📰 News / Announcement Rule Update: "Looking for Friends" standalone posts are no longer allowed

Hey everyone,

Quick meta update regarding posts on r/Erbil.

Moving forward, individual standalone posts asking "looking for friends", "anyone want to hang out?", or similar social prompts are no longer allowed on the main feed.

The subreddit is getting cluttered with these requests, and it's becoming very repetitive.

Where to post instead: Please keep all friend-making and social networking in the [Make a Friend Megathread]. It drops every week, uses a structured template, and keeps everything organized in one place so the main feed stays clean for news, events, and discussions.

Note: New individual posts asking for friends will be removed and redirected to the megathread.

Thanks for helping keep the sub organized!

Mod Announcement: New rules regarding low-effort rants and broad political posts (Keeping r/Erbil fun)

Hey everyone,

As our community grows, we want to ensure r/Erbil remains a high-quality, useful, and welcoming space for residents, expats, and visitors alike.

Lately, the front page of the subreddit has been overwhelmed by repetitive posts, low-effort rants, and intense debates surrounding demographics, immigration, and ethnic relations. While we understand these are real-world topics that people want to discuss, the sheer volume of these posts is drowning out everything else—local news, city events, questions about neighborhoods, recommendations, and daily life in Erbil.

We are not banning these discussions entirely, but to keep the subreddit from turning into a one-topic limited space, we are introducing two new rules effective immediately:

1. No Low-Effort or Repetitive Rants

If a topic (e.g., a specific debate about demographics or immigration) has already been posted and discussed within the last 72 hours, new standalone threads on the exact same topic will be removed. Please use the search bar and contribute to existing threads rather than starting a new one every time you have a thought. Furthermore, screenshot-only posts of social media drama without constructive context will be removed.

2. Posts Must Be Directly Relevant to Erbil City

Many recent posts are broad national or regional political debates that belong on general country subreddits. If a post is about country-wide politics, broader Middle Eastern geopolitics, or general ethnic relations that do not specifically and directly impact the day-to-day running of Erbil city, it will be removed.

Where to post instead: For broad political, historical, or national discussions, please utilize r/kurdistan or r/Iraq, which are better equipped for those larger conversations.

Our goal here isn't to police opinions or suppress anyone. We just want to ensure that when someone visits r/Erbil, they see a reflection of the entire city—its food, its development, its daily challenges, its culture, and its community—not just a non-stop debate feed.

Thank you for helping us keep the sub organized and readable! Let us know if you have any questions in the comments below.

❓ Question / Advice Best apartment complex in Erbil for a furnished studio

Hey guys I need some advice 😭
I’m thinking of renting a furnished studio in Erbil and I’m kinda stuck between these places
Centro Towers
White Towers
Life Towers
Wave Avenue
Iskan Towers
My budget is around $250–350 a month
For anyone who lives in these compounds or has experience with them which one do you think is the best? Like in terms of the apartments themselves cleanliness security maintenance and just overall living experience
Also is it realistic to find a decent furnished studio in this budget or am I asking for too much lol 😭
Would really appreciate any advice or personal experiences

❓ Question / Advice Someone please explain: International Freelance Payment.

Hey,

I want to start an international freelance remote job, such as data annotations, micro-tasking, AI training, and such.

I need to know how I can establish my digital wallet from kri. I tried FIB because it could work as a neobank for digital jobs, then found out it's internationally sanctioned and will make issues for me in the future, to let's say if I ever wanted to travel abroad and they asked for my bank account.

I need to know whether (Arab Bank Iraq) works for such a purpose, as for NIB, I have issues registering, like it says, (Your data could not be sent to NIB, contact us), and it was not because of the internet or stuff, I tried it thrice.

I just gave up on NIB, and as for the Trade Bank, it's not providing such digital services as Arab Bank Iraq, I also thought of Byblos Bank, but I'm not sure.

So, I need to know if Arab Bank Iraq works if I connect it to my Payoneer account, or do you have any better options like Crypto and USDT saved in like Trust Wallet and such? Will that work? I'm not so experienced, and I need to know how I can use such money, like how to make it officially cash in kri and iraq in general.

Also, for those who have done those jobs I mentioned above, how do you think of that? What about legal video games like those in Faceit, Buff.game and such?

And how do early freelancers here in Iraq get any remote jobs at all? Because I searched a lot on the internet, and I could not find any applications. I would love to know that as well.

And are these banks secure?

Thank you!!

❓ Question / Advice how to recive money from usa or canada to my card?

I did a small freelancing job for a friend, and as a reward I am getting paid. It’s a very small amount, but how do I receive that money? My friend is either in the USA or Canada. My sister has a Qi Card, FIB (online only), Bank of Baghdad, and an Islamic Bank card. Some of them were made for her by the company for her payroll, so she has the IBAN. My parents also have NBI cards that they received to get their salaries.

I’m not sure what the easiest way is. What do I have to do to receive it?

