Mod team message Benzo Reading Group

Hey folks,

As your friendly 'ever learning' mod, I have recently been reviewing the literature on all things benzodiazepines, rereading the Maudsley deprescribing guidelines, and getting better acquainted with all the additional medications that people ask about here.

Myself and the other mods are very passionate about helping people navigate their way through what, for some people, is a very difficult time. And, other than those of us who have a difficult time in withdrawal, there is a further subset that also have BIND.

What is clear to us is that there is a need for better access to the limited information that exists. But also that we, as individuals, need to polish our critical thinking skills to better understand medical literature, statistical inference, and to make informed decisions.

For this reason, I am launching a fortnightly literature group focusing on benzodiazepines and adjunctive medications. We will start with three papers published recently that define BIND as distinct from withdrawal. We will then move on to a chapter by chapter reading of the Maudsley deprescribing guidelines. Thereafter it will be curated readings from both current and past studies.

Don't worry if you don't understand the readings. The best way to come to understand things is by talking to peers. And I am currently back at university to become a literate medical statistician (fingers crossed!) to try to improve our understanding of BIND and benzo withdrawal, so this is my happy place.

So my proposal is: I post a reading here once a fortnight on a Wednesday, you then have two weeks to read it for the scheduled one-hour zoom benzo reading group on Tuesday 7:30 London time (2:30 EST). If you can't attend the scheduled group, that's fine. The more the merrier and it may deepen your understanding, but at the very least, you will have a tonne of fascinating readings to do :).

First reading:

Ritvo, A.D., Foster, D.E., Huff, C., Reid Finlayson, A.J., Silvernail, B. and Martin, P.R. (2023) 'Long-term consequences of benzodiazepine-induced neurological dysfunction: A survey', PLoS ONE, 18(6), e0285584. Available at: https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0285584.

First meeting: 20 October, 2026

Zoom log-in details to follow.

Yours, the Ever Learning Mod

p.s. just so I have an idea of how many people to expect please send me a DM. Cheers

Mod team message WSJ journalists seeking folks with multi-generational benzo/AD use in their families for great new book

Shalini Ramachandran and Betsy McKay (Wall Street Journal reporters who wrote the award-winning Overmedicated America series last year) are working on a book which will examine the making of America's pill-first culture for anxiety and depression. They are looking to talk to people who have experiences to share about benzodiazepines or antidepressants, including those who have had more than one generation of their families on Xanax, Prozac and the like. Part of their research will focus on drug companies, regulators and the medical system, and they are also seeking to talk to clinicians, researchers, government/regulatory officials, and current or former pharmaceutical company executives/workers.

If you'd like to share your story, please fill out this Google form, and they will reach out to contact you.

Note: I had a phone call with Shalini before agreeing to post their request and it’s clear they’re allies working on material that could bring benzos into public discussion in a significant way. Their intent is to make a systemic impact - and personally, I’m pretty excited to see what they produce in the end.

Discussion Did anyone else truly worry they had ME/CFS during withdrawal

I’ve had this for months now. Any exertion makes me pay for it the next few days. Depression, tension, anxiety, twitches, jerking, crying. You name it.

EMERGENCY Terrified

I think I gave myself a severe disability by quitting then reinstating after 4 days at .5mgs xanax. It seems mid-day i am ok but mornings and evenings are hell.

I dont even know how to describe whats happening to me. After I went out for a drive and a run I came home and lied in bed. I have no appetite. Then I got a phone call back from my works EAP that I called for support during this emergency and just the act of talking on.the phone precipitated heart palpitations and an anxiety attack. The "dpdr" as well, which im assuming is an acrobym.for depersonalization derealization.

I always was skeptical about the level of debilitation that I saw people claimed from.this drug but now i know its real. I dont think I could even drive in this state.

Im just shocked, terrified, and bewildered that I could.go from a fully functioning person to this in just 6 short days. Im not religious but pray for me. Thanks for listening

Hope Almost completely off of Ativan after over 3 years of daily use…. Finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.

