Commonly asked questions - check here before making a question post
If you have a question about the Municipality of Anchorage someone else probably had the same or similar question in the past.
Please use the search function to look through the past question posts before making a post or comment. Many helpful users here have already given great in depth responses to many common questions. If you have a specific question after looking over the previous posts, feel free to post your question here in this thread or make a new post.
Low effort posts that clearly haven't looked through past submissions or can be easily answered by a quick internet search may be removed, a good way to avoid that would be to specify in your post that you have already looked over the sticky and searched online.
Below is a list of direct links to some commonly asked questions. However, even if you do not see your question on the list please take a moment to search before posting. When searching or when using one of the links below you can also change the sort function from top to new to see more recent posts.

Please be kind to people, the search function of reddit is far from perfect. Tourism is valuable to our city and at one point all of us were new to the city or had questions about local services and businesses.
We took a community poll on this rule a year after implementation. Here is a link to the poll and the feedback the community gave.

Honest Question
I suspect this will be deleted and/or lead to a bunch of mudslinging/name calling, but can a Trump supporter honestly explain to me the appeal?
When I talk to people in real life, no one has an actual answer beyond "I just like the guy." or "He's a great person."
From a purely scientific point of view, it makes absolutely no sense to me. I can understand, if not like, the concept of people not caring much for politics and voting Republican because of tradition or lack of understanding of how government actually works. I can understand the social engineering that says, "We need lower regulation because I'm a business owner/my boss is the owner, and I think I can benefit from this." I can even understand (and dislike greatly) the people who got REALLY excited to be mean to transgender people at his rally.
What I do not understand is how people can watch this man speak and be excited about him. So little of what he says makes sense. It's all just insults and word salad.
So if anyone who actually supports Trump and thinks he's cool wants to have a genuine conversation where I don't try to change your mind, please let me know. I am honestly just baffled that people think he's cool or sexy or whatever.

East Chester Park/New Seward
Considering house rental in above area.
I've never been to Alaska and very excited... in my Anchorage research, though limited, emphasis on crime rate and home location seem just as thematically topical as natural beauty, long winters, and utter remoteness.
Any glaring pros or cons regarding this area? Any information is appreciated.
See y'all in two weeks! 😎🤙

Does Anchorage want to go back to the old school schedule?
I am curious about the community's appetite to go back now that we are getting a new superintendent.

Midnight Sun Brewing
I was told by my local Brown Jug store that Monk's Mistress is now discontinued. Is that true? I'm no beer connoisseur, but I really enjoyed Monk's Mistress, the dark, chocolatey notes, with miminal bitterness.

Update on the APD surveillance ordinance: no vote Oct 20, it's now Nov 4, two amendments and the warrant requirement still isn't back
What passed Oct 20:
- Added the word "judicial" to the warrant exception in the sharing rule, 12–0. An agency can't write itself a warrant anymore.
- Loosened the standard for the Assembly to suspend a surveillance tool after a violation, 8–4. The admin wanted "knowingly, materially, or consistently." That's out.
- Started on a 14 day deletion limit for plate data and crime center video. Trimmed one piece of it 10–2, then ran out of time. Still pending.
What didn't happen:
The part that matters hasn't moved. The original ordinance said APD can't hand plate reader or camera data to a federal agency without a warrant from a judge. The Mayor's version, the one they're voting on, replaces that with a label: "criminal justice law enforcement purposes." The agency asking writes the label. APD takes their word for it. No judge, no public record of who got what.
Their word. From the people who shot a mother in Minneapolis and said she rammed them, shot a nurse for filming and said he had a gun, sent a man to a Salvadoran prison by "administrative error" and then told the Supreme Court it was out of their hands, and have picked up hundreds of U.S. citizens while insisting they never do, and recently raided a sitting congressperson's home looking for evidence her dad lied on his immigration application when she was 12 so they can revoke her citizenship and deport her.
That's who the Mayor's version trusts to describe its own requests honestly.
Please write your Assembly Members. If you live in East Anchorage George Martinez seems to be questioning the wisdom of leaving things so open ended, while Yarrow Silvers is a co-sponsor of the Mayor's version of rhe bill.
Meanwhile Daniel Volland and Sydney Scout repeateadly voice concerns and want tighter regulation.

