelated general info i like to bring up: the father's health can also significantly raise your chance of getting preeclampsia. the father just needs to have 2 metabolic factors to increase risk (in healthy women) by 21%

list of metabolic factors:

  • depression
  • hypertension
  • diabetes mellitus
  • obesity
  • hyperlipidemia
  • chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
  • cancer

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33895399/

also, the father's family history of preeclampsia increases the risk as well.

u/OkDimension2558 Aug 10 '26

I don’t even think that’s too much of a problem, the guy is wealthy. Money solves a lot of the issues of having late in life children. It’s something my partner and I are struggling with right now.

25

u/HoggingHedges Aug 10 '26

But money can’t resolve the genetic conditions that are higher risk and likelihood that comes with the age of the dad

I think they just wanted to point out that Jon Hamm severely asssaulted a pledge at his fraternity.

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/people/jon-hamm-mad-men-actor-charged-for-violent-fraternity-hazing-10167016.html

tw: descriptions of violence

A 1991 lawsuit claimed that Hamm had become “mad, I mean really mad” when Mr Sanders had been unable to recite a list of details he was supposed to have memorised about members of the fraternity. “He rears back and hits me left-handed, and he hit me right over my right kidney, I mean square over it,” Mr Sanders alleged. “Good solid hit and that, that stood me right up.”

Hamm and fellow fraternity members then allegedly lifted Mr Sanders into the air by his underwear and “pulled it back and forth in a sawing motion”, before Hamm set the pledge’s jeans alight, telling him he could not extinguish the fire with his hand, but must instead “blow it out”. In its 1991 report on the incident a Texas newspaper, The San Antonio Light, said Mr Sanders was beaten with a paddle and led “around the fraternity house with the claw of a hammer beneath his genitals”.

The student claimed he sought medical treatment and left the university. An arrest warrant for Hamm was issued in 1993 and the future Don Draper was charged with hazing, though he reached a deal that allowed him to complete probation without being convicted. A separate assault charge was dismissed.

Four other fraternity members were also charged with hazing and the university’s Sigma Nu chapter was closed.

u/wickedsuccubi Aug 11 '26

He'll be 73 if the kid graduates high school

u/HoopoeBirdie Aug 11 '26

173

u/glitterandvinegar Aug 10 '26

To be honest, I don’t find the age gap here objectionable so much as I think men trying to procreate as they are pushing 60 to be inherently selfish and almost always motivated by immaturity, ego or boredom.

403

u/Eyebronx Aug 10 '26

And he openly said for years that he doesn’t want children ijbolll. Men are so predictable

Let’s keep it a buck: The vast majority of the time, “someone” means “men.”

Unfortunately, after a certain point, we simply do not have that luxury. It might be a hot take, but that’s why I think women have to make that decision for ourselves, and not for a relationship.

u/laboratoryfox Aug 10 '26

As someone with a dad that was 50 when I came around I can unfortunately confidently say that he's setting that child up for a lot of emotional issues and grief

61

u/tr15k Aug 10 '26

My dad was 53 when I was born and I’m good. Personally I’m very glad to have been born and can confidently say I don’t have “emotional issues” from having an old dad. And while I’m sure there will be plenty of grief when he dies I’m 40 and have had a number of friends lose their much younger fathers before me because life comes with no guarantees.

45

u/emthehuff Aug 10 '26

I’m in the same boat as you. My dad was 53 when I was born and he actually died last year after having Parkinson’s for years but I am not at all mad at him for having me at 53. I loved having an older dad. He was established, confident, and supportive in a way unique to being an older parent, in my opinion. I was obviously was sad when he died but like you said, I have many friends who have lost parents. Loss is a part of life.

1

u/GenXer845 23d ago

My dad was 40 when I was born (mom 32) and I always had older parents compared to my peers. My parents are still alive whilst a lot of my peers who had younger parents are now dead. My dad is now 83 nearly 84 and visits me every 2-3 months (drives 6 hours to see me) and my mom is 77.