I was T Boned by someone running a red light about 3 years ago and I had severe insomnia and anxiety afterwords.
I reluctantly started taking Ativan in hopes of getting some amount of relief. Within a few months I was taking 2mg a day.
I took that dosage for about a year, and at that point I decided to start tapering down. I’ve tapered very slowly as to not throw off my stability.
At the beginning of this year I was at 1mg a day, I began doing a water taper at that point and I’m now down to .125mg a day (1/8th of a 1 mg tablet).
If you’re taking these meds and feel like you’re stuck, there is hope!
I’m wondering at what dosage I can start trying discontinue completely?

Symptom Question Rumbling in my ears

I’m at 3 weeks off of a 7 year daily benzo habit of around 20 mg of Valium a day with others occasionally on top of my prescription. I’m getting this rumbling in my ears that comes and goes. Kind of sounds like thunder. Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a common withdrawal symptom?

It’s kinda like when you yawn and your ears rumble, but it comes in waves sometime.

Haven’t been able to in a long time due to chs like symptoms that aren’t quiet chs and I think it’s because my cns is maybe so damaged by benzos. Currently at 6mg Valium a night tapering 1mg every week. Any chance one day I’ll be able to smoke?

EMERGENCY Help with sleep and RLS, 7 month wave/Setback.

Hi all I’m 7 months out from stopping 4 years of 4mg clonazapam and I was doing pretty well for the most part at night and during the day, was starting to regularly get 6 - 7 of sleep a night.

Recently I had a big wave after I got sick and for the past 2 weeks I feel like my sleep and some other symptoms have been set back to week 1 withdrawal. But the lack of sleep is murder. Getting a few hours of broken light sleep one night, none the next, light broken the next and then none again, I’m exhausted, my sleep meds don’t work no matter what I try.

My restless legs are through the roof, worse then they normally are on a good day where it still takes me an hour or so to fall asleep, now I’m fighting RLS all night and can’t get tired, the nights I don’t sleep I feel unnaturally wired the next day despite not sleeping and being physically tired.

I don’t take RLS medication because they all cause augmentation one way or another, took 300mg of gabapentin for a month straight in month 4 after jumping off benzos and stopped, didn’t sleep for 5 days and ended up in the hospital.

I have no idea what to do and I’m absolutely terrified of sleep as it’s so stressful and I dread the nights, ive has so many nights where I don’t stop moving till it’s time to get up for work 9 or even 11 hours after lying down, sweating and not being able to stop moving. Doctors are essentially useless ad they don’t believe in the benzo stuff or they don’t believe in sensitivity to meds or augmentation etc. Can anyone give me some advice please?

Discussion Advice for best protocol?

I’ve been taking Xanax daily to almost daily for ~2.5-3 years at this point. Anywhere from 2mg to 6mg early on, now no more than 2mg and will skip 1-3 days (every other day) a week sometimes.

I have 30 bars left. What is the best protocol for the smoothest transition to sobriety? I’m familiar with the supplements that can generally help, just looking for best actions moving forward at this point. Thank you.

Taper Question Assistance with clon taper

Hello . I am currently trying my best to taper from clonazepam (not under medical supervision) and I have a ton of questions and was hoping there was someone out there who has been through this and could provide some assistance or guidance.

Taking .5mg / day of klonopin, started the taper at 2.5mg with some days as high as 20mg before beginning the taper. It started about 2 months ago. I’m running into difficulty cutting pills at this size.

Thanks in advance for any help

Needing Support Help understanding whats happening to me

My entire world has flipped upside down just these past 5 days. Its hard to believe its only 5 days - its felt like 5 weeks. I had no issues with benzos until this week. I tried to quit last weekend and basically went 4 days and went to the er where I got more xanax - taking about .7mg/day. Now this entire week ive been dizzy and cant sleep - and interdose withdrawal has started. Thats never happened before. And even after taking my dose tonight - I still feel bad! Has this happened to anyone before? Will I start to level out again if I keep taking .5 a day?

Also, before monday of this week .5 once at night was plenty for me. Now its hard to stick to it bc I need some in the morning afternoon and night as the withdrawals come in.

Also - I am obsessing over this. I keep telling myself to relax and watch a show or read a book but I keep triggering myself by coming back to this over and over.

