Picks Of The Week (by u/lefuniname)

1. OVERTONE, MÆDM, Purple Velvet Curtains - Dungeon [Elevate Records]

Recommended if you like: Annix, Fade Black, Duskee

The music industry is constantly in flux. Be it change in technology, the never-ending cycle of a genre being in and out of fashion, or the established guard inspiring young artists to pursue this wild ride as well - and eventually being usurped by them. Luckily, due to all of the above factors acting in our scene's favour right now, we have been seeing a near-constant stream of new names pop out of the woodworks lately, with some having started building beats at ages when little old me was still a mere Guild Wars addict. Today, we've got two of those on our hands, working together with an artist I've been absolutely loving the past few years. Strap in, it's artist background time!

1.1. OVERTONE

First up, we've got Jasper James Leeves, nowadays known as OVERTONE. At only 18 years of age, his output is already ridiculous at the very least, and then you learn he's been going at it since 2018. He was twelve! Or was he ten? His current bio conflicts with the titles of some of his oldest tunes on that. Point is, he was insanely young. Always thoroughly supported by his Middle Aged Dad Ben, the British lad started sharing his electronic creations with the world under his initialisms JJL, with truly perfect track titles like 'I Look Like A Mouldy Carrot', remix competition entries for MusicbyLUKAS and Elevven & JES, and year-annotated anthems for both Ibiza and... Hamburg? Unexpected, but I do love the Hansestadt!

As we get into the 2020s, Jasper started participating in more and more contests, from the Cymatics Beat Contest to remix competitions like Disciple's BRCOAT2, Don Diablo's Forever contest, and Moonboy's one for 'Have Faith In Me'. Not only did these see Jasper collaborate with fellow underrated artists like Thorne, Toxic Wraith, and Affe, his and Mr. Monkey's drum & bass rework of 'Sleepwalking' actually won in the aforementioned Disciple competition, leading to an official release on the legendary imprint!

His sound now stretching from future house to UKG to the occasional drum & bass, Jasper kept this trajectory going, with releases on NCS and its sister label Arcade, Chapter Eight, and Athos, and collaborations with Siik, MALARKEY, and iFeature sprinkled in. In 2024, he even supported Fatboy Slim! In the past year or so, however, the genre tides have been slowly but ever-so-surely shifting towards the faster tempos, with his various collaborative works with MANIA and MÆDM on Shogun off-shoot Elevate and his contribution to CRUCAST's New Era compilation all sitting firmly in the DnBangers camp.

After about 8 years, Jasper decided to retire the old alias earlier this year, rebranding himself as OVERTONE. While at the moment still limited to drum & bass (much to my delight!), his output under the name has been as varied as ever, from the lovely liquid roller 'Time' with Sofia Tea for Shogun's Point Of Origin compilation to the new-school smasher 'Alone' to the absurdly heavy - wait a minute, we're not talking about the new one yet! There's two more names to explore first.

1.2. MÆDM

The second, on a closer look surprisingly young part of the equation comes from down in The Netherlands, and goes by the name of MÆDM. Similar to his collab partner today, Gray Sebastiaan Hoek, son of Marga's, has been going at it since 2018, which would put him at about 11 years of age. Or 12. Once again, song descriptions and Instagram captions couldn't quite agree on one timeline - he was young, okay? As Sebastian Gray, his explorations in bouncy electro, house, and EDM resulted in Haarlem's legendary Conservatory accepting him into their personalised pre-education programme, followed by Amsterdam's own conversatory and PACT+, boosting his already promising career into the stratosphere in the long run.

For actual forward momentum on the release side of things, we kinda have to skip a little ahead into the early 2020s though. After a brief collab with Steven Hades and Théo Lanchantin in 2021, the now 15-year-old enrolled in the Herman Brood Academy in Utrecht (my beloved), kicking off a roll of releases that, to be honest, hasn't really slowed down yet. Now, in 2022, rebranded as MÆDM, he went on a spree of collaborations with the likes of DENRO, UKRUX, Dansen, JARTANOX, Low Blow, Bright Hinze, Mike Riser, and a certain Purple Velvet Curtains, giving labels like Storm Music, Chill Planet, and HEXHIBITION (I'm not doing the weird letters) a taste of his left hoek. As you can perhaps tell from the label names, he was stylistically stretching himself all over the place, and his 2024 explorations into House, Speed Garage, and the vibes that the 3000 label family is into continued to prove that. And then there was his bootleg of FE!N.