29

u/LilMissy1246 Aug 10 '26

I feel like there was another male celeb that is in his 70s with a much younger wife (remarried) and has like, a 3 and 7 year old daughter? Was he a singer maybe…? Can’t remember. Father watched a movie about him a while back on Netflix

108

u/the_ginger_nextdoor1 Aug 10 '26

Robert De Niro had a kid at 79.

138

u/amurderofcrows Aug 10 '26

And Pacino had one at 83. You’re never too old!*

*yes you fucking are

45

u/itsnotme_mrsiglesias Aug 10 '26

11

u/srkaficionado Aug 10 '26

I feel like rich people play by different rules. I’m saying this as someone whose niblings were all made through IVF: comfortably middle class(in the low $200k income range) and it was eye opening. Apparently, if you have all the money, you can now check that egg(ovum?) for disease markers and all the things and even select certain things. Said niblings had nannies until they were primary school age: even with kindergarten, the nanny was still there to get them from school, take them to school and all the things.

Can you imagine what millionaires with insane wealth and access can select for? They’ll Just have an army of helpers and nanny people everywhere.

So, for us poors, yes you can be too old but for the mega rich? Nothing science and money can’t fix.

32

u/beetlejuuce good luck with bookin that stage u speak of Aug 10 '26

No amount of money can defeat time. Try though they might to live forever, even the richest people on earth have a finite amount of time. With incredible luck and care, De Niro and Pacino could get twenty or so years with their youngest kids. Young people can die any time too, sure, but it's guaranteed to be soon when you're in your eighties. Having a kid and knowing you won't get much time with them is pretty unethical imo.

Who said I was endorsing it? I don’t know these people and I’m not here to approve or disapprove of their lives and decisions.

Just giving another perspective as someone who saw this play out with family members who aren’t even anywhere near millionaire status.

2

u/GlassPomoerium controversies: girl Aug 10 '26

« You can select certain things »

I’m almost afraid to ask for clarification…

3

u/srkaficionado Aug 11 '26

I can ask them. One set of parents is very open about their journey because mummy is pushing 50 and has a literal baby(not even close to 1) due to the joys and miracle of IVF. And their career is centered around genetics so they know all the things too.

I’m just glad to have niblings to play with no matter how and when they showed up.

-3

u/BillBongBatz Aug 10 '26

And Pacino.

Both have had healthy children with much younger women.

I'm not saying it's right but it did happen.

9

Mick Jagger's youngest child was born when he was 73. For context his oldest child Karis is 46 years older than his youngest. Deveraux (the youngest) has nieces and nephews who are older than him.

14

u/withbellson Aug 10 '26

Feel like that could apply to a lot of dudes, TBH.

He wasn't in his 70s, but Paul Simon had three kids with Edie Brickell when he was in his 50s (they have a 24-year age gap). He's thankfully managed to still be alive at 84 so his kids have had him around until they reached adulthood -- not that anyone wants to lose a loved parent at any point, but a parent dying when you're a kid must be uniquely awful.

My husband was in his early 50s when we had ours and I was in my late 30s. Obviously none of us are guaranteed a set amount of years with our kids, but I will grant this: you do a lot more mental math about "how old I'll be when Daughter [major life milestone]" when you start out older, and I know it weighs on him more than it would if he'd had her at 35.

5

u/snapdragonette85 Aug 13 '26

My dad was 52 when I was born (mom was two weeks shy of 40) — he was a great dad, definitely my more solid, grounded, loving parent.

He died suddenly (brain aneurysm) when he was 78 and I was 26. I wish I’d had more time with him, had the experience of growing into adulthood with a supportive dad (like my older siblings experienced). But I would never trade the 26 years I had with him for “more time” with a different dad.

-7

u/srkaficionado Aug 10 '26

I was expecting a comment like this; I wasn’t disappointed. Let me crawl back under my rock with my husband who’s 6 years younger.