I also have had extremely dark suicidal thoughts which I hadn't had before. Please if anyone can help me understand why this shift has happened and if it might abate if I take my dose regularly for a bit to try and stabilize. And also tips so this isnt all consuming my every day. The few friends I have its all I talk about with them. Thanks

Hope 7 years off benzos and feeling good

I was a daily user of multiple types of benzos for around 8 years. Took about 2 years to finally get off of them, tapering for a while and then jumping cold turkey off of I think 15mg Valium per day. It was the hardest and worst experience of my life, but this week I celebrated 7 years off these drugs. I truly can't believe it. I'm almost more time off the drugs than on! I have gotten benzos as part of surgery 2 times, but other than that, no benzos. I dont even think about them at all anymore, which is wild, because I truly could not cope with anything in life without them for a lot of my adult life. I hope all who are struggling today can hang in there and keep going. It gets better.

Hope How long does withdrawal usually take in my case?

I am a patient with mild dystonia caused by premature birth. Clonazepam helps improve my symptoms, but it comes with many side effects. I first started taking clonazepam in September 2023 and have intermittently discontinued it since then. From October to December 2025, I stopped taking clonazepam for two to three months, during which I used sodium valproate combined with levetiracetam. For that entire period of two to three months, I did not take clonazepam at all. Later, due to reduced effectiveness of this combination therapy, I resumed clonazepam on January 1, 2026, taking 0.5 mg twice daily—morning and evening—and continued this regimen until October 1 of this year. Starting October 5, I abruptly discontinued the medication, and from October 10 onward, I began experiencing severe withdrawal symptoms. Since October 11, I’ve resumed taking 0.5 mg every night at exactly 9 p.m., once daily. Today is October 17, and my condition is currently stable, though I occasionally experience insomnia. Given my history of use—three months without medication followed by nine consecutive months of daily 0.5 mg intake—how long will withdrawal typically last? I plan to maintain 0.5 mg daily from October 11 to November 12, then taper down to 0.25 mg per night for another month starting November 12, continuing this gradual reduction pattern afterward. Is this approach reasonable?

Seeking Advice/Tips Agmatine Sulfate

I’ve heard this supplement recommended recently for people dealing with benzo withdrawal. Particularly by one person here. Obviously we’re all desperate for a magical solution, and that occasionally leads me to be less intellectually rigorous than I care to admit . Wondering if anyone had input or experience, and whether or not it’s a significant contraindication that I take a very small amount of Olmesartan for high blood pressure (as a result of BIND).

EMERGENCY Saffron during benzo recovery?

Has anybody use saffron after they have stopped taking benzos? I’m suffering from extreme anxiety and depression and refused to take SSRI or antipsychotics.

I have read that it mildly work on GABA receptors.

Can anybody who has used it informed me of how it went?

Symptom Question Does The Burning Ever Ease

Physchiatrist CT'd me off 0.5mg Klonopin while I was hospitalized. I'm also trying to recover from chemotherapy as well.

Body's been relentlessly burning ever since. So far, 3 months of just constant burning.

Does it ever ease?

Needing Support Help Understanding What is Happening to me

Apologies for blowing up this thread but this week has been really bad and its continuing into today. I'm wondering if I could be having a paradoxical response to xanax? Basically I have been fine/stable for however many months before this past monday. Prior to monday, I went about 72 hrs without any xanax and felt fine. Was running and checking my pulse/blood pressure and everything was ok. Sunday night before work I took about 1/3 of my last .5 mg tablet as I had lost some this rx cycle. After dosing that sunday night, I began to feel dysphoric when I had actually felt clear and wonderful the 72 hrs I was off. So I made a mental note to not take anymore.

Well monday I had extreme dizziness which still hasn't gone away and aching chest pains so I went to the ER where I was reinstated again at .5 mgs/day but only enough for monday - friday(today) now this past week, even back on my .5 mg/day, everything has been bad. I have been constantly dizzy, extremely anxious and extremely depressed. My pulse and bp are high. It doesn't make any sense! I've never had this before. What could be going on?

Also, I have a dr appt in 50 mins with the goal of trying to get my rx filled 3 days early bc I am completely out of medicine again and don't want to risk kindling more or another cycle of this. Basically my aim is to get stable. Am I approaching this Dr appt correctly? Anyone have experience trying to get an rx filled early and a dr willing to work with u to solve this problem?

