General Discussion Does this sound like CAS at 19 months old?
Hello, I know that 19 months old is way too early to diagnosis CAS. If you have an older child that was eventually diagnosed with CAS, did their speech look like this:
My son is 19 months old and his expressive speech is throwing me for such a loop and I am incredibly worried. He has said many words about 40+ words and has even combined words on certain occasions. However, he only has about 12 to 13 (i.e ball, bear, open, all done, there, up, down, bye, pop) that I hear often (basically lost track of how many times I have heard these words). The rest of his words are pop words that I have heard maybe 2 to 6x. We have days that it seems his speech might be taking off but then we don’t quite move forward. Today he has only said (all done, bye, there, bear and maybe more). He also will sometimes stop randomly using a word for a few days. Open is one of his most used words but I have not been able to get him to produce the word all week. He babbles and does jargon. He likes to look in the mirror and says “‘mamamamamamaaa”
Many times he will fill with “bah” for example I was playing ready, set, “go” and trying to get him to fill in “go” but he usually just says “bah”. The other day he said “go” but I only got him to say it twice before he just went back to bah.
Sometimes it feels like he just doesn’t want to talk and other times it feels like he can’t get his words out. He struggles the most when he is being prompted.
I always try to pause and wait and make sure not to say “say this” or “what is this?”
His receptive language is great, social connection, eye contact all well. I have no concerns in that area.
We have EI coming for an evaluation this week but wanted so see if anyone has any insights they can share with me.