I'm not just mentioning it because Jasper also took that viral tune for a spin, I'm highlighting it because that's when I first stumbled upon the Dutchie - because he turned it into a filthy, froggy drum & bass chune! That bootleg, and his 'PEDRO DUB' follow-up, made me an instant fan, and for that I was swiftly rewarded with a 2025 full of remixes for Zapya, Rhiannon Roze, and Biometrix, slick originals, a crossover with a certain JJL, and a LASERBEAM rework, all in the 170s and distributed via the likes of NCS, Jungle Cakes, High Tea, and Elevate. Now done with his studies, he keeps the party going with more and more goodness on the likes of Monstercat and Exert, while (co-)producing for other artists like Alie, The Partysquad, Dansen, and Neo Villis. Dude has been MÆD busy!

Just one more puzzle piece to fill until we can talk about the tune of the day - let's talk PVC!

1.3. Purple Velvet Curtains

Not polyvinyl chloride, no. We're of course talking about Ryan Daniel Redican, the bright Brightonian MC that's blessing this track with one of his signature vocal performances! While he has become a staple in our scene as of late, there is actually so much more to discover in his discography!

Way back in 2014, Ryan started sharing his own productions with the world, with Bassline banger 'She Can Get It / You Know My Man' on Q Recordings being his debut under the Purple Velvet Curtains banner. Love me an alias that doubles as a secure passphrase. Via Bear Fresh, Formula Four40, and _Fly Boy, he kept exploring the sounds of the UK underground, and by 2017, his productions started appearing on the likes of Crucast and Night Bass. One more important thing happened that year though. Inspired by the legend that is P Money, which he first met and blurrily took a picture with at a sweaty 16+ rave in 2010, he played around with this MCing thing, with his AC Slater collaboration 'Misfits' being the first of many tracks featuring his own vocals. Jumping between Brighton and Ibifa, Ryan would go on to deliver one saucy tune after another, expanding his label palette to include Play Me Too, Circus, Southpoint, and, well, Saucy, while working together with Barely Royal, Bushbaby, Duke Sky, and more. Plus, another AC Slater vocal link-up!

As the pandemic rolled in, things became a little quieter around the project, but Ryan was not slowing down. In 2020, he unveiled a new side project of his: Rainy Dancer! A place for him to play around with soul, disco, lo-fi, and garage, this alias would act as a counterweight to the bassy music you'd come to expect from him by then - at least until about 2022, when the last Rainy Dancer release came out. On the PVC side of things, however, things were going swimmingly. You'd start seeing his productions appear on places like Spinnin, Skink, NUCRU, YosH, and The Archives, while the vocalist side began to take over more and more. By working together with the likes of MPH, Aaron Jackson, MAEDM, and many more, Ryan became a prominent voice for all sorts of genres, and once his 2023 collab with Hoax on Hospital rolled around, even drum & bass wasn't safe from him anymore.

In no time at all, Ryan has since then not only become a prominent voice for all things Hospital Records and, by extension, Soulvent, he is also regularly collaborating with basically all of the most exciting names we've got right now: hayve, Laminar, RageMode, Bloom, Screamarts, Hugh Hardie, Protostar, SMG, Tantron, Tian, Ambion, SUUNE, bogdvn, Gabrielle Bongo - and that's still just an excerpt of the full list! I'm not even going to attempt to list all the labels he has appeared on through that, just know that it's a long, long list of names.

Now, Ryan is adding two more names, and one new label to the ever-expanding rolodex - so let's finally check that tune out now!

1.4. Dungeon

Even though it's released via Elevate Records, Shogun's sister label for the sometimes heavier and/or Dancefloor-oriented sounds, one might not expect the abundance of filth Dungeon shovels into our ears on here, but that's kind of the fun with the artists involved. One day you'll get something techy and melodic, the other something liquid or jungle, then suddenly you're hit with something that will flatten anyone in its way - and all of it is amazing!

Back to the track at hand though. We open to an outright oppressive atmosphere of police sirens, rhythmic vocal chops, and intimidating wobbles bouncing in the distance, giving the deeply rumbling voice of Purple Velvet Curtains plenty of space to warn us of the danger lurking below, before being launched straight into abyss. With a back and forth between otherworldly growls of monumental proportions rattling us to our core and flurries of wide, weighty stabs somehow pumping our battered organs back to life, the duo manages to cause all sorts of physical reactions in us, before man like PVC pipes back up, in an effort to warn us of further danger ahead. However, his words of repeated wisdom are in vain, as we stumble right into the devastation again, for an even filthier bass attack.

1.5. Conclusion

Stupendously heavy, supremely steppy, simply amazing. The kids are more than just alright.