Thank you 😔😔

Taper Question I forgot to take Night dose

. Overall, I take 0.38mg of Klonopin a day split into 3 doses. I forgot to take my night dose. I woke up this morning to go cut my pills and heard medicine in my med pill container and froze.

This is the very first time I’ve done this and I’ve been tapering for close to a year.

Am I going to be okay? I took my morning meds like regular. I didn’t double dose or anything like that. I’ve been coming off a wave. Still not FULLY through but not in the acute phase of it.

I had a 4 month window before that. I’m just really scared since I forgot last nights dose.

Seeking Advice/Tips Need Advice - Went to ER monday

Ive posted here a number of times over the past few days on my quest to get stable.

Here's whats happened so far: I have been prescribed. 5mg of xanax for about 2 years with little issue (or so I know) until recently. I ran out of my medication and assumed that I would be ok if I stopped taking it over the weekend last weekend. On Monday I started having really bad tinnitus and then heart palps and dizziness so I asked if I should go to the ER and I went. I was given 1 dose of oral xanax and 4 to take home.

I think I may have induced some kindling because this week has now been incredibly bad with constantly feeling dizzy and persistent anxiety. My issue now is that I only have half of one tablet left from the ER and my follow up Dr appt isn't until monday. Initially I believed that maybe with a longer weekend I could pull off what I did last weekend and be done with the xanax but its clear that isn't going to happen. About 14 hours after my last .25mg dose I started to experience withdrawal again so I had to redose another. 25.

What should I do about the weekend? Should I try to see my doctor tomorrow and see if he can put in the refills for Saturday so I don't withdrawal over the weekend? I can't afford to play around with kindling anymore.

I don't even know how my Dr is going to respond to all of this.

Thanks,

Obrigada! 🤍

Achieving goals Tapering update

Well, continuing my taper off what was once a 24mg a day clonazepam dose.

I was able to get the diazepam liquid compound covered and started using it. After the drop from 7.5mgs to 7mgs kicked my ass, I held for over a month. I was starting to level out finally around 5 weeks but I then got whats called "BPPV" basically where these crystals in your inner ear break loose and create horrible vertigo. I was not gonna taper more while dealing what that shit show.

Anyways I finally got past that wrench thrown into my situation and have been using diazepam pills for the bulk of my dose then using the liquid compound for the .5mgs I want to take off in whichever amount of time.

I started doing .1mg reductions every 3 days or there abouts from 7mgs and have made it to 6.6mgs total daily and will go to 6.5mgs total by Saturday, which will be a 2 week time frame. Then hold and see how it pans out.

So far I've gotten a few waves of not feeling good but nothing really harsh. My tinnitus is noticeable and a couple days I was getting pretty sweaty and some higher anxiety, but I'm used to it really kicking my ass then needing a few weeks to start to recover. Im trying to keep the same pace i would aim for before getting the compound, about .5mgs in a 2-3 week time frame. I kept it to 2 weeks off the bat to see how it'd feel doing it in that short time. Its not too bad. But I think doing .5mgs in a 3 week period would probably be better. Not quite sure. But I will say it is definitely better and was the right call. I seem to be pretty sensitive to dose reductions.

My psychiatrist has never done a micro taper as liquid valium for oral use is discontinued in Canada so it needs to be compounded. Thankfully he's on board and is willing to let myself be a test.

If anyone is struggling, or having a hard time going smaller than ¼ of a 2mg tablet, see if your prescribing Dr can get a 1mg/ml liquid script sent in because with a 1ml oral syringe its pretty easy to do .1mg reductions or even smaller. Has made a big difference for me so far. Tastes like ass but when only taking at most half a ML its not too bad lol.

Anyways, I'll update as I go. But I think this will be a game changer for me. As that last .5mg reduction done all at once really hurt. I dunno why, the drop from 8mgs to 7.5mgs went pretty smoothly, 7.5 to 7 really sucked. But I've stopped trying to make sense of what to expect with benzo tapering.

Hi guys, 5 weeks into acute flare after alcohol and a quick jump at the end of my taper (6 weeks ago since any Lorazepam.)

Sometimes I’m like I can do this, other times I’m like nope nope nope it needs to be over already.

I know it’s different for all, my gp seems to think within another few weeks then I will start having windows etc

Can peeps give me some encouragement I am fighting so hard and no-one around me realises how hard this shit is to conquer