22

u/lilyhazes Aug 10 '26 edited Aug 10 '26

That is sad. A vasectomy is a lot less invasive than a full on hysterectomy. Plus it messes up with your hormones like A LOT. ETA: Did not know that.

41

No, a hysterectomy doesn't mess with your hormones. That only happens if they take your ovaries too and those aren't included in hysterectomies. Please don't spread misinformation. Source: had a complete hysterectomy.

I kind of agree. My ex didn’t want children, I did, so we broke up. Years later he has a child and I don’t have any, I kind of changed my mind, as did he. There’s enough reasons to not like or support Jon Hamm, obviously, but this is not one of them.

18

u/idkman1000 Aug 10 '26

I don't feel great about judging a dude's choice to have a kid by assuming he "denied" his ex that "right".

People did the same thing with John Mulaney and his ex. There was so much emphasis on her "wasting her childbearing years" like her life was over bc she didnt have a kid she never said she wanted. Its so off putting.

24

u/fungibitch Aug 10 '26

No, it was the other way around (she didn't want kids). He's still gross.

1

Can you clarify - did Jennifer want kids and Jon said no?

215

u/Sleepy-Giraffe947 Please Abraham, I am not that man Aug 10 '26

Hope he treats his child better than the kid he hazed in university.

18

u/Cocacoleyman Aug 10 '26

While I agree, I wonder if people will ever forgive him. If he went to jail for some odd years and “paid” for what he did, would people forgive him? Sorry I don’t support him but I find it fascinating this kind of thing. He’s 57 so this happened…..37 years ago? 20-21 is hardly a full grown adult. Do we believe that people never change? We all know that a good person can become bad over time, but it seems like no one believes someone bad (or one that committed a bad act) can become good. I’m saying this without knowing what kind of man he is now but I just wonder what people think.

85

u/zoethesteamedbun Aug 10 '26

It’s because of the way he responded to it when it was brought up, he called the whole affair a “bummer” and that was as far as his accountability went. You can’t forgive someone who isn’t sorry.

3

u/Cocacoleyman Aug 10 '26

Hey fair enough. It was more of a thought in that we are all so prone to never forgive things that people did decades ago (short of nazi type shit) that we may ignore all the good someone does later in life. But yeah, if he shows no remorse than that is pretty disappointing and maybe I should’ve done a bit more research.

20

u/Culinary_Fruit_Salad call me gal gadot cuz idk how to act rn Aug 10 '26

has Jon hamm done any good in his life after the incident? I only know him for setting someone on fire and genuinely don't know if he's turned himself around

49

u/chris_r1201 Aug 10 '26

I don't know about you, but torturing someone when you are 20-21 years old is bad even if your frontal lobe hasn't developed fully yet. That is plenty of life experience to have some common decency and enpathy

5

u/Cocacoleyman Aug 10 '26

Yeah no that’s why I’m asking the question. He’s basically lived 2 more lifetimes since then. Can he not have become good? (Although others have pointed out that he hasn’t shown much, if any, remorse). But insert any proxy. I just hate to judge someone on a single act and I think choosing to believe that they’re forever bad afterwards is a terrible way of viewing the world. If that were the case, then the majority of people would have a bad reputation. Most everyone has skeletons. I mean this happened almost 4 decades ago.

I guess a better question is, is there anything he could do to warrant forgiveness from people? Apologize? Go to jail? Receive the same punishment he doled out? Or is there no forgiveness?

25

u/AfterCopy1167 Aug 10 '26

I think apologizing would be a start, which he hasn't done yet. He's just not a good person. Some ppl can do bad things and still be good ppl or become good ppl. He's not one of them.

8

u/AtriCrossing Friends with Ms. Rachel Aug 11 '26

I think a good way to explore this is instead to think, "What would someone do if they are truly remorseful and recognizes the severity and impact of their actions? Especially after becoming famous?"

I would expect Hamm to not only apologize, but to use his fame and wealth to uplift and profile organizations that advocate against hazing, that support victims of sexual assault, and to speak out on male-on-male torture and sexual violence.

