Announcement Subreddit Update: Low-Effort, Computer-Generated Content, and Politics

Hello everyone, we’ve got a new set of rule changes that we're hoping will lead to clearer and fairer moderation on this subreddit.

Low-Effort Content

Rule 9 (Comment-Requesting Posts) will be consolidated into this rule.

A post may be considered low-effort if it falls into the following categories:

  • Low creative, humorous, analytical, or informational value
    • Generic screenshot of something mundane with an unrelated title
    • “Kochi Oma” with an image of Kokichi.
  • Posts with low potential to generate interesting discussion
    • “I love Miu!” with nothing else
    • “Give me a character and I’ll give them a 1-10 rating”
  • Extremely generic, easily spammable prompts
    • “What is he looking at?” (With an image)
    • “How would these two interact?”
    • “Say something nice about Chihiro”

If that last point seems vague, a general rule of thumb would be “Is the post generic enough that you can swap out the image/character with any other image/character, and spam it?”

Posts that fall into these categories may be removed under this rule.

Mod discretion will be used when necessary.

Question: Why has this rule changed?

One of the general “guidelines” that the modteam has historically tried to follow is that all rules must be 100% objective, with no room for interpretation. There must be no grey areas in the rules; if something caused a foreseeable edge case, ambiguity, or potential mistake, the other mods would immediately veto the idea on the grounds that it was impossible to enforce.

The original intent for this style of modding was for people to be able to read the rules and know with 100% certainty what is/isn’t allowed, and for the mods to know with certainty what should/shouldn’t be removed. At the start, it accomplished this, but over time, it started doing the opposite with rules becoming extremely hyperspecific with really awkward criteria to a point where it was impossible to memorize. In addition, the rule would end up being changed every 2-3 months to cover loopholes that ended up being abused.

Now, with most of the older mods cycling through with newer mods taking their place, we’re more willing to add in some level of subjectivity if it makes rules easier to understand.

We’ve decided that something as inherently subjective as Low-Effort is impossible to define with 100% objectivity while still making sense. Our previous attempts were either too lax and allowed low-effort slopposts to leak through, or too strict with something that has tons of effort removed because it happened to fall under some weird, seemingly harmless criteria.

We’re hoping that adding some level of subjectivity to the rule will make more sense and cause less problems.

Computer-Generated Content

Content that is directly generated by computers is not allowed on r/danganronpa. This includes:

  • AI-generated images
  • Screenshots of chatbot responses
  • Randomizers such as Hunger Games Simulator and Wheel Decides their Fate

Question: Why has this rule changed?

The rule has not changed, it’s simply being separated into its own rule. The actual application of the rule is the same.

The reason behind separating this into its own rule is for clarification purposes. With Low-Effort Content being more subjective, we just want to make it clearer if a post is removed because we thought it was a normal low effort post, versus a post being removed because we believe some element of it was AI-generated.

Politics

This rule will replace our “Banned Topics” rule.

Do not post about real-world politics that are unrelated to Danganronpa.

Political topics that are directly related to Danganronpa are allowed. For example, the following topics would be allowed on r/Danganronpa:

  • Tariffs increase the price of 2x2 physical copies
  • Discussion on a political event in the canon Danganronpa story
  • Kodaka runs for government

Posts that are not inherently political but are clearly intended to reference a certain political event (such as a post about a sniper on a roof the day after an assassination) will also be removed.

Mod discretion will be used to determine what is considered “political” if necessary.

Question: Why has this rule changed?

As mentioned before, the older iteration of the modteam has historically been against any type of subjectivity or ambiguity. A blanket politics ban was originally deemed “too subjective”, which is why the Banned Topics was a bullet point list of topics that we do not allow.

With the current state of politics in the world, and us willing to add more mod discretion level rules, we’ve decided that it’s impossible to keep updating a bullet-point list, and replacing it with a general Politics ban would be the healthiest thing for the subreddit.

Tierlists

We polled the subreddit last time and the majority of respondents supported our current implementation of the tier list rule.

We will be keeping the 5-sentence mandatory explanation for “Favorite X” tier lists/subjective ranking posts.

Please leave any questions or concerns in the comments.

I can't wait to get political once Kodaka runs for evil supreme leader of the world, lmao.