We All Know This Guy Is AI Right?
I keep seeing posts from The Alaska Daily, and while I know the guy is a real person, I'm about 99% convinced he's using HeyGen to create AI-generated videos of himself, complete with his likeness and voice.
Anyone else getting that vibe? lol
Everyone in the Facebook comments seems blissfully unaware that they might be watching an AI avatar.

A driver's license shouldn't be a barrier to existing in a major city...
I feel like I need to say something about this in a public forum at this point, especially with all the jobs I've seen hanging open for a year or more after I applied to them, fully qualified and a perfect match in every way except for at the very end of the interview... When I was informed the position was only open to someone with their own vehicle, even though travel had nothing to do with the job.
I'm a senior professional with multiple college degrees... Who became unable to drive due to a health condition which ONLY impacts that as far as job duties go. To be honest, I never had a license to begin with because I wasn't born into a privileged enough environment to get the necessary help to do it, and then wasn't privileged enough to have the time, money, etc. to do the schooling by myself. And I never apply to anything that would ever require travel while on the job, even though I have been the company gopher in other larger cities using Uber before without any complaints.
Because of this situation, I'm about to die. At 42yo, having never even started the senior level of my career that I'm clearly ready to take on. Unable to even get an entry level job even though employers love my resume and interviews... All because once they find out I don't drive, that automatically knocks me out of the running, even when it was clear that I was first in line from the start. And these positions often STAY open after I'm rejected... Often for 6 months to a year or more. I know full and well that I'm a commodity up here, and I've heard plenty of employers complain that they can't find anyone like me up here.
Well, here I am. Been here for 3 years and can't find work, not from lack of trying or lack of competency, but because for some reason the most important requirement for ANY job up here is a driver's license and your own vehicle. Not reliable transportation... It must be your own transportation, even though the employer doesn't require you driving for work and doesn't do any form of gas mileage compensation.
At a time when that's very well becoming a luxury that only the privileged who make way more than those jobs pay can afford to begin with.
I don't know what I expect this post to do, if anything at all. I just know I at least need to try to speak up after the depressing morning I had with an amazing interview that was ended with "oh by the way... You need a license" and then seeing more tents and homeless without warm winter clothing around town than I've ever seen before. I can't help but wonder what did I do to deserve any of this? I've worked so hard to do better that I partially disabled myself in the process of doing it and also accidentally ended up alienating myself further from everyone because now not only can they not relate to my experiences, but also can't relate to the level of self sacrifice and resilience that I've pumped into just trying to catch up with them after being raised in a doomsday cult which believed there was no point in me driving, being independent, having an education, a job, or having any hope for living/surviving at all because the world was supposed to end at any moment.

Anchorage Municipal Budget-anyone have any thoughts?
Hi everyone, as you probably have heard it's now budget season, and things aren't looking great for the city.
One thing that always surprises me is how much we spend on roads, but then how little value we get out of those costs. The Municipal roads department somehow always seems to build bigger, more expensive roads that actually increase costs and encourage people to drive faster while also going over budget and taking way longer than expected. (I think there are some projects in this year's project down around Abbott Loop that they have been trying to build since 2009, spent millions of dollars on so far, yet still haven't started). Maybe some opportunities there to cut some fat! Or at least bring a little bit of accountability.

VEHICLE INVOLVED IN A HIT-AND-RUN ON A HOME - East Side Airport Heights Area APD Case #26-27419

We’re hoping someone in this community might recognize this truck or have information that could help identify the license plate or the person responsible.
Please share this post. Even a small detail could make a difference. If you have any information, please send me a private message so we can pass it along to the appropriate authorities.

JKT?
I want peoples reasons on why they are voting for him. He seems pro tax, inexperienced, and kind of a pushover. I do like that he wants to forward fund education. I don’t typically vote Republican, but I’m leaning towards Bronson after watching the debate for the state, as he seems like someone who could actually work both sides of the aisle.
PS I’m a big hell no for Bernadette.
