Bi-weekly discussions #10-Samuel Beetchworth
Welcome back to another round of Bi-Weekly discussions, where we're covering the fan favorite boatman of the Loyalists, Samuel Beetchworth!
During my first playthrough, Samuel was one of my favorite members of the Loyalists. He was honest and upfront (for the most part, save for the betrayal), and if you've been doing a Low Chaos playtrhough (as I had been doing), Samuel only slipped in a little poison, not the whole thing.
Samuel's also pretty insightful about the world by the river, and about people. In a Low Chaos run, he applauds you through words about keeping a steady hand and not spilling any more blood than was absolutely necessary, while in High Chaos, he makes you feel extra bad for having chosen the path.
A shame he didn't return in Dishonored 2, but it made sense, since he was so old. He does get a mention if you pick up one of the game's collectibles in "A Long Day in Dunwall," the carved boat, along with the final mission.
But what do you think of Samuel as a character?

Subreddit Discord and Announcements
Subreddit Discord available here: https://discord.gg/YsffweB7e4
As you know, this subreddit has had its own Discord server for a few years now. Today we have rebranded the server to Dishonored Universe, which means that there are now channels for Deathloop although obviously the server is still Dishonored centric. With the recent news of a potential Dishonored 3 in the works we'd like to invite more people to join our community, so I hope to see you there soon!

Does anyone else kind of wish they had included the Clock Tower as a level?
I know it was scrapped, but it looks so cool, and I really want to test my fear of heights climbing that metal monument.

Confirmed: Antoni Gaudi furniture in Karnaca
I was doing some research for my continuing project to make my home feel like it could be in the Dishonored universe when I discovered that this chaise longue designed by Yannick Gombart...

... is a dead ringer for this chaise made by Antoni Gaudi.

Gaudi was the brilliant Spanish architect who is responsible for much of the look of modern Barcelona, famous for his recently-completed Basilica of the Sagrada Familia. He made this chaise for the Güell Palace, which he also designed, in the mid 1880s. And, yes, I will be making one.

OC the outsider visited you last night. which void power are you taking for mundane civilian life?
you wake up with glowing black eyes, smelling like cold whale oil and the void. the outsider is leaning against your dirty kitchen counter, flipping a bonecharm, and says:
"you are interesting... but also entirely too broke to cause high chaos. i will give you ONE mark, mortal. make it count."

Art I really need to start drawing more (Granny Rags, full-body)
I did a drawing of Granny's head by itself a while ago, but looking back I'm not very happy with it and decided to redo it again and add a full-body this time to make it a bit more distinct. The previous one felt a bit flat and lacked that sort of "texture-ey-ness" that I like to include in my pieces.
Tell me which character I should draw next, I'm thinking of moving away from just doing busts

What makes dishonored what it is?
I was planning to write a story like Dishonored for a game and understand the game better. What are the elements and mechanics in the game? And about the story element

Heart not showing bonecharms.
DH2 royal conservatory, I’ve just finished and checked the heart one last time and I had collected all runes and bone charms, only to see I had missed 2. I reloaded to my last safe and the finished the mission, same thing. This mission is one big mission, not split up like the clock work mansion mission, so the heart should show all runes and bone charms in the entire area no?

Finishing D1 Again...
I'm playing D1 for the probably 1000th time and am finishing it now, and I always have to laugh at Admiral Havelock describing his own epitaph. I play low chaos/Ghost/Shadow, so it's just him monologuing to dead Martin/Pendleton, and just...why does he think he'll get to chose his own epitaph? Like, Corvo is definitely going to come for him and neither of them will let him choose it...xD Like, I know it's just part of his monologue, but I find it hilarious. xD

Does Dishonored 2 get better?
I played the first three missions in the demo, then the very same missions again in the full game. At the moment i started playing The Clockwork Mansion, and finally got into Jindosh's manor. It is fully possible the game gets better. Thats what ill hope happens.
I loved the first game. Bought it off of sale and finished it in a couple weeks a while back. One of the best games ive played in years. As much as it hurts to say, i dont really like its sequel.
At its core, Dishonored was a game where doing the wrong thing was easy, and where doing the right thing was hard. Corvo is a man who has had his entire life ripped away from him forever. Your lover gutted before you, your child stolen way to likely never be seen again, you yourself thrown in a cell to rot for the rest of your life, and on top of all that being tortured into confessing to the murders of his own family by the very same men who orchestrated it all. You have all the motive in the world to be consumed by revenge and strike at the people who took away everything you loved without giving a second thought to the blood on your hands.
It takes restraint to not do this. To not leave a trail of bodies behind you. To only kill the men who deserved it, or to perhaps not kill at all.
In Dishonored 2, it feels wrong to go High Chaos. Not in any moral or ethical way, no, simply because Emily has no reason to do this. His throne was taken and his father is temporary frozen in marble. At the end of dishonored 1 nothing you do can bring back the empress. In Dishonored 2, if all goes well literally all you've lost will be restored. Even in her dialogue all this feels more like a nuisance than a traumatic event. Is this enough for Emily to start murdering people who she once considered her subjects? No, not in the slightest.
Playing high chaos feels hollow. I have no reason to do this. Emily wouldn't do this.
If your response is "Well duh, just play Low Chaos".
Is that really a Dishonored game then? Where the right path is the obvious and easy one?
This and other strange details just dont really make me interested in continuing. The missions arent good enough to warrant playing on that alone, and taking out the targets feels hollow. Where as in Dishonored 1 the rat plague was a very important part of the story, in Dishonored 2 the Blood flies feel like just set dressing. No one even really seems to mention them except like a couple wandering civilians.
Is there something here i am missing? Is there still something here worth seeing to continue?
I want to see the rest of this game but what its shown so far has not yet impressed me.