❓ Question / Advice Going to a business trip next year, and thinking of learning kurdish, and also afraid of the war situation there.

Hi,

I am looking forward to travel to Erbil next year, I have work with some sensitive and very important government personnels in Erbil. Everyone I see tells me that I should not travel there due to the ongoing war and especially that I will likely be working in governmental areas, so they might be targeted.

Yet I searched and found that Erbil have good food, good landscapes and nature , especially in other areas of Kurdstan . So I am trying to be optimistic, and as Muslim man I belive القدر مكتوب already. I already accepted the offer to travel yet my fears always there whenever I see drone attacks in Kurdstan. I am watching the situation very closely and can see the attacks lately.

Anyways , besides this , is it hard to learn kurdish ? I belive there are several types of it as well, since I will be in Erbil what type should I learn ?

❓ Question / Advice Dentistry vs. Architecture in Kurdistan/Iraq — Which has better career opportunities for women?

First of all, I am kurdish so stop saying if you are arab js get out and blah blah blah. So I’m looking for honest advice about choosing a university major, especially from people who have studied or worked in dentistry or architecture in Iraq or the Kurdistan Region.
I’ve always dreamed of studying architecture, especially at AUK, and I genuinely love the idea of becoming an architect. However, I’m currently studying dentistry, and I’m confused about whether I should continue or pursue architecture instead.
One of my biggest concerns is my future. I’ve heard that architecture can be difficult to find work in, especially in Iraq/Kurdistan, and I’m worried about spending years studying it only to struggle to find a job. Dentistry seems like a more practical option, but I also know it requires licensing and additional requirements if I want to work abroad.
I’m a woman, so I’d also appreciate hearing about the experiences of women working in both professions.
I’d love to know:
How difficult is it to find a job after graduating in dentistry versus architecture in Kurdistan/Iraq?
Which field offers more stable employment and better long-term career growth?
What are the salaries and working conditions like for women in both fields?
Is dentistry a better option if I want to work or move abroad in the future?
Can architects from Iraq realistically build careers abroad?
If you studied either of these fields, are you happy with your decision?
Would you choose the same major again?
I’d especially appreciate advice from people with actual experience in these professions, rather than just general opinions.
Thank youuu

💡 Guide / Tip / Insight read this if you have done a root canal treatment/ دەمار بڕین

hey guys. just wanted to let you know about an opportunity in case anyone needs a dental crown. since i’m a dental student, i know that getting dental work done at private clinics can be really expensive, so this could be a good option for anyone looking for something more affordable. the treatment is supervised by experienced, skilled dentists, and the lab itself aims to use high-quality materials while keeping the cost low. if you’ve had a root canal, it’s worth asking your dentist whether a crown is recommended to protect your tooth from fracturing. if anyone is interested, feel free to tell me and i can share more details
no pressure at all, just thought i’d put this out there in case it helps someone ♡

❓ Question / Advice Need your help

Slav o rez,

Im a petroleum engineering graduate, i graduated being 1st out of 54 students with about 1 year of experience as a field engineer in the construction industry and i also have had a 3 month internship in an oil and gas company. My question is what is the only way to get into the industry in Kurdistan since it’s full of operating companies, i once participated in a exam in a company called HKN energy i passed being one the 4 people who passed it and moved to the interview just for them to say my age doesn’t fit this position which actually really hurt me and destroyed my confidence because i got everything right im sure they took somebody else using wasta. I have been trying out for other companies continuously and no company even answers me and i hear people who have less qualifications just using Wasta they get in like a spill of water which is really sad. So please if there is someone out here who can help me out to get into the industry i would really appreciate it and pray for him/her until i die because i really love this profession and its a passion not just a job for me.

Sopass!

❓ Question / Advice 16, Lived in the UK, came back for business

hi i am 16 years old, i came back to erbil before i finished my gcses (uk exams), i cameback mainly because its better to live here, considering the fact i am involved with a large tech business which is setting me up for a good future, and i have all my aunts uncles cousins in erbil.

I chose not to go to school here, because i seriously dont see a point to it, alot of people that go through school end up with bad jobs anyway, and i think i dont need it.

I cant write or read kurdish, but i can speak it fine.

If the tech business doesnt go well for me, id just go back to the UK.

What do you think? Should I go to school or pursue this work?

❓ Question / Advice People who work remotely, how did you get your first opportunity?

I'm honestly so tired of the job situation here. You go to interviews, and sometimes it feels like getting hired is more about who you know than what you can actually do. And even when you find a job, the salary is ridiculously low for the amount of work and hours they expect from you.

I've started looking for remote jobs outside Iraq, but that's been a struggle too because so many companies don't hire people from Iraq.

I know I have skills, and I'm willing to learn, but actually finding a decent opportunity feels almost impossible.

So, if you're working remotely, how did you get started? What websites did you use? How do you get paid? And do you have any advice for someone trying to get their first remote job?

I'd really appreciate any advice or personal experiences. I'm honestly just trying to find a decent opportunity