I think that kind of work is what it would take for a person with a conscience to be able to live with themself, so that's what I would expect.

16

u/Gayfetus Aug 10 '26

For me, it's not about forgiveness, 'cause that's not really my place.

It's just that knowing what he's capable of scares me on a visceral level. I can't unknow the fact that he fractured a man's spine, or used a claw hammer to torture someone's genitals. When I see him on the screen, I see someone who was, at least at one point, someone who delighted in creating immense pain and lifelong suffering in another human being.

Knowing this also makes me doubt that people are really ever safe around him. So yes, I don't want to see him and I don't want him to be in positions of power and influence.

15

u/yothisismetrying Aug 10 '26

My dad had me when he was 25. Basically did not participate in my life for the next 50 years. I’d be ok with an older dad (with money) who showed up for 20.

Reminder that Jon Hamm tortured someone in college during a hazing in his frat. Torture torture, not some silly games. He used a clawhammer, clammed it to the victims testicles, and dragged him across the floor. He also set the person on fire.

Write a book, Jennifer!

Hope he isn't violent to the wife or the baby. He was sadistically violent when hazing a classmate in college. Its sick and if he wasn't a white man he would still be in prison.

He should hope that nobody does to his child what he did to his university class mate

Jon Hamm, the guy who tortured a guy?

No wayyy I am SO surprised 🙄🙄🙄🙄

Actually just saw today that Andy Karl (Broadway actor) cheated on his Wife with someone younger and is now having his first Baby at 52 after not having kids with his first Wife.

Why are so many of them like this? Your sperm is not so amazing that you need to procreate, fuck off with that shit

Reminder that fathers over 35 are linked to poor outcomes for mother and baby, mental health issues and developmental issues like autism. Men who want to reproduce in their 50s are, frankly, selfish for inflicting this on the woman who has to turn his rancid spunk into a person and the kid she manages to make.

Knowing what we know about the increase in medical issues in children born to older men....as a society we need to shame men,  for putting their children at risk.

Let’s hope he doesn’t haze the kid

7

u/Mediocre_Access_2100 Aug 10 '26

I thought Jon Hamm hazed kids already?

*Had kids. Oops.

I know she's 38yo, but she looks like she could be his daughter, based on the article's pictures.

55 is a selfish age to have a child. Man or woman.

2

u/mncs Aug 10 '26

How old is too old for a man to have kids? 55 is obviously old for it, but what's your personal cutoff? Asking as someone with a 36 yo bf and I'm not sure we'll be in a place to have kids within the next 4 years...

u/blumingtom Aug 10 '26

I work in a fertility clinic. In our clinic we won't accept sperm donors under 44 and men over 60 can't have IVF using their sperm. Socially the question depends on resources, heath etc I don't think there is a set answer

2

u/anongirlieee Aug 12 '26

Sorry what? Why do you only accept geriatric sperm?

1

u/Informal-2005 Aug 10 '26

Your body changes a lot in your 40s. I know everyone’s different but your energy levels really do crash. Things start hurting more etc. Of course Jon Hamm will be just fine as I’m sure he’ll have an army of nannies.

2

u/Chooxie Aug 11 '26

So he is with Jennifer Westfeldt for so many years, then trades her in for a newer model and knocks her up. I feel bad for Jennifer. She was with the Hamm when his career was nothing and helped him a lot.

The same man who told everyone that marriage and kids weren‘t for him when he was with his last partner for over ten years? With a younger woman now?
Wow.
My jaw stays in place.

Ewww low quality geriatric sperm. Sorry for that kid…

1

u/ShinyPrettyFancy Aug 10 '26

he got married!? when who what

1

u/Exotic-Doughnut-6271 The delusion is mutual and I’m thriving in it Aug 10 '26

I don't know why I assumed he had kids already

1

u/goldgoldfish Aug 11 '26

This is testing my principles (ie people are allowed to do what they want with their bodies) and I have to sit with that.