Good changes! Always good to see rules be made more clear and easier to follow, makes it easier for me and I'm sure a lot of other people :)

Also glad to see the computer generated content stuff as its own rule, love to see it.

I do have a question about computer generated content, actually. And I know people can get passionate about this topic, so just to be clear, I’m only asking for the purpose of clarification. An ambiguity struck me while I was reading the post.

There is an increasing rise in Tiktoks and Youtube videos that are clearly written, directed, and edited by humans but incorporate AI voices or even use AI generated images at some point. I’m not talking about content farms that generate the entire video from top to bottom (I’m not really sure why anybody would want to post that sort of thing here anyway), but take the Youtube channel “Seals are Good” for example. Those Danganronpa meme parodies clearly use AI, but they are not wholly AI creations. So at what point is something considered “directly generated by a computer?” Is the content banned if any part of it is generated by a computer? Or is it only banned if pretty much all of it is generated by a computer?

I’m not trying to be pedantic, and I don’t have any agendas. But I thought it was worth clarifying.

This hasn't been discussed but I think we'll probably judge these on a case-by-case basis.

I sometimes use ai to crop out the hair of a character sprite to use in a meme I am editing instead of taking too long to do it myself.

Me too detection_kirgiri That is actually a great point to bring up. There is a massive difference between high-effort meme parodies like Seals are Good and complete AI content farms that just spam low-effort videos. It's tough because AI is becoming a common editing tool, but forcing the mods to measure the exact percentage of human effort in every single post sounds like a nightmare for them. Case-by-case is probably the only realistic way to handle it for now.

If "wheel decides their fate" isn't the entire post -- like if someone made a fangan plot promoted by a randomized order -- would that be okay? I don't plan to do this but I have done it for other fandoms (pre-AI-boom, no less).

I'm pretty sure this will be fine? The rule is mostly to stop people from just posting a low-effort list/screenshot and dipping.

2

u/hyperjengirl 8d ago

Yeah that's what I thought but wanted to be sure.

I don't see how there's really a difference between 'wheel decides their fate post' vs 'so anyway my fan game idea: wheel decides their fate post'

The level of elaboration

3

u/-Some_weirdGuy- 8d ago

Isn't the whole point of those randomisers to then 'explain' the results with a little scenario?

Are people really just posting a screengrab of the rolls with nothing else, is that even fun for the one doing the rolls?

sounds about as 'fun' as 'playing monopoly' where instead of using any rules you just move your piece around the board one square at a time and end once you get back to go.

Yes.

Unfortunately, yes.

I am glad about the tierlist rule. I like seeing why they think the way they do. Makes the tierlists more fun.

Talks of politics should be allowed as long as it relates to Danganronpa

As in like, for example, you were to make a political commentary or analysis of something in the series

15

u/ArcticFox19 Guitar Ibuki 8d ago

Yeah, we explicitly allow politics that directly relates to the series.

Things that wouldn't be allowed is an art post of, say, one of the DR characters shooting a real-life assassination victim.

There is precedent for this, btw.

Discussion on a political event in the canon Danganronpa story

thank goodness we can still talk about how the united nations nearly slaughtered a small country with a fake virus outbreak

I'm going to assume it's fine, but just in case:

Are Wheel Decides allowed if there's effort put into them? Like if the results are drawn or edited or made into a comic with the Danganronpa Comic Studio?

About rules being applied subjectively and objectively, I want to talk about rule 1, specificly about the part that all images must have something related to Danganronpa and the post.

Last month I posted this post that had enough text, can generate meaningful discussion and people were interacting with it. But it got deleted because the image used wasn't related to Danganronpa. And I had seen a number of posts that survive that. And I just don't get it, the image (in this senario) is supposed to represent a reaction related with the feeling of the post. If I edited Makoto's hair into the image or didn't use an image at all, would it have made the post more relevant to Danganronpa? It's the exact same post and talking points. Again, it's just a meme reaction, it's fairly used even in this sub. (My objection is both to my deleted post, and that the rule is covering more than it would make it useful).

I don’t get the self hating shit on this sub. It’s so annoying. We literally all like the game here, and yes, SOME of us enjoy reading quite a lot.

800 words is too much to read? yet presumably you've finished the entire series, right?
